One of my favorites

We need to stop here when we are in South Bend. It's one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. The ingredients are always fresh, the food arrives piping hot, and the portions are generous. The service is excellent. The menu is huge and the atmosphere is pleasant.

Large Portions-Average Food

Portions are generous and food is average, OK but nothing special. Egg Rolls are really spring rolls. Rice Cake dish is mostly rice cakes. Empress Shrimp should have had shrimp and sauce packed separately. All arrived soggy. Nothing "non standard" on the menu except a very few items on the special menu. OK but I wouldn't go out of my way.

Delicious Chinese food with fresh ingredients

I love going to Ho Ping House in northern part of South Bend. They specialize in traditional & modern Mandarin Chinese food. My sister, bil & I visited Ho Ping after a visit to Notre Dame. Their soups are delicious; I've had egg drop & hot & sour. All of their ingredients, especially the vegetables are always fresh & not overcooked. This time I had the snow peas & vegetables in ginger sauce. My bil had snow peas with chicken in ginger sauce & my sister had shrimp & broccoli in brown sauce. They have a nice, formal atmosphere, a varied menu & reasonable prices. Ho Ping also has another restaurant only a few miles north in Niles, MI. I highly recommend Ho Ping House restaurant

Great service, average food

I stopped in for lunch. As others have noted, their prices for lunch are quite good. I had Generals Tso's chicken with an egg drop soup, an egg role, and rice. The soup was excellent. The egg role was greasy and over cooked. The General Tso's chicken was okay but had too much sauce relative to the chicken and seemed unusually thick. The service was excellent.

Good, fresh, friendly

We were staying nearby at the Inn at St. Mary’s and decided to try this for dinner based on other positive reviews. We were not disappointed. Mongolian Beef, Curry Chicken and Chicken with Peapods were all very good and reasonably priced. The staff was friendly. Would eat here again.

Satisfied our cravings!!

Maybe it was because we were super hungry and both craving egg rolls, but this food hit the spot. We ordered egg rolls, crab rangoon and shrimp toast. All were very good. We had Shrimp with garlic sauce and Beef with garlic sauce and an order of shrimp fried rice. Both dishes said they were spicy, however neither were spice at all, still tasty though. I wish the shrimp fried rice would have had a few more veggies in it. Fast friendly service, we will go back.

Quality and Customer Service way down hill

Terrible customer service. I picked up a carry out order tonight. It was a spicy dish to begin with. It was so spicy we were not able to eat it. Then I looked at the carry out container, it was marked X Spicy. I called the restaurant. They gave me a hard time but agreed to remake the dish. When I picked up the replacement, they were rude. There was no apology for their mistake and I went home to a cold rest of my meal. The dish was their Triple Delight. This is one of their "Chef's Specials" and is pricier than the other dishes on the menu. The shrimp they are now using in this dish is "salad" size shrimp and the scallops were 4 tiny pieces from one scallop. I am very disappointed. This was my number one choice for Asian food in South Bend. Not any more.

Bad food - very unusual for ho ping

I don’t know if they’ve changed their chef or what, but the meal was terrible. We should have sent it back. I brought it home and threw it out, several others ate a bit of it but left most of it at the table. It was embarrassing to have sung the praises of the restaurant and then have such a bad meal.unappetii

This is one of those great old-fashioned kind of Chinese restaurants. Nice selection of food, a full bar and good service. HUGE portions and the food is tasty. I'd go back.

Not at their best today

Facility. Ambience okay. Did not check restrooms. Place seemed too hot. We were uncomfortable. Prices good. Server a little below par. Food. Good choices. Had to get white rice in evening, but we prefer fried rice. Beef broccoli and happy family were tasty. Egg drop soup nice and thick.

Generous portions, excellent service

We have been there a few times while traveling through Indiana. The food is standard Chinese-American, but the service is excellent, the ambience is nice, and the portions are always generous.

Took a chance and was delighted !

Ho Ping House was within walking distance of my hotel. I was by myself and went for an early dinner and was delighted with the restaurant. It has a very pleasant and clean atmosphere and the food was great! I was very happy with my visit and would have gone back if I had the chance during my stay in South Bend...
