IPTV opened our eyes to this bakery and finally got to around to trying it. It did not disappoint. The croissants were flaky and delicious. The drop coffee was strong and the vanilla steamer was a treat. Service was friendly and helpful. Definitely will be...back.More

I was lucky to stumble upon this gem bakery on a recent trip to Iowa City while visiting a good friend. He introduced me to the bakery's owner, Jamie, who leads the creation of all their sweet and savory baked goods. Every morning, they serve...sweet cinnamon rolls, decadent coffee cake, filled croissants, fresh breads and many other confections (crème brulee, petit fours, etc) with barista made coffee to order. The vibe is cool with friendly energy. It's a great place to grab a bite to eat, surf the net on their WiFi, or people watch. On the weekend, they have special brioche sandwiches which are simply out of this world. They recently celebrated 15 years of business in Iowa City. They had customers, neighborhood members and previous employees all celebrating with them. This bakery is not just a place that turns out great cakes and croissants, but a community gem and asset. If you are in Iowa City, you need to stop in here for a cuppa steaming coffee and a baked treat. You won't regret it!More

I hadn't been here after their recent renovations so I thought it would be worth giving another chance. I was wrong and my original thoughts were still spot on. The customer service is poor. The owner is was so rude with interactions! I couldn't believe...it and this turned me off immediately. The quiche was meh, burnt on edges. Coffee was fine. I live for cookies and they were very crumbly and flavorless. Too bad, I want to like this place. Also not very customer friendly, no parking within 3 blocks.More

Saw this place on a Iowa public tv show titled peaches. In the middle of a residential area with no parking. Having said this, we had a nice walk there and got a couple of things that were good. Will do again for a special...occasion.More

I first patronized this bakery to order a cake for my son's graduation. I didn't want a grocery store cake with the sugary-sweet butter cream frosting and frosting roses. A friend recommended Deluxe. I wound up ordering a lemon cake with lemon curd filling, but...they were able to produce a design that expressed perfectly our sentiments as our son graduated from high school. The cake was delicate, not overly-sweet, with a light lemon flavor pleasing to the palate. It was all luscious and just perfect. Since then, we have also gotten a chocolate mocha cake, equally marvelous, and had the pleasure of attending their Sunday brunch. The quiche was light and tasty without being too heavy, and the coffee was, of course, spot on. I'm so glad I found this place, and wonder what took me so long.More

Deluxe makes good quality cakes, plies a great flourless Gluten Free chocolate cake. They took care of us on last minute cakes today. They were made to perfection. Thanks

As a frenchman, finding decent "baguette" in the US outside of large cities like NY or SF has deemed impossible. But Jamie, the owner of Deluxe Cakes and Pastries really knows her stuff. Go there, you will find usual American pastries with a great amount...of creativity for the looks. That's normal. But also "jambon-beurre" (ham and cheese) baguette sandwiches, actually better than most of what you find in Paris. Top it with a double expresso, close your eyes, and you get a taste of France and of Italy at the same time. One of the best espressos I know. Well, she has an Italian expresso machine and she learned her craft in Italy, so it makes sense! And Jamie loves to speak French and to introduce you to the wonders of Iowa City, whatever language you speak!More

I had always heard good things about Delux, and was surprised when I read the number of bad reviews. I must have been there on a good day. I have a very good apricot almond croissant and coffee for breakfast. Service was friendly and helpful....I live between France, Italy and USA - and the pastry compared favorably with what I can get in Milan and not quite as good as Paris). Coffee was weak (American) but I prefer very strong coffee. Overall, very good for a neighborhood pastry shop. Can't vouch for the cakes or cookies.More

No doubt, if you want a good looking cake, they can make one. I've seen some really nice looking cakes and cookies here, and I love the idea of a neighborhood bakery. That said, the customer service is disastrous and the flavor is terribly bland....The fondant that makes the cakes looks so pretty tastes plastic, and the cake itself is very dry. There are much better options if you want something that tastes great, such as Yummy's. The owner is really sour and should not interact with customers. Special ordered petite fours for my daughters tea party. They accidentally sold them to someone else! No apology, but instead gave us Easter themed cookies. It is just really unbelievable to see such disregard for customers in this day and age.More

I want to like them more than I do, but the attitude is sometimes surly from staff. I don't know get it. Nice tables in front when the weather is comfy. Petit fours are reliably fresh and tasty.

Within a block of my house, this was a neighborhood grocery in my childhood . Now it's a charming coffee shop with killer pastries. I even had them do the wedding cake for my last wedding...which lasted not much longer than the cake, but that's...another story. Wonderful, homey place for a cup of Joe and a cookie or three. Hours are spotty, so check the schedule before you set out.More

I keep hearing about how much other folks love this place. It is a delightful little neighborhood bakery and it must be the neighborhood that keeps it in business. I have had the very expensive wedding cake a few times and really don't like it...as there is way too much frosting and virtually no cake! I have come in about once a year for frosted cookies and although they look nice, they have always been hard, tasteless with frosting that cracks because it is so dry. Hope springs eternal!! I was excited to give the gingerbread cookies a try, as they were mentioned in a newspaper article, and again found them to have very little flavor and very hard consistency. My dog spit them out thinking they weren't food! Also, they were very expensive...$29 for 1 1/2 dozen small frosted and non-frosted cookies! I paid a lot of money to have my cookie plate look nice!More

Coffee and fresh pastry in a charming retro setting. Building is small and seating is limited, so it is best to visit with a small group or get take out. Features made from scratch eclairs, macaroons, cookies, cronuts, and other tasty pastry. They are a...little small serving-wise, but the excellent flavor makes up for it.More

It's a tiny former neighborhood grocery near the railroad tracks on one of Iowa City's most stately streets; and it's a wonderful place for breakfast or a snack. The ambiance is very casual; the atmosphere is eclectic and quaint; and the baked goods are elegant...and delicious. Come early if you want to get a seat and avoid a line. Also come early if you want one of the specialty croissant donuts - they're decadent and wonderful. I'm a fan of the ham/cheese croissant for a Saturday breakfast. Healthy is for Monday through Friday. We've been ordering cakes from Deluxe for occasions for some time. They are a bit pricey, but they do things nobody else can. Real butter, real flour, real eggs, and real sugar. Good stuff.More

Other than Target, I was having a hard time locating a bakery that made French macarons in the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City area. When I found out that Deluxe makes macarons, I was excited with high hopes that I had finally found a bakery...with a wide selection in my area. Sadly, when I went to visit them for the first time, I was wrong. They only had three flavors of macarons when I went in. Chocolate, salted caramel, and sweet pea with white chocolate. I bought two chocolate and two salted caramel, and the lady threw in a sweet pea macaron on the house. Both the chocolate and salted caramel macarons were hard and crunchy. They were visibly old. I know macarons can keep for a couple of days, and I have done this, but I have never seen them look this old. I realize that they may not sell them on a daily basis, but you should bake a lot less that way you aren't selling old macarons to your customers. Very disappointing. The lady at the counter had said that they had just baked the sweet pea macarons and I could definitely taste the difference. Although it wasn't outstanding, it was at least fresh, unlike the other four. I ended up throwing away two out of the five. They were just disappointing. Needless to say, I won't be going back to Deluxe for French macarons. I have heard they have wonderful cakes, but I would stay clear of the macs!More
