Delicious BBQ in a quaint, very casual hot spot frequented by locals. The pulled pork sandwich & the ribs were wonderful. The green beans, collard greens, baked beans & beer cheese grits were yummy. The potato salad was a little bland. Highly recommend a visit...to the Red State BBQ.More
Wow!! You should not hesitate at all to come here. Any of the bad reviewers must have been having a super bad day or were angry someone wrote something on the bathroom wall they didn’t like (or both). I had the beer cheese brisket sandwich...on a delicious pretzel bun with a side of greens. My husband had the pulled pork sandwich with slaw and my 2 year old son had pulled chicken plate with fries. We taste the Memphis, Texas and Kentucky bbq. All were delicious but KY was my favorite (hubby loved the Memphis). We all shared the peach cobbler with bourbon salted caramel ice cream. It was one of the best meals I’ve had in awhile. We hope to stop here on our way back from vacation.
Also, everyone was so friendly, including the customers. This place is an absolute gem!!More
We went to this place based on so many excellent reviews. First impression as we approached was strange. Looks like an older house with 2-3 cars parked out front. Only as we went just past the house did we see the very large parking area....OK, felt better.
We entered and figured out this is an order and pay first place. Tough as not a local to figure out what you want with a little time pressure felt from folks behind us. Got it figured out, but had trouble finding and understanding the beer choices.
The food came out fairly fast, I began carrying plates to the table -- where are the tools? Had to go back to the counter and ask. Never did find any ketchup.
Here's the key point, the Q is good enough to go back. Now that we understand how things work, we will be more relaxed. We live in a Lexington, just not this one!
My wife had pulled pork egg rolls. Listed as an appetizer, she could not finish them. I had the brisket sandwich, which was a nicely sized portion and very juicy. Fries were outstanding.
We will go out of our way to get back here again. The reviews are authentic.
Wow! Gluten Free options. What an awesome find. The staff were friendly and helpful. The pulled chicken was delicious and the brisket was amazing. Lots of options for sides. We would definitely return and recommend this place for a great meal.
Oh my- you pull into this total dive, and you are actually a little scared. I felt bad suggesting this place to my family when we pulled up and saw the condition of the facilities. It is off the beaten path. However, we were starving,...and my husband took comfort in the very full parking lot. We walked in and the place was PACKED. The walls are covered in visitor's graffiti, all disposable and paper products, signs everywhere to bus your own tables; this is a bare bones, no frills place for sure, and they were doing a brisk business. All 3 of us in our party ordered 3 different sandwiches and 3 different sides, with 3 different sauces. EVERYTHING was amazing. Fantastic sauce, sandwiches and sides. The menu is large, and pretty much a do-your-own by the time you choose your meat, side and sauce, so something for everyone. I highly recommend, with a warning to not be put off by the condition of the property when you first pull in!More
Stopped by Red State BBQ on our trip to Frankfort/Lexington this weekend. Had heard good things about Red State so thought we’d stop by. We were so disappointed in the food there.
The brisket and pulled pork had no rub or smoke flavor. Brisket was...dry and tough. Pulled pork was moister, but still no flavor. Pulled chicken had a little bit of flavor but dry.
Tried the BBQ egg rolls and again, little to no flavor. Great concept, but disappointing.
As for sides, the beer cheese grits were on and the corn pudding was lacking something.
Was really looking forward to trying this place but ended up very disappointed.More

Hey Nickie, you know it would have been one thing if you had just left your review on Google and left it at that. I would have gotten with our staff to discuss and make sure something hadn't gotten screwed up. It would have been...More
We visited around 6pm on a weeknightand got the last inside table, although the line moves along and the tables turnover fairly quickly. The ribs were our favorite, and it was fun sampling sauces. The brisket was good, but mot world class and its portion...alone was small. The sausage was wretched: The chocolate toffee cup was an OK dessert, but not the knockout we hoped for. We had read the place looked a little sketchy, but in Texas it would be a “nice joint”. The hotel behind, however, did indeed look sketch.More
Found this place off I-64 on a cross-country trip, looking to try some local fare instead of your typical roadside fast food. Attracted by the picnic tables as well as the menu! Sadly, for all the hype & the local ambiance of the place, we...were sorely disappointed. The pulled pork tasted ok but was super dry. The brisket was cold, tasteless & rubbery - so bad we ended up throwing it away. It was cold, tasteless & rubbery (wrst brisket I’ve ever had😞). Maybe we just got there on a bad day?More
