SAVE YOUR MONEY! THREE OF US GOT SICK AFTERWARDS. Not having been there in a while, my recent visit to Hana Yori of Japan in Mishawaka left me underwhelmed and somewhat disappointed. The restaurant, once a favorite, now demands urgent refurbishment and enhanced cleaning efforts....Upon entry, a very noticeable, unpleasant odor was evident, and the lack of proper ventilation was immediately apparent. The dining area was uncomfortably smokey, leading to a distressing experience where a couple of us started coughing ( it was very was unavoidable at one point.) Our chef's performance was lackluster, lacking creativity and enthusiasm, which was particularly disheartening as we were celebrating my daughter's birthday. Despite occasional references to the occasion, his engagement was minimal, mostly mumbling and fixating oddly on topics like '5-hour energy drink.' Despite this, I generously tipped him for our party. The culinary mishaps continued with our orders, where one guest received less chicken than expected, and another was served chicken in addition to the requested filet mignon. Furthermore, the cooking pace was sluggish, resulting in a jarring mismatch where our rice and noodles turned cold by the time our meat was adequately cooked. An additional point of contention was the pricing policy on soft drinks - they were charged individually with no option for refills. In an era where most restaurants offer complimentary refills, this felt like a missed opportunity for added customer value. The total bill for four of us amounted to $150, with $40 allocated for tips ($20 to the waitstaff and $20 to the chef) on top of the $150. Reflecting on the overall experience and the cost, it did not equate to good value for money. Alternatives like Outback or Flat Top Grill would have likely offered a more satisfying dining experience at a comparable or lesser cost. In summary, my experience at Hana Yori of Japan was far from what I had hoped for. With a heavy heart, I rate it 1 out of 5 stars and suggest exploring other dining options in the area.More

My favorite place. I go there every chance I get. American food cut up and cooked right in front of you

Really good food and entertaining! Love the yellow sauce! Does anyone know what is in the yellow sauce?

By far my favorite hibachi place. Love the egg yolk sauce. It is definitely a heart attack waiting to happen. You can certainly opt of if it you don’t want it.

Great food and very entertaining! You must sit at the grill to get the full affect. The cooks are very interactive.

Too salty (cook splashed too much soy on everything), vegetables over cooked, and just ordinary (nothing you couldn’t do at home). Cook was friendly though. Explosions of fire at the table were interesting to a point. For a culinary experience, save your money.

I’m being generous. This restaurant fails on even the basic services and products. The dinner was average with tons of butter and salt.

My three sisters and I go out to dinner for each other's birthday. The one celebrating a birthday gets to pick the restaurant and the other 3 split the birthday celebrants bill and treat them. My older sister Toni selected Hana Yori of Japan. We...have been there in the past and it's one of our favorite places to dine. We went on a Sunday; reservations are a must! All three of my sisters opted for the Hibachi steak, while I am a seafood lover and went for the combo, lobster, scallops and shrimp. Everything was fantastic and cooked how we wanted. The Teppan chef was a great performer and a lot of fun! The dinner started with salad and ginger dressing, soup, which is a clear broth with green onion and mushroom and a shrimp appetizer. Dinner includes fried rice, mixed vegetables and the main entree. Overall, I highly recommend Hana Yori if you are in the mood for some great Japanese food and a fun time!!More

I went to this place for my anniversary with my wife today. We informed the hibachi chef that my wife is vegetarian and I’m allergic to shrimp before he started cooking (as soon as he arrived). He evidently didn’t like this, and repeated several times...as he started cooking: ‘We have a vegetarian and one allergic to shrimp.’ Like that’s something so terrible! I’ve been to many Hibachi grills and I’ve never had this problem! This place will never get our business again!More

This place is definitely for a group of seven plus one people. We had a reservation for 3 and waited for about 30 minutes to get 4 more people so that we could be allotted a table. It is a little strange to share a...table with totally unknown people but our chef was fun while he was preparing our Teppanyaki. Shrimp, beef, chicken and vegetables were yummy. The rice was too much in quantity.More

We visited at 6:00 on a Saturday. We had a reservation for 9 people and were seated promptly. The tables appear to be better suited for 8 people - 9 was crowded. Soup and salad were very good but sadly, that was where it ended....—First of all, they don’t offer free refills on soft drinks. Who does that anymore? Why not charge a little more up front and not have to worry about keeping track of every single glass. Crazy! Then the food.... —They put some weird unappetizing glob of tasteless goo on top of the shrimp appetizer. Every person at our table was looking for a way to get rid of it! —The vegetables were OK - just zucchini, onion and mushrooms. No broccoli, no carrots. But.... it was ok. —The meats and seafood were so-so but barely any seasoning at all. Just kind of blah. —Same for the rice..... blah. And it felt like it was either over cooked or cheap rice. It was just kind of crumbly, no distinct grains of rice. —The red ginger sauce was thin and watery. I am never a fan of the mustard sauce so I can’t say if it was good or not. No ‘yum yum’ sauce available. To me, that is what makes the shrimp and chicken so tasty so I really missed not having that. —The exhaust systems did not appear to be working at all. Some of the seats at our table were just shrouded in smoke.... like sitting downwind from a smoky campfire. You could see the smoke rolling over them. Our eyes were burning and we all smelled awful when we got outside. My car still smells. —And lastly..... I have never felt so rushed!! The server brought carry out boxes and stood and watched us eat!! A couple people were still eating and every time they took a bite, the server asked if they were done now. Unacceptable! I know they need to turn tables on a Saturday night but we were not just sitting around gabbing over empty plates - we had barely gotten our food when we started getting the boot. Overall, we were very disappointed. This was a birthday celebration with family from out of town and it was not what we had hoped for. If this is the only Hibachi option in South Bend, I’ll do without. I am usually pretty easy to please but this spot totally missed the mark for me.More
