Grabbed the pulled pork sandwich and one side lunch special for six dollars. Soft drinks at self serve are $2.5 for a decent size cup. Sandwich good size with fair serving of the pulled pork on a white bun. Served with sauce. The sauce amount...was just right but they offered more sauce in a small cup of needed. The fries were outstanding in taste. Nicely seasoned and an extremely large serving. You might consider sharing fries. All in all excellent. Prices for non specials are what you'd expect. Inside store is clean, staff friendly. Covid protocols are in place and enforced. They haven't blocked off tables but people spread out nicely. Arrived 1145 and had only one person in front.More

It was a miserable rainy day when I stopped in for carry out. The service was fantastic and the food was very good. We got ribs which by the way are $15 a rack, so we got two. Also the pulled pork sandwich with slaw...on it, it was very good. Don’t sleep on the fries. The BBQ sauce was probably only item that we did not find to be very good. It wasn’t horrible just wasn’t great. We would most definitely go there again, they had some nachos that looked great.More

We ordered cary out from the counter. Person behind the counter was friendly and helpful. He also made great recommendations on what to order. Restaurant is decorated with license plates from across the country and KC sports memorabilia (Royals and Chiefs). Ribs and French fries...were the best part of the meal.More

Ribs were a bit rough (fatty, overcooked), but good flavor. The sandwiches were overpriced. Fries were very good. Beware I'm biased towards the other bbq places I generally go to.

Bates city Shawnee has great barbecue. The variety is excellent from ribs to burnt ends to many other choices, and it is all great. And to top it off, they offer some of the best fries I have ever tasted.

The fries are great. Burnt end and Brisket sandwiches were both good. Sauce is a little sweet but tasty.

The restaurant if filled with memorabilia and funny sayings from the owner. The pork ribs are a real bargaina and we usually get them and fries. The French fries look like scraps, but taste great!

Went to visit family and had to have some good bbq, so our family living in the area led us to Bates City—-a very clean place with decor that makes you feel right at home. The kids had a variety of ribs, pulled pork and...chicken tenders, and the adults had a good sampling of the menu—-the brisket and pulled pork are outstanding but the the burnt ends plate is highly recommended—-very tender and flavorful—-if you want good solid bbq you will be very pleased to visit this friendly place with attentive service oriented staff—good experienceMore

I've eaten here for yrs. but the quality just continues to slide downhill. Ordered takeout to serve 10 family members and it was bad. If you like very dry, think sand dry beef with a slight, been in the refrigerator for days taste, you're gonna...love this. Good fries, bad bbqMore

LOVE this small hidden gem! This is one of our favorite places to get excellent BBQ in KC. Portion sizes are big, fries are amazing and any of the meat is perfectly smoked. We go at least once a month and have never had a...bad meal. Even our kids love it!More

There are many different was to prepare BBQ ribs. When served, some arrive with very little fat and almost dry while others are more juicy and still have a little fat that hasn't been cooked off. Bates serves the latter variety and they are Great!...I just wish that I was skinny enough to eat them more often. We always ask that the fries be made extra crispy....because that is the way we like them and the Bates staff is willing to accommodate us. Served crispy these are some of the best fries in the entire KC area. The restaurant closed a little earlier than I would like... which means I usually have to rush over to pick up a slab to take home just before they close...but taking a chance and exceeding the speed limit a bit is worth it to get there in time!More

I would consider myself something of a connoisseur of KC BBQ. I've been to most of the places in town...but hadn't been here. My wife and I split the burnt ends, beans and fries. The burnt ends and beans were average by Kansas City standards,...which is to say there were good. The fries were hand cut, lightly seasoned, and excellent.More

Visited Bates City tonight and ordered the burnt ends dinner with baked beans. It was pretty good. We have had burnt ends in several places in town and these are my favorite so far. Most places--including the expensive ones--have a ton of fat on them...and I spend more time picking the meat apart than eating. That being said--the burnt ends are a bit dry, but to me they should be considering how long they cook for. Baked beans were good and I will order them again, but not my absolute favorite. Great place for a really quick and easy dinner.More
