Delicious filet mignon

My manager and I decided to stay in because it was cold out and I'm so happy we did. He ordered a pasta dish with local made sausage that he loved. I ordered a filet mignon with demi sauce and it was cooked perfectly and tasted just as good. The salad was plentiful and very fresh. I would eat here again if in the area.

A nice restaurant

Johnny's Italian steakhouse I thought I'd try a late lunch at Johnny's walked in and I heard Frank Sinatra on the speakers and then segued into a little Louis Armstrong so I thought this could be really good. It's always nice to hear Little jazz in the background for a change. Restaurants and bars are also about expectations, what type of bar and restaurant are you going to? And everyone is under staffed, so I always appreciate the service staff who are working. The restaurant itself has classic type vibe, with lots of polished dark wood. I can say as a single person that it's also welcoming The hostess was very gracious set me right away and the waiter (Jordan) also was very good. I looked at the table as I sat down and there was a class container like an old school sugar container with a spoon except it contained fresh shaved Parmesan cheese, the salt and pepper had small grinders attached to each one, and a little bottle of olive oil, to complete the initial ambiance.I know it's inside the Hilton hotel and it reminds me of the old Hiltons and the style and grace that used to define their difference. I had a side salad instead of fries with my sandwich it was served right away with a very tasty balsamic dressing it also had an Italian pepper and fresh grated Parmesan cheese in it. I asked for just one piece of bread and it was outstanding you can really taste that it was Italian, and found out they baked their own bread. The sandwich I ordered…."The ultimate Italian beef sandwich" came and and it lived up to its name in the menu. The meat was shaved prime rib that the restaurant makes itself every week for the prime rib dinner and then they save some for sandwiches during the week. It was outstanding. The peppers and onions that they put on the sandwich were also freshly roasted you could tell they were just cut and then roasted and put on the sandwich. They also put some of their house-made spicy giardiniera and provolone cheese on a toasted baguette. It really takes Italian beef to a new level. There's lots of other traditional Italian dishes on the menu as well and some other sandwiches and steaks of course so I think there's plenty of choices for a late lunch. Of course the prices are a little higher but I think it reflects in the quality of the food in the service. It reminds me of back in the day of some old school Italian steakhouses that I was in in little Italy in Cleveland, Chicago, and old Las Vegas.

Food was outstanding as usual

Food was outstanding as usual as I’ve eaten here many times as I always stay at on if my favorite hotels the Hilton tapestry. Unfortunately I drew the short straw and got Dan as my server. He was so occupied with one table of 5 men that were ordering expensive drinks that I was invisible. Had the other servers even ask if I had been served! I will be back but I assure you that Dan will not be my waiter! Dan times are tuff in your industry I would strongly suggest you would give your best to ALL your guests! There’s plenty of people out of work that would give anything to be making money.

Not a good experience

I’m not sure why this place has such good reviews. We went here the day after Valentines to celebrate & we had very few positive experiences. First of all the restaurant is located inside a Holiday Inn. We made reservations at 7:00 three weeks prior and we did not get seated until 7:45ish. When we were seated we were sat in a separate room from the restaurant that backed up to the pool I believe because we could hear kids screaming throughout the dinner and the ambience was very bad in the room, it looked as if it was a party room maybe that is not normally used. Service was lacking for sure & I had the filet Oscar and my husband had the 10 oz filet and both were very average. This place was not what I was expecting at all. I would not visit again.

Celebrating Our 45th Wedding Anniversary was Horrible!!

My husbsnd and I were celebrating our 45th Wedding Anniversary in the evening and most of the food was " ok", but we couldn't believe how bad the Filet Mignon's were!!- They were burnt on both sides and bloody in the middle for medium rare. The asperagus was aweful, too. Undercooked and almost raw. We feel very unhappy about spending $88.00 + tip on our horrible experience.

Wonderful meal from the appetizers to entrees. Servings were very generous. Waiter Chris did an excellent job explaining specials and gave recommendations on other menu items.. Wish we would have had room to try an item from the dessert menu. Will definitely be back on our next trip through Altoona and will hopefully have Chris as a waiter.

A lovely lunch

We went for lunch for an anniversary celebration. The service was excellent and the food delicious. We had stuffed mushrooms as an appetizer, and chicken salad and meatloaf as entrées. The meals were a very generous size. The atmosphere is lovely. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Outstanding service and food

I had the Veal Sinatra…outstanding. My wife had a steak filet, which arrived undercooked. Our server immediately returned it to the kitchen. It was replaced by a new steak…not her original steak! In addition, we were offered and accepted a complimentary desert, which was also outstanding. I rate the food and service as outstanding and we will certainly return soon.

Great food, atmosphere, and service!

WE were celebrating a couple of birthdays and wanted a special night. We were not disappointed at Johnny's in West Des Moines! From the quiet, elegant atmosphere to the service which was supported by food runners, bussers, and excellent waitstaff, everything supported a great meal. One of us had the 14 oz. Prime Rib, which melted in our mouths. The steak diabolo was ok, not award winning, but the steak was great. Our server (Liz) made the meal wonderful with attentive service and attention to detail.

Must Eat Here if in the Area

Absolutely amazing food! We knew we were in for a treat when the bread came out and it was perfect. Followed by amazing salad, fried calamari, and perfectly prepared ribeye with mushrooms, and medallion trio. And the sides were just as good. Also, the service was outstanding.

great service and food Saturday. Lasagna was great waitress did awesome job great server, had the lasagna and wife had monte Cristo. Never waited for refills ,very attentive to us great privacy place by window is nice touch

$23 Steak Dinner. Cannot beat it.

Came for dinner while in town for business. Ordered a top sirloin dinner for $23. Came with salad, bread and a baked potato. Great deal and the steak was not half bad! Better that the chain steak restaurants. Service decent.

Lunch Bunch group goes out every Tuesday and goes to different restaurants

We had a wonderful waitress. Her name was Spencer! Very patient and was very polite. We were a large group, and yet she did such a good job taking care of us we were really pleased. The soup of the day was seafood bisque, and it was outstanding. I had the meatloaf, and it was very very good.

Julie, the front of house exec is wonderful. She is personable, genuine and completely customer focused. Our waitperson Alyssa was amazing and the food - prime rib (him) and beef wellington (me) were spot on! Next time we find ourselves in WDM - we will be back here.
