About
Ponchatoulas was founded in February 1996, by original owner Johnny Gaudet, who then partnered with Chris Garriga in 2004. With a passion for good food and fun, Gaudet opened the restaurant on the bustling Park Avenue in downtown Ruston. The building housed a fire station in the early 1900's, complete with the big red fire truck and even horse-drawn carriages lining the downtown streets. Some years later, the location became a landmark for one of history's music legends, Elvis Presley. Presley recorded in an upstairs studio of the then KRUS radio station. It wasn't until the late 1980's that the building was converted to a restaurant, not much different from the current site. The full-service restaurant offers patrons a wide variety menu that includes appetizers of seafood gumbo, fried mushrooms and boudin balls, as well as from the fryer servings of fried crawfish tails, shrimp, oyster and catfish.

Some work friends and I ate at Ponchatoulas this week and it was average. I was expecting it to be really good since it is highly rated in the area. I ordered the fried shrimp and every shrimp had that chlorine / chemical taste. I really do not like shrimp that have this taste and was extremely surprised to have shrimp at this restaurant with it. I really did like the boudin balls and would definitely recommend those. The fried pickles were average and so are the fries. It's an okay restaurant and has a good feel, but I don't think I will return. I may have just been unlucky and got some bad shrimp, but I would figure the quality control would have been better. Service was very good and our waitress was very attentive.

Billy, our team at Ponchatoulas is disappointed to hear the quality of your food was not up to par. This is definitely out of the norm considering we only use Gulf Shrimp. We hope you decide to come back in order to get the true experience of dining with us and look forward to serving you.

We love this place and the food is always good... however, I am a roast beef po-boy lover and I was so disappointed with this item. I asked for the gravy on the side, so I expected some sliced Roas Beef on this sandwich.
What I got was a LOT of mushy overcooked roast beef that had no texture whatsoever. It was the texture of squash. The roast was like a minced meat soggy type of mushy, messy mess. NO sense putting gravy on it, the gravy had meat in it so they would have fared better by putting the gravy on the poboy rather than the mushy stuff. It was aweful. I paid 12.00 for it, and barely ate one half. I boxed it up for our dog. No kidding, this is not a traditional roast beef sandwich. If you've ever had a sloppy joe, it had more meat texture than this thing. Too bad because their other food and poboys are great.

First time in Ruston and Ponchatoulas was always the fist mentioned when asking for dining recommendations. Got stuck in the middle between lunch and dinner around 2:30 and our party was starved. Ordered the Meat Pie Basket as an appetizer. Came with a ranch dressing for dipping and atop a mound of fries. Ate the small pies stuffed with beef and came five to an order. Very good. Then ordered a combo meal of fried crawfish tails and étouffée. Came hot loaded with at least 30 crawfish tails and a half a plate of étouffée. Delicious, but almost too much food. Wanted to try the white chocolate bread pudding, but no room (should have got an order to go for later). Service was good and prices very reasonable, compared to the amount of food and quality.

We have been to Ponchatoulas's a number of times over the years and considered the restaurant to be pretty good but not great. Tonight we were disappointed.
We started with fried mushrooms and these were very good. The servers were attentive and our power boys were delivered quickly. Here's where things fell apart:
My husband enjoyed his oyster po boy but my order gave problems I had ordered the roast beef sandwich on sourdough bread and was disappointed to find the whole sandwich was completely cold. (This is supposed to be hot, including the debris gravy. )
Nope. It was cold, so I asked a server to take it back to the kitchen so it could be warmed up. This makes a grand total of three times I have ever sent anything back to the kitchen.
After about five minutes or so, the sandwich was returned, STILL absolutely cold! Not edible.
Yes, the cost of the sandwich was taken from the bill and the server apologized for the problem. She offered to bring something else but my husband was nearly through with his meal so I declined.
My point is this--a manager should have been alert to the problem and taken care of it. I never saw a manager.
I am not mad, just disappointed. Not planning to return here either.

Boudin egg rolls and bread pudding were good. Fried shrimp had a funny taste and pasta was very bland. Had 6 people in our family and charged 20% tip, plus another 3% for paying with a card. Tip would have been worth it if service was good but our drinks were never refilled and waitress was rude when asked for a refill.

My hubby and I went here for lunch before we headed out of town. I wish we had eaten here earlier during our trip! I had the catfish and file gumbo; hubby had fried shrimp and crawfish etoufee over rice. Everything was cooked exceptionally well and so fresh! We had margaritas on the rocks and really enjoyed ourselves. Our waitress was very attentive and made sure we were well taken care of. If I am in this area again, I will definitely be back!

The best part of our dinner here was the reasonably priced 22oz Holy Roller beer for $7.00 and the large bowl of File Gumbo for $9.50. Otherwise, we thought the food was average at best. The Shrimp Po Boy was as basic as they come; limited flavor. Same for the Pasta Salad; basic and bland. The vegetables that came with the Grilled Shrimp With Vegetables were actually tasty. All-in-all, we thought the food was average at best; good for those not looking for the familiar. We haven't been in a restaurant in a long time that charged a fee to pay by credit card - so there is that.

Great place to eat in Ruston if you like Cajun food. Enjoy the shrimp, oysters, crawfish, and catfish to name just a few of the items available. My personal favorite is probably the stuffed catfish.

We chose this establishment based on reviews which were mostly positive, but they must have changed cooks. My wife and I ordered the sample platter with different entrees. She had the fried shrimp (6 avg size) & crawfish e’toufee (cold, greasy, 3 very sm crawfish). I had fried crawfish ((8 small) & file gumbo (cold, greasy, Tasteless ). Very overpriced, tasteless, greasy food which we could not even finish. Waitress asked about not finishing and said she would tell the cook. Wasted 50 dollars and went back to our travel trailer for sandwiches.

I don't get the hype on it. It's below average seafood for a price higher than New Orleans good quality seafood. People in Ruston just think bland food and improperly cooked cajun food is delicious. Go further down south and people wouldn't like it. In fact a lot of people I know from further south that did try it didn't like it. They just don't leave reviews on trip advisor. Not many people do. So that's why it's "#1 in Ruston"

The food was delicious. The fried shrimp and crawfish was delish. The fried oysters were chewy! The etouffee was just ok. It didn’t taste like etouffee nor did it look like etouffee. Very bland. Anywhoo maybe we’ll eat here again if in town. On the fence!!

Super good bayou grub! Bar atmosphere, which always means good food to me. We had good service, despite the fact they were super busy. My daughter ordered the chicken finger platter. We had fried green tomatoes with the remoulade. They weee very good but the breading was pretty spicy and seemed thicker than the tomato. I ordered the catfish and shrimp platter. It was so filling I couldn’t eat but about two fries. Both meals came with a salad, and we ordered Caesar. I ordered a crab cake on the side. I love them and can’t get them at home. I’d highly recommend this place. There’s a bar next door and you could hear live music bellowing out of it. Ponchatoula’s is located right downtown Ruston and is within walking distance to shops and downtown live music.

I would advise against eating here. The food quality in the past was great but not today. Tonight we encountered cold French fries with our entrees and "luke warm" crawfish etouffee with cold rice. The server stated that we were not the only ones complaining of the food temperature this evening. The crawfish etouffee was replaced by the server/manager with chicken and sausage jambalaya upon her recommendation. While eating the jambalaya a dark black hair, that did not belong to us, was found in it. I advised the server/manager we were done. I asked for the ticket, paid and left. We will not eat here anymore.

We like this spot. Every time we come to town, we eat here one of those days. The food is good and tasty for area. We stopped in today and the fries were old and you could tell because everything was freshly fried. It seemed to be an issue with us saying the fries weren’t fresh. I could hear the guy in the kitchen and we were sitting at the top!! Definitely didn’t want to send them back but they were hard and cold.

We absolutely love this restaurant. Last evening was our first visit. We ordered the Fried Pickles as an appetizer. Best ever. My entree was the Stuffed Catfish. OMG! It exceeded my expectations and was just so delicious. Filets were fried to perfection, with crawfish stuffing nestled between the two, topped with yummy Crawfish Etoufee! Hubs had the shrimp platter with 12 perfectly fried jumbo shrimp. We both had onion rings & hush puppies. The meal also came with a salad which was good as well. Our waitress was knowledgeable and attentive. Fantastic meal, great service. Highly recommended!
