We were here for lunch the weekend of Oktoberfest. The festivities hadn't started yet, so we decided to stop in for lunch. It was busy, but not completely full. We got a table right away on the patio. The patio faced an ally, which was...noisy with delivery trucks and a bit stinky from the trash containers. Food was authentic German, and overall pretty good. The service was pretty bad though. For only ordering lunch, we were there almost 2 hours. It was very slow. We weren't the only people who thought so. We overhead almost every table around us trying to track down their servers to get more drinks, and commenting on the service. When our food came, we had items we ordered that were missing. We told the server, and it took so long to get them. Even though the food was good, I don't think we'll go back.More

Relaxed and nice atmosphere. Service was very friendly and timely. The selection of German beers is impressive and good. Fully recommend Hessen’s.

Number One wife and I arrived at the HH for lunch. There was amble street parking and a city lot across the street. Once inside the familiar trappings of Germany were obvious - lots of German atmosphere. However, the piped-in music was very American. Not...may customers which surprised us. Lots of German beers to choose from and inexpensive wine. Number One ordered a bowl of Beer Cheese soup which she enjoyed. I had a Knockwurst basket which was good. The menu only has a few German "things" but a lot of Germanized American food like hamburgers dressed up with sausage and sauerkraut, etc. Worth a repeat visit.More

A little hard to find as it’s located on 4th St. by the railroad tracks. Once inside you’ll find yourself transported to Germany. There is a very large selection of beers and drinks as well as a pretty robust menu. We all ordered the small...schnitzel. The sides were mashed potatoes and red cabbage. The cabbage was a had a little too much vinagre. The small pork schnitzel was huge and was glad I did not order the large. It was well breaded and tasty with a savory gravy.More

We were traveling through Des Moines on a cross country trip. We were stopping at the capitol building so when I saw there was a German restaurant in town, I knew we had to go. We lived in Germany for several years and are always...looking for good authentic German food. I had high hopes when we walked in. The atmosphere was great. The beer menu was just as big as the food menu. We did not order beer so I can’t speak to that. As soon as our food came out and we looked at it, we knew this was not authentic German food. My husband had the curry wurst with fries. The curry sauce was chunky almost (quite confusing) and my husband said he couldn’t even taste the curry. The wurst was quartered instead of sliced. It almost looked like chili fries. I had the jaegerschnitzel with spaetzel and sauerkraut. The gravy was just a brown gravy with mushrooms and tasted old. The spaetzel was not rolled and was flat. Overall, a memorable experience for us but not in a good way. Maybe their American food is better.More

In the year I've been in Des Moines I've been here twice and both times great food, great atmosphere, and great service! The bartender this morning 1/17/21 was awesome! I definitely recommend the Sauerbraten. The pork was delicious and everything about it was perfect from...the carrots to the subtle sweetness and acidity of the purple cabbage.More

Stopped in with some Friends on a Saturday night. We were able to get a seat on the patio with only a minor wait time. I had the Brisket Mac & Cheese which was very tasty. Let's be honest though, we really just come to...drink the Germany beer. And that never disappoints.More

I really enjoyed this German bierhaus, which had just reopened under Cover 19 guidelines. It does have outdoor and indoor seating, and I chose indoor. I had all the social distancing one could hope for. The restaurant was not too busy as is the case...with virtually all the restaurants in this neighborhood of restaurants. The German beer selection on tap was great with many choices. Bottles were available too but why bother. I loved the bierhaus atmosphere. It was easy to visualize this place really hopping in normal times with diners raising giant steins of beer. The food servings are hugh. I received the large order of pork schnitzel by mistake. The schnitzel had to weigh over a pound, way more than I could ever eat. The red cabbage was very good. I may yet go back to sample their wurst before I leave Des Moines. If my wife was with me she would have ordered the sauerbraten. Meals do not come with bread, which would have been a plus. If we ever get the virus under control, this will be one hopping place with diners hoisting huge steins of beer.More

We were there on a Friday night and there were people there with children. It was around 7pm. Had not gotten to rowdy yet.
