Do not confuse Vietnam Cafe 39 with the wonderful restaurant that is on Campbell. We ate at the VC39 on State Line and 39th because it was convenient. That is the only good thing about it. The place was virtually empty, but we still had...to wait forever to get our order taken. They forgot one of our appetizers. The chicken in my basil chicken was so overcooked that some pieces were virtually crispy. Our sweet potato and shrimp appetizer had at most three shrimp. The decor was at best dingy. The top two feet of the mirrors which hang on every wall had not not been cleaned in ages. The ceiling tiles had not been replaced in who knows how long and were at best dingy gray. Very disappointing.More

Had the crab Rangoon and fried rice while on a business trip to Kansas City ... although neither was very Vietnamese ... they were very very good! And the portion size of the Fried Rice would have fed me for at least two days. Both...dishes were very hot and came very quickly. I think I came a little close to closing time, so although i did get good service, I could tell the crew was a little anxious to get the remaining few remaining customers out, LOL ... From the outside of this establishment I didn't expect much, but it far exceeded my expectation and if I find myself in that location again, I would def. stop by for another visit.More

My go to Vietnamese food is bun, so I had pork bun and iced coffee. I like my meat in chunks not shedded/chipped but after that it was ok. There is better down on 5th Street Service was meh, I had to ask where my...coffee was. The depressing part was the decor. Tired and worn out, bad lighting and zero ambience. There is better places than this.More

I love the food here! Very fresh and flavorful. If you haven’t been here before you may be caught off guard by the building. It’s pretty old but never fear, the food it great!

This was our first time trying Vietnamese cuisine and we loved it. All of the appetizers are freshly made. These were the best crab rangoons I had ever eaten! We also had the shrimp rolls. Wonderful! The sauces are also homemade. The sweet n sour...and fish sauce( which is like duck sauce but with a fishy tangy taste) were delicious and came with the appetizers. My husband ordered the pho with beef and I ordered the bon which is a type of salad on noodles with Vietnamese pork and chopped egg roll. It is also served with fish sauce. I thought it might be cold because it was a salad but was warm and delicious. When I go back I will order this again. We had a great time trying something new to us. The pho would be so perfect on a cold winter day!More

Their Pho is excellent for a great price. Large serving so take some home for another meal. The building is old but dont let that keep you from trying their pho.

Stopped by for early lunch after doc apt at KU med. tried Pho first time. So good. Hard to eat. Messy. Ha. I had egg rolls. I loved it all. The atmosphere was strange. Will go back every time I’m at doc now.

I had my expectations surely surpassed by this restaurant. Although the ambiance is not really elaborate, the Pho is incredibly rich and delicious, with an exquisite elaboration of taste and texture. I had never eaten so good a Vietnamese dish before. Am definitely going there...again. The price is also very fair. The only backside is that they have no liquor licence yet.More

I came with a friend from Asia, he has traveled to Vietnam several times and was very excited to show me the "authentic" Vietnamese food here. This was my first time having Vietnamese and I enjoyed thoroughly! I will most likely be back (the location...is a bit sketchy, however)More

Hi Anne! Yes, there are a quite a few gluten free options here but I'd definitely talk to a server about items that have small amounts of wheat like soy sauce and hoisin that they not only cook with, but are also used as... More
