My family trips often take me up and down 35 so the ability’s to get fast and fantastic BBQ at Smoky D’s is always on my list. Wide variety of smoked meats and great list of sides makes this my place to stop. A quick...stop at the counter grab your seat and get ready because it doesn’t take long. Choice of additional sauces are strategically placed for your specific taste. Enjoy!More

We were passing through town on our way to Oskaloosa. This was a bucket list spot on the way. We arrived just after 1 on a Wednesday. There was a small line. We ordered two two meat plates with sides My wife had turkey, pulled pork...and veggies and potato salad. I had the burnt ends ,sliced brisket and Mac and cheese and corn. The best meat we had was the brisket burnt ends. They were tender and smoky. The brisket and turkey was sliced very thin and was dry. It was like shaved meat. Wife said the pork was also dry and fatty. The corn was the best side we had. We didn’t try any dessert.More

Service was quick. Ribs were good and tender and had a good flavor. Brisket was tender. We weren’t a fan of the potato salad, it wasn’t what we are used to. It had too much horse radish in it. It’s more of chunk red potatoes,...chunks of purple onion and a mayo, horse radish mixture. Beans were ok and Mac and cheese was good.More

I've been in a number of rib joints. Smokey D's has the Rib joint appeal! Service was fast and friendly I took my first bite, and commented to my wife "See how the meat is pink? This tells me they really smoked it" I proceed...to help my wife gobble down a rack. Yum!More

We were looking for somewhere for a quick bite but not fast food. Smokey’s is right off the highway and, while the parking lot was full, we thought we’d chance it. We got thru ordering at the counter in about 5-min and then our food...arrived at our table in about 10-15 min. I had a one-meat lunch platter which was about $15 with drink. The potato casserole and macaroni & cheese were good!More

Stopped in on the way through Des Moines on Father's Day with party of 5 (adults and kids). Line was long to order, but food arrived quickly and there was a lot of inside setting and staff bussing and directing. Good BBQ for the price...and lots of options. Their in-house kettle chips and ranch dip are a must try.More

This place is right off I 80. Very convenient stop. Reasonably priced barbecue, and large American sized portions. Our apple dumpling for dessert was the size of a softball.

3 couples traveling in a minivan could spell trouble at meal time, but not at Smokey D’s. The restaurant is about as close to the exit as you can get, with plenty of parking and inside seating. The barbecue was above average, with a good...selection of sauces. I lost count of the big screens but we watched MLB, college softball, soccer, hockey, and college baseball. They have clean restrooms and very quick service to make this the perfect interstate meal stop. Oh and there’s a gas station right across the street.More

Big place. Humble seating in multiple rooms. I gotta say, I was dazzled by the MULTIPLE championship trophies from the BIGGEST contests (American Royal, The Jack, Houston, and more) - but although awesome to view, I can't eat the trophies. Competition Q is different from...consumer BBQ usually. The ribs, although delicious and pork-y, had no smoke... not barbeque. The turkey and ham I had were tasty, although serving size on the small end. Sides were tasty.More

You can tell right away that this is BBQ food! The aroma of smokey goodness is prevalent from the time you get out of the car. Ordering is simple, you walk up, place your order, they hand you a table tracking device, you go find...an open table. Minutes later, they locate you from your device and bring your food. Quick and efficient. Soft drinks are self serve, they have Coke products, and there is a full bar as well. From a foodie's perspective, my experience is that some bbq places fail in the beverage arena. Sometimes the lines are not cleaned often enough, and the soda isn't fresh tasting. However, this was not the case here. As with everything else we tasted, the drinks were refreshing and delicious. The food is the real star of the show, of course. We tried the wings and ribs starter. We got our wings with the Asian sauce. There are choices of sauce, bbq, hot and the Asian. Even though i would have gone with one of the ther two, .y wife wanted to try the asian. I can honestly say that i would now recommend the Asian sauce! The ribs were fantastic, as expected, and I could see myself making a meal of just those next time. We also ordered a brisket sandwich and a side of cole slaw. The cole slaw was the only item that didn't wow us. Nothing bad, just not much flavor. The brisket sandwich was on a toasted brioche bun and was another stellar performer. All the meats were tender, juicy and had the wonderful smokey goodness of being prepared with loving, tender care. We drove over 3 hours to get here, and I would not hesitate to name this as a place to go the next time someone asks me, "Where do you want to eat?"!More

Dined at Smokey D's in Des Moines for the 1st time in a VERY long time today, and came away with very positive marks for them. I ordered the Lunch Rack of Ribs (4 bones) which comes with 2 sides. For my sides I chose...Cole Slaw and Baked Beans. Wife had the 2 meat Dinner with 2 sides, and she also had Slaw and Beans. After getting our own fountain drink, we were able to find a table immediately. I then went to the counter where there was a number of bottles of BBQ sauces available to be taken to your table. Kinda neat, and I can speak that this is a post-Covid thing, as for years we have dined here and the sauces have been on your table. Good job, Smokey D's on this! The meals were GREAT. Seriously, I could have taken a couple of the ribs and some of the sides home for later, but figured what the heck. Wife felt the same with her meal. Oh yeah, you get garlic toast with the plates too! So, here ya go Smokey D's ... Cleanliness - 5 stars Food - 5 stars Going the extra mile - 5 stars (this takes into account the sauces available for your table, which are then wiped down after each use.) Hell, even the men's restroom was tidy. And you know how men can be pigs. (pardon the pun in this BBQ place!) Just finishing up the lunch hour on this busy Saturday, and there were just a few drops of water on the vanity between the sinks and the towel dispensers.More

I’m not a big meat-eater but once in a while I gotta have some BBQ. We tried Smokey D’s while visiting Des Moines and it is among the best I’ve ever had. Between the two of us we had ribs, chicken, pork, and brisket with...potato casserole, baked beans, and marinated veggies. The meats were tender, flavorful, and without excess fat, and the sides were equally yummy. Staff was friendly and helpful. I highly recommend and would make a point to stop here if I am in the area again.More
