My daughter and I decided to spend a weekend in Indy and found this hidden gem. We wandered in late one morning and were the first customers of the day. The staff were so friendly and welcoming and patiently helped us figure out the menu....When the food came out I expected to be a little disappointed because it looked sort of plain, but I was so happy when I tasted it. I never thought potatoes could be so flavorful and satisfying, and the Ethiopian bread (injera, or "spongy flat bread") was like nothing I'd ever had before. The only thing I could possibly think of to criticize is that the amount of food seemed a little light for the price, but this was a minor point (and, again, it was a lot more satisfying than it looked at first). If I'm ever in Indy again I will seek this place out.More

The combo for two was great, with 7 different dishes plus njira bread which serves as your plate and eating equipment. Some dishes were spicy, all were flavorful. Price was reasonable for the quantity and quality. Probably a combo for one would have been plenty...for both of us though.More

Haven’t tried Ethiopian food before. We visited this place lunch on a rainy day. The restaurant was completely empty. Ordered a combo meal for two person to share. Food is quite good, a bit pricey though for lunch. Recommended.

We were in Indy in May, and went to Abyssinia again, which is maybe four miles west of the Indianapolis Museum of Art (NewFields). Loved it even more. Great vegetarian combo platter. Every dish was to our taste. Love the family and the service.

Some friends and I went to this restaurant recently for a dining adventure. I think our wallets had the biggest surprise! The coffee service for two was $14+. My husband and I asked to share a combo for one, but we were charged for the...combo for two. One friend also ordered a combo for one and had the same amount of food that we did, only on a smaller plate. My spouse did not want to make an issue of it, so I kept my mouth shut. However, we won’t be back and I would not recommend it. I can officially check eating Ethiopian food off my bucket list. By the way, the location and lack of ambiance were not problems for us, though there were lots of complaints from other reviewers about the neighborhood. It’s in an older part of town that is loaded with strip malls including ethnic restaurants. Locals are used to it.More

Despite the generic strip-mall location, this restaurant offers the most delicious food and excellent service. There are many choices for vegetarians and all the dishes we tasted were really flavorful and plentiful in portions size. We were very satisfied and plan to go back when...next in Indy.More

We had a combo vegetarian platter. Stacked up well compared to Ethiopian food I've had in Washington, Cincinnati, Boston, and San Francisco. Injera was the best ever. Had sort of a buckwheat flavor, seemed more whole grain somehow. We loved the lamb soup. Atmosphere was...informal, relaxed. Service was great. Vegetarian combo platter was $16 for dinner. Wish we lived close by. It's in a strip mall with four other family restaurants and a bakery. This area of 38th Street seems very big in inexpensive or medium-priced interesting restaurants in strip malls. Was easy to find in our first visit to Indy (to the art museum).More

Can't say enough good things about this place. If you're curious, but have doubts about the strip-mall location, get past that and make the trip. This is outstanding food cooked and brought by a friendly, attentive staff who care deeply about what they do. I'm...so glad I came! Don't miss the honeyed wine...so yummy and a nice sweet balance to the spice.More

This was our second visit to the restaurant, although the first visit was about 10 years ago. we found the food to be excellent and the service to be prompt and courteous. My only issue is that the restaurant does not post its beverages on...the menu, making it a challenge to know what is available (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). For fans of the Ethiopian wine, Tej, we were pleased to learn they do have it available! we will return when we are next in Indianapolis.More

What a great little treasure! We are traveling with two 11-year-olds and one six-year-old. My kids love to explore different types of ethnic foods. This place was very welcoming and very helpful without ordering. We chose this restaurant due to a Groupon however we will...definitely be back! Great service and wonderful food.More

I came here with a coupon which made it worth taking the risk. I like Ethiopian food. While I waited for the waitress, several people came in to purchase huge packets of bread - it was the best part of the meal that I ordered....I had two entres (beef and kale combo and red lentils) and two small sides. The meat was tough but everything else was satisfactory. My main thought was that the menu prices were too expensive for lunch. It's the same menu for dinner. The setting is in a strip mall that has seen better days - and I probably wouldn't go there for dinner. This is a genuine family-run place, and I hope it makes it.More

What a great find! I have had Ethiopian food before in Chicago and Michigan suburbs, this was the BEST. When they say spicy, they mean it! Delicious and hearty. We had a veg combo plate and some chicken. Everything was well cooked and steaming hot...(I have been to some places in Michigan where some of the dishes - mostly lentils - were served cold, and I hated it). I actually asked the lady and she shared that none of the authentic Ethiopian foods are served cold! There is also a small store next door to buy grains and Ethiopian merchandise.More

Rated Super authentic eats. The curry was wonderful, lots of variety, they kept the injera coming, and the honeyed wine went down REALLY easy. Staff was friendly, but not very speedy or efficient.

the place doesn't look all that great but when they seat you in that special seating with the cowhide chairs and the circle table that's made for sharing you definitely get excited and the fresh coffee is roasted when you order it and the coffee...ritual is just relaxing and everything tastes delicious. Any meat you ordered :lamb or beef or chicken was tender and savory! Vegetarian options are amazing ,too! I definitely recommend going there with friends or loved oneMore
