The food and service at Mayan Cafe are spectacular. I have tried to describe my meal to friends, and I really don't know how. It was somewhat similar to Mexican, but with different wonderful spices and lots of citrusy flavors. We ordered and shared an...entree, a salad and two sides, and all were marvelous. Everything we ordered seemed healthy and fresh. I felt that my unvaccinated family member was safe as possible there. We will absolutely be back. This was one of the best meals either of us has ever had.More

We only stopped in because of the good trip advisor reviews. The food was excellent, but the ambiance was just okay as the inside of the restaurant is still closed because of covid. We went back to the car to get jackets and blankets and...sat outside in the alley. We had a large heater and it was fine, but I just wasn't prepared to sit outside and all you could smell was the propane. However, the service was great. I think we had a waitress in training so the two of them took good care of us - both very friendly. My spouse and I both had the signature pork dish and our teenager daughters both had the chicken burrito. The empanadas and shrimp ceviche were excellent appetizers. It was a lot of food too! The area of town is a little eclectic and artisy, but sitting in the alley did give me a little uneasy feeling. But in the end, everything was great!More

Small restaurant, great service (thank you, Alex!), and delicious food. My husband and I are vegetarians and we found great options. The blood orange margarita was yummy as were our entrees and guacamole. The chocolate dessert was just ok.

We did lunch, which was quite good and reasonably priced. My son very much enjoyed his veggie burrito, and my puppozoles (misspelled) were good if not marvelous. Service was a bit lackluster given that they weren’t busy.More

I'd say this restaurant was just okay. My biggest issue was the value for the money. The food was average, but the presentation was nice. I just felt like I expected more for the price. The highlights were certainly the setting (nice intimate restaurant) and...the drinks. I'd recommend the blood orange margarita for sure. The entrees were average in taste so I'm not sure we'll be back.More

Our second visit to Louisville and our second visit to the Mayan Café. Does that make us regulars because we sure would be if we lived here! We opened by sharing an awesome appetizer of roasted brussel sprouts, red pepper jelly, and poached egg, then...splitting a slow roasted pork with malanga cake as a side. A $33 bottle of Spanish Grenache, room for bread pudding and pistachio ice cream desert and barely spent $100 including tip. Thanks to Alyson for great service, especially giving our sharing behavior. See you next time!More

We had a friend visiting from Mexico (Oaxaca) and we wanted her to try some of our favorite Latino restaurants. My husband and I had the salbutes, with which she was unfamiliar. She was wondering if they were like sopes, but we weren’t sure if...it is the same comparison. But it doesn’t matter because We love eating salbutes!! She had one of the specials for the day, blue tortilla with lamb and topped with fried pumpkin slivers. She was amazed by it! Thanks for representing Mexico in Louisville!More

Thanks so much for your support, Ruth! And yes, your friend is right they are similar to sopes! The salbutes are found most in the Yucatan, where are chef is from, but sopes are the most similar item to other regional Mexican cuisine. We are...More

I came here with a large group and we were all in a really good mood, ready to eat and drink. The cafe is small, so make sure you call ahead for reservations or to make sure there are available tables. The space is very...cozy with a real farm-to-table, hometown, family feel. It is great for relaxing business dinner, romantic date, but, honestly, not with kids. They have a great beer selection with crafts and domestics, along with a good wine list, and full bar--so everyone will be happy. For starters, I ordered the Empanadas ($9), three chorizo, black beans, Chihuahua cheese, sour cream, and chunky tomato-habanero sauce pockets of love. I could've eaten many, many more--they were perfectly cooked--crispy on the outside and soft and flavorful on the inside. I also ordered the Scallop Ceviche ($13), made up of wild-caught scallops, guajillo vinaigrette, avocado, and pineapple-pico de gallo. Man, this was good, light, and refreshing to eat and, in my opinion, created a good contrasting balance with the fried empanadas. For my entree, I ordered the popular, Cochinita Pibil ($23), a slow-roasted pork roast, with achiote sauce, pickled onions, tok-sel lima beans, and pim tortilla, filled with beans and cheese. It was fantastic--full of flavor and great variations of flavor in every bite with the fresh, delicate ingredients. I was so happy with my choice--it'll be hard not to order it again and try something else. I loved this little place creating unique entrees that just put a smile on your face when you look at it land in front of you and when you shove it in your mouth. Looking forward to coming back!More

This was our favorite restaurant while visiting Louisville. The menu caters to those who want to try something new and different or stick with something more traditional. The salmon, pork, and empanadas were all delicious. Make a reservation and come hungry and open minded!
