Had an inspired hake dish, with saffron mash, mussel broth and samphire. Beautifully fresh with great intensity of flavour. The chef uses quality ingredients and really knows how to get the best out of them. It was difficult to make a choice as the whole menu ( which looks like it changes with regularity) sounded appetising The Rat is an... More

Visited on a cold, windy day for lunch with hubby and well behaved smallish dog ( after 5 hour drive). Despite bar area and most of restaurant being empty, was told dogs not allowed inside, only in garden. Would be nice if this was clearer on website which makes a big deal of warm welcome. Your loss as lunch and... More

I'll be honest I like my beer and here was a lovely selection of local ales. Match this with a small menu (the type I prefer as a better chance everything is fresh) all you then need is well cooked tasty food enjoyed in a nice atmosphere and served with a smile. The Rat delivers all of this so take... More

If your travelling across the A69 well worth turning off at the Hexham roundabout and seeking out The Rat at Anick, food served every evening except Sun. Menu is updated regularly on blackboard (about 8 meat and fish choices didn't look to be a huge amount for vegetarians). I had Hake with saffron mash, samphire and a mussel broth it... More

Our favourite local place for special occasions - the rib of beef is fabulous, and there's always a good range of locally sourced options on the menu. Cosy, low ceilinged pub, with a log fire in winter. Not cheap, but always worth it.

As our friends and I belong to a club called The RATs we decided it would be fun to visit this place as we were staying nearby. It is not the easiest place to find and not the easiest of car parks to get in and out of on a motorbike. However it is in a lovely setting and has... More

Having had a good weekday lunch we decided to try their Sunday lunch.Everything was good except the beef, which was tough.I said to my wife if I complain is their anything they can do .She replied "it would have made a lovely casserole but it is not suitable for roasting." So I chomped my way through the meat but my... More

On a sunny Saturday evening, the Rat Inn was busy with people enjoying the garden and eating both inside and outside. The staff are friendly and welcoming and the menu was very interesting. The food was beautifully cooked and plentiful.

I decided to try The Rat - not having visited for quite some while and was not dissapointed. The inn is an out-of-the-way venue close by the A69 road north of Hexham. It is an historic inn building with a nicely decorated restaurant interior. The grounds are ideal for drinks on a summer evening. The staff were attentive, friendly and... More

Great food, good portions, good choice of meat and non meat dishes. Nice selection of starters, mains and desserts. Friendly local staff, ambience is friendly and unpretentious and the wine and beers are good. Definitely worth a trip if you are in the area. Gets very busy so worth a call to book a table. I recommend the sea trout... More
