We haven't been to Rube's in some time and decided it would be nice this past weekend. It used to be just stop in, but word is out on how great it is, so now it is best to make a reservation in advance (at least a week for weekends). Glad we did as it was very busy, but we got in soon and got a nice quiet table. As always the steaks were very good. (you grill your own). Rube's always has a cozy atmosphere. We like standing by the warm grills in the winter too.

Road tripped up to Montour with a large group from a business meeting. Loved cooking my own steak, they had charcoal and gas pits to choose from. Steaks were excellent as well as all of the sides. Nothing like drinking cold beer and cooking your own steak when you are away from home on a business trip. Very much worth the drive.

We went for a family dinner. Here was the breakdown of the overall night with food ratings:
Skillet potatoes: 9.6/10
Baked Beans: 8.7/10
Texas Toast: 9.1/10 (season it with garlic salt)
Salad: 8.4/10 (make sure to get the Buttermilk ranch is was incredible, better than house)
Mac and Cheese:
Sirloin: 8.9/10 (I overcooked it)
Tips: Make sure to evenly cook the steak in the middle of the grill.

Cooking our own steak did not seem as much a big deal to us as it obviously was to previous reviewers- we just wanted a good dinner. There are other places where you cook your own meat.
All in all we had a nice meal- fully priced steaks were as advertised and of excellent quality. Sides ok- nothing special tho.
Some Iowa microbrews on tap- wine list what you would expect in rural Iowa.
No less expensive entrees- expect to pay up for dinner.

We are the original grill your own in Iowa, and possibly the USA, as we will turn 50 next year! Many have copied our concept, so perhaps you've experienced a grill your own elsewhere. I'm glad you came and visited our little spot in small-town Iowa!
Our wine list is specially curated for our restaurant, with moderate to higher-end wines from smaller to medium family wineries across the world. You won't find "grocery store" wines on our wine list, nor will you find wines you may regularly see in other restaurants. This may feel like a rural wine list to you, and we are proud of accomplishing this special feel. We have a variety of highly rated whites, reds, sparkling, sweet, dry - if there's something you'd like to see that we haven't covered, please let us know. We love feedback from our guests!
The craft beer selection in Iowa is fantastic, with so many excellent choices. It's so hard to choose, so we switch these out ever few months to make room for new beers as well as old favorites. This is an especially fun part of our jobs!
Our sides are prepared from scratch in our kitchen. What do you think we are missing? We have added a few items since you dined with us. I'd love to hear your ideas!
Our steaks are high-end, and they are thick and generously cut. Our entrées range from $20 - $46, and the prices essentially are driven by the market price and size of steak. Veggie entrées and Salad and Spuds entrées are under $15.

First timers - one word - AMAZING! Hubby had the ribeye and I had the filet. Hands down one of the best steaks we’ve had. Fantastic atmosphere. Would recommend in a heartbeat!

I rarely give a restaurant five stars. Rube’s has the best steak I’ve eaten in any restaurant in 41 states. I had the bone in ribeye. You cook your own steak so I must say I cooked it perfectly. My husband had the bacon wrapped ribeye. Excellent flavor. The skillet potatoes are seasoned well and delicious.
Jerrod was wonderful explaining everything to us. Five stars for service.
The little bacon sundae for dessert... 😍

This was our first trip to Rube's. Read several reviews and they were talking about the large steaks. We took a cooler with us because we live a ways away and it was hot.
Salad bar was good, baked beans were great, baked and fried potatoes. Cook your own Texas toast..
Picked our you steak and grilled it.

We visited on a Sunday night with a group of friends. After taking our orders and a trip to the salad bar, our waiter took us to the meat counter where we picked our steak out. Our waiter talked through the choices and we could pick the exact steak that we wanted. My wife and I elected to share a bacon wrapped ribeye. We proceeded to the grill where there was unlimited Texas toast to grill while grilled your own steak. When the steak was finished we grabbed some potatoes with onions and peppers from the grill and returned to our table. All the food was delicious and it was a great experience! I would recommend this for a fun group or family outing.

First Time at Rube's with a party of 10, wouldn't miss it !
The filet Steak was awsome, doing in a group, Standing around the bis grill was a great experience. You can choose your steak and the sides you like and prepare it at the grill by yourself.

We just visited this place and I had the cowboy steak which was really really good, but the girl who served our table made it even better, she was so nice and the man who worked there pointed out out tire was a bit flat and showed us to the nearest gas station which was a big help!
One of the nicest restaurants we visited in Canada.
Had a table next to a fireplace as well ;)

Love this place! If you are looking for the best steak in Iowa this is it. Pick it out, grill it up, snack on buttered Texas toast while you chat grill side. Salad bar is simple but fresh and delicious!

Salad bar is good and also we pick which steak and cook on our own on the grill. Roast Potatoes is sooooo good.. we made our own garlic toast. We loved it! Something different and never see customers cook their own food. Neat!!

I was visiting on business and we went to Rube’s with a large group. This was my second time ever visiting here and first time in over 10 years. Rube’s is a special place. It has been here for a long time and has not changed much. Come for the steak and the experience!
The bar has a nice selection of national and local brews available.we spent an hour or so socializing before coming to the butcher case to pick our meats. Most of the steaks are huge and you pick from bacon wrapped filet- 8 oz or 16 oz, 20 oz giant steak or 11 oz ny strip or ribeye, as well as some enticing sirloin options.
You can get many different side orders including asparagus spears, mushrooms in cast iron pans, jalapeño corn, Mac & cheese, shrimp skewers and other options.
I had the 8oz bacon wrapped filet butterflies to make for easier cooking with a jumbo shrimp skewer. Then the fun begins as you get to cook your own meal and sides. I understand for some this can be intimidating but I felt more confident this time with the butterflied steak making it easier to cook.
While cooking you can butter up some Texas toast and grill it for a great appetizer or side. They also have a huge skillet of roasted potatoes with onion and peppers and a pot of baked potatoes. You can add rubs, salt, pepper garlic salt or powder etc as you wish.
The salad bar is kind of plain but featured homemade dressings and a nice pot of baked beans. That salad bar took me back to the salad bars of my childhood in the 60’s and 70’s and probably hasn’t changed much since those days!
Top it off with a rich dessert tray and this has the makings of a memorable meal!
My steak was perfect and the entire experience was great watching and helping each other do our cooking on huge charcoal grills!

Great concept and an amazing atmosphere. You cook for yourself. All meet options are top and side options great. Try the crab stuffed mushroom.
