About
The Iowa City Wig & Pen is inspired by a London club of the same name whose members were either lawyers or journalists. The building is located at 230 The Strand, London and it survived both the Great Fire of London (1666) and the WWII blitz. Started in 1988 by attorney Tom Riley and purchased by Richard Querrey in 1993, the Wig & Pen Pizza Pub has been serving some of the area's best pizza, but don't take our word for it. Recently both Zagat.com and Thrillist.com have mentioned "The Wig" as the best pizza in the state of Iowa. We are also proud of the following accolades: Iowa City Press Citizen - Reader's Choice Best Pizza in Johnson County 2018 Best Pizza in Johnson County 2020 Locals Love Us - Best Pizza 2019 & Best Carryout 2019 Floods in 1993 and 2008 couldn't knock us down, as the building was completely gutted and rebuilt both times. Today, we offer a family friendly dining experienceas well as carryout of our full menu.

We were in Iowa City for a weekend trip. We looked on TA for a highly rated pizza place and Wig and Pen popped up. We could see why. Very good deep dish pizza and a generous salad made for a tasty dinner.
We ordered our usual preference of hamburger/pepperoni on their deep dish pizza. Nice flavor and very filling. We took half of our small sized pizza home. I also ordered a half Cobb salad. Tomatoes, eggs, chicken and a few other items on a nice bed of mixed greens made this a really plentiful salad.
It was nice to be able to get the salad in a smaller size. I happened to ask if they did half sizes and she said yes. (It wasn’t listed on the menu that you can get a smaller size so ask! ) Balsamic dressing was my choice and it was really good!!
Seating on the patio on a warm day could be unbearable if there were no shade but many tables have umbrellas. It made for an enjoyable and safer choice during Covid.
Our overall experience was exceptional. We would eat here again if in the area.

We escaped Minnesota during Rona lockdown and came to Iowa City for an overnight stay. We make sure we eat at Wig and Pen every single time we come. There is literally no other pizza that is this great in America. We have eaten pizza in at least 30 different states including authentic Chicago pizza, and NONE comes close to Wig and Pen. Soooo great. Extra cheese and not too thin or thick (Union Jack - Flying Tomato style) is THEE BEST!!

We ordered delivery from this wonderful restaurant and it was delicious. We didn't have to wait as long as expected and thanks to a good driver, through Chomp, the food arrived hot. The sauce was tangy and everything tasted great - including the garlic bread. We spotted the restaurant when we were out and about and had we been staying longer in the area, would have gone back.

The server never stopped by our table after we ordered our food to check to see if we needed anything nor offer to refill our drinks until later when she delivered our meals and then gave us our check. It also took nearly an hour to get the pizza that we ordered. We were also forced to wear face masks when we were not seated at the table including walking the 15 feet from the entrance to our table.. We had been to this Wig and Pen location in the past prior to Covid-19 when we visited Iowa City and liked the place but after this experience, we will not stop back in again.

We love Wig & Pen pizza, and it's generally a treat to go there for a night out. So when we were helping our nephew move in late June we decided to order a pizza for the guys and a salad for me during our lunch break. I called to order and asked about what types of salads they had. The girl on the phone mentioned a "Mediterranean salad" that sounded good, so I ordered that for myself. My husband was the one to go pick it all up. When he brought back the food the pizza, of course, looked good, but the salad was missing the dressing entirely! And my nephew didn't have any dressing at his place. But on top of that the salad was entirely iceberg lettuce with a few very finely chopped tomatoes on it, along with some green olives and some shredded carrots. That was it! And I paid $8.00 for that beauty! I was so mad I should've taken it back and asked for my money back but after spending hours going up and down moving things I wasn't in the mood. And I'm sure I would've just been too mad to communicate well if I had. I don't understand why any restaurant would offer salads if they're going to put so little effort into them! Honestly, how hard is it to make a decent salad?! I should've had actual greens, with black olives, decent sized tomatoes and maybe another little veggie thrown in for that price! So don't order any salads there unless you just love iceberg lettuce!

This restaurant has always been awesome any time I have been it. Their Chicago style pizza is awesome. Just don't order it for delivery. The last two times I ordered (both within the last month) were awful. I think the pizza might have dropped it (not sure) because the pizza had hardly any toppings on one side ; I think they slid to the other side. We had also ordered a half sausage, half canadian bacon but they covered the whole pizza with both toppings. I just ordered a small canadian bacon right now. THe driver dropped it off and it is cold. Hardly any sauce at all. Will not order delivery from them ever again

3 of us stopped in to have lunch. We ordered right away. Medium Chicago style pizza with 3 ingredients. After 40 minutes no one ever came back to see if we needed anything or to let us know our pizza was on the way. After another 5 minutes with a total of 45 minutes waiting, still no pizza. We left. We will never go back. Service was definitely crappy. It wasn’t even busy.

I looked for pizza places. This was rated really good, so we tried it. I was so disappointed. Our pizza was to be a Chicago deep dish, which it was. When we got the pizza, the center of the pizza was cold. Service was great and staff are friendly. But to have cold pizza when you are expecting hot, was very disappointing.

I wanted a try their Deep Dish Chicago Pizza. I had lived in Tulsa, and they had a deep dish pizza there. We ordered a small Canadian Bacon and Mushroom Pizza. It was good. However , I would suggest that they cook it slower so the middle gets good and hot. It was good.

Came here for my favorite pie (Chicago Deep Dish). It was good, but just not quite 'there,' for lack of a better way of putting it. Cheese was a generous amount, but the toppings had to be searched for. I blame an incredibly busy place, and a take out experience for us. I'm not from the Windy City, but I've had the real deal there (see profile pic). I give them credit for offering this, and they must continue to do so to proliferate the style. Sauce was just right. Crust lends itself well to the pie, but is more traditional pizza dough, with no hint of corn meal. They may do that by design for the folks in Iowa. And again, it was good. I wound up eating four slices, and with a true deep dish, I can barely finish two. But I would have this again visiting the area, because it's not prevalent where I live...

Just like I like it - full of requested ingredients and lots of cheese! The deep dish pizza was my first. I loved it - my husband thought it was too much sauce & cheese. There's no such thing as "too much cheese"! (a bit pricey, but worth the splurge)

This place serves up some of the best Chicago deep dish pizza I've had outside of the Windy City. What's more, they have about 4 different types of crust you can pick from, so pizza fans have lots of options to choose from. They also have an extensive beer menu featuring popular domestic beers and several fantastic British options (not surprising given the theme and decor). The service was attentive, and we throughly enjoyed our meal. If we lived in Coralville/Iowa City, I'd want to come here all the time.

Very cheesy. We had very high expectations as heard people like the deep DISH Chicago type pizza. Yes, it was very cheesy. Waitress did not write down and then double checked our order. We ordered ALL Canadian bacon and on 1/2 sausage and other half tomato. Our pizza arrived at our table ALL 1/2 tomato: other 1/2 minimal canadian bacon and sausage. Yes cheesy and should be for EXPENSIVE PRICE!!! In our penalty box for a long time. Miss our Chicago Giordanos piza.

Was in town to watch the big game!!!! Go HAWKS!!! Stopped here with Cletus and boy oh boy this is a hidden gem. I was very impressed with this lil joint it’s like a blast to the past. That Chicago deep dish pizza is a thing of beauty. Cletus is a very picky young lad so it brought me to tears when he said he enjoyed it!!! We’ll be back :)
