We have been going to this restaurant for over a decade and in the past have told others what a great find it was. Not any more. Something has changed here, the portions were much smaller than in the past, the majority of the food was barely warm, the meat was tough, a telling sign that most of the meal... More

Very good German food in the boonies of eastern Iowa. Probably the best sauerkraut we've ever had. The rest of the food is good as well, especially the brats. Nothing fancy about the place, but just good food.

When you first walk up you are stoked because you see their miniature horses the reside on the side of the restaurant. Once you get inside you think, Oh this is a nice ma and pa place. However, we came in with a large group and even called ahead of time. It took over an hour to get are food... More

We've always loved the Hillside in previous visits: food, service, great German beer! But our recent visit gets a : ( THE GOOD: My duck breast was delicious, as always; the red cabbage and spaetzle were very good. Our order taker/food server was polite and checked back. The bartender and kitchen employees were helping the waitresses. (If extra wait staff... More

Used to come here occasionally for the past several years and it was great. Our last visit 5/14 was a horrible experience. The hostess/waitress was snotty, rude and ignorant, and the food has taken a nose dive. Steak looked like the "pre-cooked" cafeteria kind with fake grill marks and tasted like crap. Is this place under new management? Ugh!

Located out in the country between Clinton and Sabula. Nice atmosphere although I'm guessing it's a bit loud when crowded. I've been here a few times and generally have the beef and/or pork dishes which are consistently good. Side dishes and appetizers not quite up to the same level but still tasty. They have a few German beers available which... More

Sunday is all you can eat Sauerbraten or sliced Roast Beef served with green beans and mashed potatoes or spaetzel. Gravy optional. Can't go wrong there. If you like split pea soup, they have homemade there. One of the best things is the house salad dressing. It's a mustard garlic - more ranch than mustard. If you don't have a... More

Description
Hillside Stables Restaurant was founded by Carol and Volker Nass in 2000. Purchased in 2012 by Angela Giannetti-Snyder, the restaurant serves authentic German specialties and American favorites in a casual, friendly, old-world atmosphere. Our menu offers a large selection of hand-cut, char-broiled steaks, fish and seafood - deep-fried or grilled with our own house marinade, a variety of "schnitzels", juicy marinated grill pork steaks, zesty German sausages, our signature chicken and duck, and much more
