Good drinks, Vegan and Gluten Free friendly

Lime Margarita was perfect, not watered down and too sweet. Vegetarian fajitas were very good and vegan/gluten free friendly (removed the sour cream and asked for corn tortillas). Guacamole made table-side was delicious; small was a perfect size for 2 people.

Excellent Mexican food in Peru

We stopped on our way to Rockford, looking for a good non-fast food restaurant. Jalapeños was a little further off the interstate then we prefer but once we found it, we noticed it’s an easy on/off at the next exit. The chips/salsa were delicious. We’re used to lighter chips and a milder salsa; these were heavier chips and more of a pico de gallo - it had nice zip and flavor! We had the tacos, a chicken quesadilla and a beef enchilada. Not our first rodeo for any of those dishes. The meat was very flavorful and portions were generous. Interestingly the tacos came with only the meat in the shell; the lettuce and cheese were on the side for you to add yourself. No problemo! The rice and refried beans we did not like as well; actually prefer the flavor of a Mexican restaurant in our hometown (Bloomington). That said, they were also very flavorful and the beans texture seemed more authentic, so to speak. Not nearly as creamy as we’re used to but again, not bad just different. A great place with FAST service (a plus as we were on a timetable). Next time we’re in LaSalle/Peru and want to have dinner, Jalapeños will definitely be our top choice.

One of the better restaurants in the area

Peru has plenty of fast food and franchise restaurants which I would rate as average or below average. The area around Jalapeños is loaded with the usual fast food places. We visited Jalapeños twice and each time I would rate it above average, especially compare to its competition. I would eat here again.

My wife and I just ate here

My wife and I just ate here and we won’t ever come back. We had tasteless chips along with our blah salsa. Most importantly, our waiter charged me for an extra margarita after asking him for a standard lime on the rocks because the mango margarita I requested for before was super sweet and didn’t like it. I expected, like at most restaurants, that he would accommodate me, but that didn’t happen. I mentioned it to the cashier but to no avail. What a mistake and waste of my money! Miguel

A hidden jem but worth finding!!

Authentic Mexican dishes...delicious, too. Taco salad with chicken and Steak Vallarta was great. Chips with a spicy salsa was too "hot" for some in our group. Wait on Thursday night 6pm was about 10 minutes. Busy place plenty of parking. Probably a mad house on Friday & Saturday.

Like an old friend.

You know how you miss someone but you don’t know that you missed them that much until you either run into them at the Walmart or intentionally drive to see them. You remember after 20 minutes being together it seems like you have never been apart. Thats Jalapeños. Even before the pandemic, it had been awhile since we had been there. And considering the pandemic we are now talking about 3-1/2 years since our last visit. With all the bad food experiences we have encountered around the country since restaurants have started to reopen, my wife and I were prepared for a mediocre reunion if not a bad one. Boy, were we surprised. The food was still top notch and the margaritas rocked. The staff was every bit as pleasant as we had remembered and maybe, but I can’t be certain, it was still the same old staff. And like an old fried, Jalapeños welcomed us back with open arms.

Wow, we were here last year about the same time and it is still great! DarvinV was our waiter and he was Johnny on the spot for us. Chips and salsa, mucho grande cervesas, out food we ordered, absolutely wonderful. I ordered the Chicken Chilango Burrito and my wife ordered the Special Rice with Chicken. Both dishes were hot(temperature wise). Very tasty and big enough portions to fill me up and my wife’s extra we boxed up for tomorrow. They were very busy and that says people are happy with the service and food. I know we were. Thanks Jalapeños for another great meal! We will be back next Feb. on our way to Florida.

The Menu was Longer than some Novellas.

We were on the last leg of our vacation and knew we were coming home to an empty fridge. So, in preparation of a long night ahead (of driving and unpacking the car), we stopped at Jalapenos for dinner. The menu was enormous. Seriously. If you can't find SOMETHING of interest, then you are not trying. They had every choice imaginable and then some. It's a busy (I believe chain) place that has what you might expect in the way of decent Mexican food. There was a sense of restrained chaos, but the staff made it work. Food was quick to come out and we did NOT leave hungry. The quality was good - a solid 7 out of ten. It's a good place to take the kids. A decent recommend.

Best Mexican food

Best Mexican food I’ve ever eaten. Definitely eat here when you’re in Peru. I had a tostado, chicken burrito, rice and beans and loved it all. My husband had fajitas and my father had a chicken burrito. We enjoyed the margaritas too. We will go back.

A visit of convenience, but pleasantly surprised.

We were staying at the Fairfield Marriott next door, so it was very convenient. We enjoyed our meal, my husband had Beef Fajitas and I had the build you own with a Quesadilla and super Taco. I also enjoyed a small regular Margarita. Staff were wearing masks and there was plexiglass between booths. Large menu to choose from.

I am always suspicious when I see the top rated restaurant in a town a Mexican restaurant. Don’t be fooled by the entrance way. What is inside is outstanding food and very good service!! Burrito Califoriana and Zucchini Chicken were both delicious!!

Great food and great service

My only words are WOW! Wonderful food and service. Ramiro was our waiter and he was fabulous. He said the food choices we made are great and they absolutely were. Beers were extremely reasonably priced, so since we were staying at the Hampton next door what the heck have 2. Thanks Ramiro, we enjoyed your service and recommendations.

My mom and I have loved Jalapeños for like 10 years! The food is delicious and the service is awesome. They now have a drive-up window so you don't have to go in if you don't want to. I also noticed an outdoor tent thing so that helps during the pandemic. Get the homemade guacamole. Sooooo good.

This place is legit. They even have Mexican coca-cola!!! A menu to meet all palates—AND guacamole made at the table !! What more could you want.
