For me, the wonderful walk exploring the beautiful and well designed herb/veg /flower gardens of the Estate far outweighed the OK lunch. We were seated in a very nice airy atrium-like section of the restaurant . The lunch menu is limited but patrons should find something they fancy. An attentive and pleasant young lady-waiter, like who assisted us, is always... More

Really enjoyed our dinner here. Probably would have preferred to do lunch to be able to better appreciate the farm and gardens. Menu is original and creative. Green salad was underwhelming but everything else was very tasty. Brilliant house wines.

Wonderful sauce on our kingklip (told it was almonds, tomatoes, paprika, smoked paprika and cayenne) turned this South African standard into haute cuisine. We enjoyed the starter salad, too, baby vegetables, sweet, succulent, tender morsels. Not to be missed.

To dine in a garden from whence the majority of the ingredients are harvested is in itself an experience but the food generally is superb. My gaspacco starter was a delight orally and visually,a soup with deep fried calamari surrounded by a variety of fresh fruit is unique in my experience. The rib of beef was delicious and the garden veg,so... More

We booked the Babel restaurant for lunch following a visit to their Spa. Feeling good from a massage and facial my wife and I were looking forward to visiting this place. Last year it was so busy we couldn't get in. We were not disappointed. I cannot recognise some of the experiences described by other contributors. The service was efficient... More

I had a meeting with the conference/functions lady and viewed the over priced venues on the estate available for private functions. Not impressive, nor were the structure and style of menus. Had dinner in Babel. Small and limited menu. Very nice presentation but am really not convinced on the style of food and content thereof. Not for me.. I think... More

My wife and I visited Babylonstoren this morning as we were booked on the Garden tour (see my separate review) which starts at 10. As we are staying in Cape Town we decided that we would leave early so as to avoid the worst of the traffic and would see if we could get some breakfast when we arrived. Imagine... More

We visited Babel after a wander through the beautiful gardens. When we walked in though, none of the staff acknowledged us. They just made brief eye contact and walked straight past us while we asked if they were still open for lunch. It made us feel unwelcome, even though there weren't many people seated in the restaurant. After asking the... More

Description
Housed in an old cow shed, Babel is a wonderful mix of Cape Dutch architecture with contemporary glass walls that makes for a simple yet edgy environment in which to try our tasty yet often unconventional combinations. We have a farm-to-fork philosophy, which means we like to serve food that is seasonal and that reflects our "pick, clean and serve" approach. Because our menu is guided by what is available in the garden, our food always reflects the season, and so in summer we may serve you a yellow salad of pineapple, gooseberries, granadillas, yellow tomatoes and apricots while in winter a slow-cooked leg of lamb in red wine is more likely. Dessert subscribes to four flavours, namely salty, bitter, sweet and sour. And while our meals are creative, we don't like to tamper unduly with our food. Our meals are always clear in structure, so that fruit and vegetables gathered daily from the garden is often served with its skin on. Helpings are generous and depending on the weather you can take your meal in the glass-enclosed restaurant or under the plane trees in the courtyard.
