We had been here before, but we went in to see how they have progressed as they have gotten established. The place was half-full, which is good, because the dining room is huge. The menu was varied, although we still have not tried their Korean...fare... we'll have to go back! The miso soup was tasty, the sushi rolls were well-composed, and the teriyaki chicken was excellent. The waiter ... a young man of Korean origin... was extremely pleasant and patient with us. Great to see such ideal attention to customers. The only thing was that he and one other waiter were covering the whole restaurant. And the bar ... so there were times when our waiter was absent, looking after other customers. The owners are, I think, going to have to hire some more staff, if the restaurant is to be a full success.More

Lawrence is a great eating city, but can be pretty challenging as far as quality Japanese food goes. That is, there has been a lot of turnover in one of the traditional spots (Kokoro for a while), and not enough turnover in another (Wa). This...restaurant, however, is located in a spot that has turned over several times, but maybe we will see a change now. That is, at difference with previous iterations in this spot, this place looks pretty good. We ordered a very simple roll made with avocado, plus teriyaki, tempura, fried rice, and one Korean dish. To be very honest, everything was great! Indeed, the service was kind and gentle, and very attentive to the needs of our younger members of our party. Clearly, I will have to come back, and try a bit more on the sushi and of the menu, but this looks very promising. I wish this enterprise very well, and hope that my next visit is as rewarding as this one was.More

Came for lunch with my wife. The place was empty but it was early. The waitress was awesome she offered some suggestions and was very attentive. We split a lunch that came with 2 sushi rolls and some soup. The sushi was good nothing to...write home about. The gyoza was really good. We will definitely be back if anything for the price.More

This was recommended by Scott at the front desk of the Townsuites ( he doesn't like sushi, but pays attention to what others have said) I sat at the Sushi Bar and enjoyed a relaxed evening of good sushi. The rolls were very large and...the fish tasted fresh. The staff was great and the ambiance is fine.More

Read my review of 5 weeks ago and see the bad news. Knew this might not be a good evening when I saw the front door covered with help wanted flyers, salt water aquarium missing, and no friendly hostess, plus a new chef. Sat alone...at sushi bar; chef barely acknowledged me; less than 10 other customers in the hour I was there. Asked for tea - given one small pot for entire meal, no refill, no water offered. Sushi cooler had only one small section filled - the usual tuna, yellowtail, salmon, cooked shrimp and eel. Asked about other tunas - nope. Red snapper - nope. Flounder - nope. Bellies - nope. Japanese scallops - yes, shocking. Asked for 12 pieces of sashimi - "use your imagination." Asked for "your favorite roll - no restrictions - never got an acknowledgment. Adequate, but nothing special. No creativity - tried to engage in conversation but gave up, chef too occupied reading ingredient lists from piece of hand-written paper on top of sushi bar. Just handed a check by waiter, so I guessed the meal was over. Really hate to be so negative but have no reason to go back, Thought I had found a good place in the middle of the Kansas prairie, but it was short-lived. Too bad so little effort given to service or food, especially in taking over an established restaurant.More

Regularly in Topeka for business but the sushi scene there is grocery store quality. Sushi Ko in Lawrence, 30 minutes away, was recommended. Very glad I made the trip, not just once but 4 times in the last 3 months, to the point where the...sushi chef and I have bonded quite nicely over his skills and high quality fish. Typically, I will let him prepare 1-012 pieces of sashimi, his choice, and he then usually adds a few "specials" of his own making - for example, Japanese scallops seared, with sesame oil, or three types of salmon, one with a quail egg. He will create rolls not on the menu. My advice -take a seat at the sushi bar, tell the chef to make you what he likes. Was going to have Uni one night, but chef tasted it and did not like the texture so he would not serve it. Very commendable. Very reasonable price -$50 for "chef special" - would have been 3x that in Chicago.More

The sushi was great. They were very accommodating to special requests. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Very kid friendly too with surprise balloon animals at the end! This will definitely be our go to sushi place in Lawrence!

I love mackerel sashimi, and it MUST be fresh to be enjoyed; I am reviewing this place because it is the first place to have consistently good mackerel in the midwest, and for that matter all its seafood has been fresh. Drinks are great too,...especially the melting snow. Setting is aesthetically lovely, very much like when we were actually in Tokyo. Spouse got the teriyaki chicken and veggies and it was actually brought out on a flaming platter, very tasty, and improved from being warmed by the flame as we ate it. Little things like complementary drinks and dessert were a nice addition and the rolls were fresh too, thought I prefer more simple Japanese food, both for taste and because I try to eat Keto most often. As a benefit that is possible here (if you aren't too hard core on trace ingredients) by getting sashimi, salad, miso, veggies or hot plate of chicken or fish. A very fulfilling meal when I try to stick to keto choices, which is not common for most restaurants. Great spot for romantic atmosphere too!More
