Stopped for lunch and had chili and a salad and wife had a burger. Kind of mediocre on both counts - lots of people there and seemed like the fried stuff was the main things people ordered. Worth the history, but not the food. Prices were inexpensive though. Very very busy and hard working staff.

This was our first visit and we were not disappointed. Salad bar came with the fried chicken dinner. The salad bar was very good with fresh items. The fried chicken and chicken fried steak were both very good. Shared strawberry pie. Good service and very pleasant atmosphere. Very reasonable prices as well.

Saw this place and thought it looked interesting, so we stopped. We had the Sunday fried chicken buffet. It was cheaper than many of the other options and also included your drink. The buffet didn't have a large variety, but everything was very good. I did add salt and pepper to my gravy and green bean casserole, but when I... More

This is a great historic restaurant in a very historic town. The Hays House has been in continuous business since the Santa Fe Trail Days. The service is good and the food is okay. The real draw is the history of both this place and many other attractions around town.

We visited on a Sunday and decided on the chicken buffet because at $14.95, it looked mine The best deal and almost everyone ok The place was having on. The decor was rustic and we had good service. Our waitress was very attentive even though we had the buffet. The salad bar was okay and could have used a few... More

Very good service. Good enough food. Nice atmosphere, great old downtown street. Plan to stop here. Afterwards you can go next door and shop for antiques or continue a drive through the Flint Hills.

We had a lovely lunch at Hays, with homemade lemonade, homemade chicken salad, homemade coconut cream pie, etc. The service is as good as the food, and the restaurant is housed in a historic building. In fact, it's been operating as a restaurant since 1857.

We stopped here for breakfast during our trip on the Santa Fe Trail. The food was great and our server was happy to share the history of the building with us. He turned on the basement lights so that we could see the original foundation of the building.

I love going to the Hays House for their basic items such as a great steak, or their sometimes unusual sides and vegetables. Their fresh strawberry pie and fresh peach pie is so big, but worth skipping lunch for!

My wife and I stopped by for lunch. We've never been here before and are glad we made the trip. I had the chicken-bacon, cheddar pasta as it was their daily special. It was good. Staff was friendly and per their suggestion we walked both upstairs and to the basement of the building to look around after we ate. It's... More
