My bride and I chose to dine here after hiking the Tallgrass Prairie Reserve. Ad Astra proved to be an incredible cap to an incredible day. The place is warm and inviting located in the small town of Strong City just a couple miles south...of the Preserve. We started with the Brussel sprouts in the ginger sauce and we thoroughly enjoyed them. Who knew that brussel sprouts could be so amazingly tasty!??? I had the Bison Burger Prairie Fire and although these types of burgers are never as hot as I’d prefer it was still very good and the bison was juicy and delicious. My wife had the French dip and we both couldn’t believe how tender the meat was. It really did melt in our mouths. The house made chips were good not great but everything else including the beer menu, cocktail menu and service were truly outstanding. We look forward to driving the Flint Hills Scenic Scenic Byway in the future and we will most definitely stop in again for the fantastic food and hospitality. Thank you, Ad Astra, for making a wonderful day even better.More

not too impressive from outside but asked some locals (our B&B host) about it and they said it was very good. Wasn't open Wed .though and wound up getting an inferior meal at Grand Central in Cottonwood Falls. So we were looking forward to our...supper at Ad Astra. Surprised by how busy it was. Bringing in locals and tourists. Comfy nice interior with a very good waitress. Priced in-line with what we are used too for good and creative food. Our only complaints were mustard instead of thousand island on Rueben. (No options offered) (and no dill spear? that a regional thing?) and cod was great but a little on the brown crispy side. Tiny portion of coleslaw also. Tried to ask for more but waitress was pretty busy. homemade chips very good but cold, but we are spoiled by our local Jeff City Lutz's BBQ chips hot with a choice of a dozen seasonings. Overall a good meal.More

My husband and I were in the area for a get away weekend. We chose Ad Astra for lunch and it was SO good!! Best French dip sandwich I have ever had! Good chips and salsa too. Yummy queisidillas! We liked it so well we...went back the next day. Both times the wait staff was friendly and accommodating. Will definitely eat here again when we are in the area.More

I have eaten here twice and really like it. Great service and very good food and if you blink you will miss it. I will travel the hour just to eat at Ad Astra.

I've been here a few times and they've pretty much hit the mark but missed it this time. The B team must have been working. I ordered two flat breads and one came out burned and the other was border-line burned. I bought a loaf...of bread and sadly that was on the dark side and kind of hard. I also bought two cinnamon rolls to take home and guess what??? One was burned and both were hard. Now, keep in mind, that these rolls are $6 each. Very expensive for a small, hard, semi-burned cinnamon roll, especially since these were smaller than the other times I bought them. Over-all a very disappointing trip and not sure if I'll go back anytime soon.More

Had a mid-day meal here on Sunday after spending time hiking at the near by Tall Grass Prairie Hiking Preserve. Located in the downtown area of a very, very small Kansas town. It had good reviews on TA so we checked it out. Overall good....Menu is a big step above typical bar food - a big step above typical small town diner food. Has everything from Cod fish and chips, to steaks, burgers, trout, etc. We thought prices were reasonable. Interior seats about 30 at tables, and another 10 at a bar, plus a few more at small stool counters. Interior decorations are varied - ranging from brick and stone walls, to galvanized barn type siding, tin ceiling with fans, to horse tack, to pictures Small single TV in bar area. We had egg rolls and Reuben Sandwich. Both were good. Dipping sauce for egg rolls tasted like Mayo (not great) and the garlic cole slaw was bland, and looked and tasted like only cabbage with mayo dressing. We had never eaten fried brussell sprouts, one of the restaurant's favorites, so we tried them as a side order One unusual thing was method of presenting total check / bill to us. Instead of anything on paper, the server came over with her electronic order pad and just told us what the total was. I always like to take a quick look at the "check" to make sure it is correct, but this method does not afford that opportunity. We would recommend to anyone to give it a try - and we would go back again if ever in the area.More

We brought out of town relatives to the area to see the sights. The old building is quaint and has atmosphere. But, it is way overpriced. We had the fried brussel sprouts which were awesome, the daily chimichanga special, the apple salad (added chicken was...an additional charge!) And a kids cheese quesadilla, 2 sodas . Our bill was over $50! Choices are limited In the area, and we will look harder for another lunch spot next time. We will never come here again. The food was ok, but definitely not worth the cost.More

The service was top notch. The setting was truly rural. Food was very good with excellent deserts. I would go back.

Nostalgic street setting, curtains inside the doorway gives you an interesting feeling of old speakeasy but once past it's a pleasant visual surprise with an open area with tables and old time bar and decor. All tables were taken with a wait list but plenty...of open spots at the bar. Ordered adult beverage, chips/salsa and shared quesadillas. Chips were homemade and some of the best ever had. Quesadillas were good. Service was excellent. Price was normal. Would go there again.More

A 21st century experience in the middle of nowhere... food was great, service superb, but a little pricey. Overall, a very worthwhile experience.
