We visited this bakery after hearing many good things about it. We were there during the busy outdoor Antique Father's Day weekend show, but we didn't visit the bakery until after 2 in the afternoon.
They have cases that hold the bakery against the wall...(like in a lower quality grocery store) where everyone puts their hands in it to take out the item they want (some do this without tongs or wax paper and just use their bare hands--some even pick up several with their hands and put them down again to make another selection.....ewwwwwww....all that sweat and hair). The bottled pop was also in a cooler that is self serve and both areas were not well stocked.
We selected chocolate covered with white cream Long John's and then after placing them in a bag, stood in line waiting for a cashier to ring us our $2 order behind 7 other people. The young gal behind the counter was not friendly, efficient, or trained. I could have eaten my Long John about 10 times while i waited in line. We snagged a table at the front window which allowed us to watch all of the flies buzzing around them and our bakery and pop as well as whiz in and out of the bakery cases. So NOT clean, NOT appetizing or NOT a small town quaint, old-fashioned place, as we had heard. I wonder about their (lack of) standards of cleanliness, service, and hospitality. (Don't they have health codes they need to adhere to?)
Although we go to Walnut about two to three times a year, we'll never go back to this bakery. The Long John itself tasted like nothing but greasy cooking oil with a mere hint of chocolate on top. The best thing I can think of about our experience was that we appreciated the architecture of the building and we have a new appreciation for our favorite, clean, well-run bakeries with tasty temptations.More
