I thought I'd given up finding properly trimmed, tender, non-stringy corned beef so hadn't had any forever. But Marlin at Maccabbees said I wouldn't be disappointed. He was spot on. Paired with the delicious challah rolls, this was a most appreciated lunch visit. This will...be on the radar again for a future visit to DM. Maybe for next year's arts festival? Thank you,Maccabees! I had Corned beef with some red onion and thousand island. There was allot of sandwhich for the price and it tasted very good. Brought some cucumber and onions home and was not disappointed.

Heard good things about this place. But I was very disappointed. I paid $20 for a sandwich and a side of Pasta salad. Both were ok but Nothing special. VERY overrated and overpriced. Won’t be back

You can get Kosher food there. Strictly Kosher, meat, sandwiches, groceries and ritual items. Yet.. for personal reasons, I do not go there. I would expound, but not here. I haven't been there since 2013 / Kosher Corned Beef is expensive so is the sandwich,...but you are getting brisket. Not that stuff you get at HyVee which is some form of butt meat and not good. A good Kosher sandwich, whether straight or pastrami is a blessing of its own. Now you won't be able to get a slice of cheese with it as it would be treif . I long for the style of corned beef from when I was a kid, homemade by Mr. and Mrs. Malin or even from the Nosh when Billy Ohringer made it. Those days are sweet memories. Do try the sandwiches, you won't be disappointed, besides the Rabbi is from New York. Shalom.More

The staff is incredible. They are so welcoming. They go above and beyond for you. I have been looking for a wonderful Jewish Deli. I have found it. The corn beef, the Latkes, the Matzoh ball soup are delicious. This food is meant for your...soul. Yummy!! For a girl who grew up on the east coast and had eaten in Jewish delis her whole life, I was beyond excited to find this deli. A true treasure in the Midwest. Don't miss this place!! You will not be disappointed!!More

A group of us went there today for lunch, and many in the group had been there before. I had not, but wanted to try a new spot. I was not at all disappointed! I chose pastrami on rye, pasta salad, and a drink. It...was just fabulous! I will be sure to back again! ( The rye was so good, I bought a loaf to take home with me! )More

As a kosher food eater it is always surprising to find kosher food in out of the way places, let alone in the middle of Des Moines, Iowa. And yet, there it was l. Matzah balls and corned beef and hot dogs oh my! The...rabbi who runs this account place is friendly and happy to serve. The schnitzel and fries was delicious as was the dairy free cheese cake.More

My wife and I visited there today for lunch. I saw a review on another site and couldn't wait to try it out. I grew up in western NY and there are deli's everywhere. Rabbi Jacobson greeted us with a Shalom, and handed us the...menu. He was busy filling another order, so we looked around. Both of us ordered the Pastrami on Pumpernickel with brown mustard. This is as good as it gets. I would put him up against any New York deli and you can't beat the price or the kindness of the owner.More

Friend and I went because we had a coupon. Counter man discouraged some food as it "would take time to cook" - and then added on the same food to our order for free. Confusing. Overall, food was okay - but he messed up both...of our orders. Service was a little grumpy - seemed annoyed to serve us. I don't live there, but if I did, I wouldn't go again. I'm familiar with kosher delis as an East Coaster and this doesnt live up to the hype. Expensive and not that great. Maybe very little competition?More

After having lived in Hawaii for 10 years, we were desperate for a good deli sandwich on REAL rye bread. We had moved as recent as last month to Iowa to work on the Hillary Campaign but when we realized that MACCABEE's was on a...list of the Top 10 Kosher Deli's and only a few miles away from our new home - we drove directly to the restaurant/deli. What we found was a little piece of heaven on earth! Run by a delightful family, their glass refrigerated display was filled with all kinds of tempting deli delights which we had not seen since living in NY. I wanted to share a pastrami on rye sandwich but my husband refusing to share said we should each get our own sandwich. The sandwich was certainly large enough to split but don't do it! You will want your own! Trust me! We devoured our sandwiches and were delightfully filled but couldn't resist taking a piece of their thickly sliced chocolate babka for later. We entered as Hungry Hawaiians but left gratefully satisfied pledging that we would be back.More

We just moved to Des Moines from Hawaii to work on the Hillary campaign. There were no good deli's in Hawaii and after 10 years there, we were ready to learn how to bake our own rye bread. What a fantastic surprise to find Maccabee's!...REAL rye bread and a pastrami sandwich to die for. We'll be back to sample other deli delights reminiscent of the joys of eating at NY deli's.More

I ordered three sandwiches to go via internet ordering; pastrami on rye, corned beef on rye and turkey on white. If you are looking for a great pastrami sandwich in Des Moines, it's served here. The corned beef had similar remarks by one of my...co-workers. As for the turkey sandwich, well that co-worker is just uninspired. I am looking forward to my return .More

But hey, who knows? Maybe some customers like that grumpiness! (My 4-star rating is definitely for the food, and not the service.) Perhaps they do so much catering that they're not used to having people actually sit down and eat their sandwiches *in* the deli....In addition to a full-service (hesitate to use that phrase) deli, there is a small grocery store with various kosher foods and supplies... Enough to put a smile on my Yiddish mama's face!More

My husband and I have been to Maccabbees Deli a number of times over the years, both to dine in for lunch and take out. My husband regularly reserves a pumpernickle bread to go and relishes every slice at home. The last time we were...there I ordered chopped pickled herring, nova scotia lox and white fish on a plate with sliced sweet, juicy tomatoes and lettuce and cucumber on the side. I had a Dr. Brown's black cherry soda to drink. My husband ordered a "special" combination sandwich that seems to have magic sprinkled in, to watch his face while he was eating it, with a Dr. Brown's cream soda. There is always a warm welcome when you arrive and good conversation to engage in with Rabbi Jacobson, if he is not overly busy while personally preparing everyone's dishes. There is Joyva brand halvah and chocolate covered jellies for dessert. There are several aisles of groceries on the shelves, refrigerated foods in cases and an assortment of kosher wines for purchase, in addition to decorative plates, books coloring books and toys for sale. I highly recommend experiencing Maccabees Deli!More
