Diver Down in Golconda, Illinois, like the Red Onion in nearby Equality, both hard by the Ohio River, are out-of-the-way restaurants that you don't expect to find in out-of-the-way places, like striking gold in Lincoln Park. Located at 219 East Main Street in this popular...summer recreational community, it is open from 4 to midnight Tuesday through Friday, noon to midnight on Saturday and noon to 10 on Sunday. Its all-you-can-eat fried catfish dinner on Friday night is a must. My wife and I started with the Nacho Supreme, fresh corn tortilla chips topped with seasoned beef, nacho cheese, black olives, jalapenos, salsa and sour cream. It's not our usual fare but when dining with the locals, you eat like the locals, right? And it was delicious. We also shared a Caesar salad with grilled chicken, romaine lettuce, shredded parmesan cheese, seasoned croutons and creamy Caesar dressing. For an entree, my wife chose the coconut shrimp dinner, eight butterfly shrimp with pina colada sauce, baked potato and cole slaw. I opted for the ribeye steak dinner with baked potato, sauteed onions, mushrooms and bleu cheese. Sorry, as often as we have traveled and dined in the Deep South, from southern Illinois to Mississippi to Louisiana, we have never been able to accumulate a liking for catfish. I had it once, at a restaurant in Donaldsonville, Louisiana, and I must admit I enjoyed my first and only experience. But I've never asked for seconds.More

We were there on a Wednesday night. When we got there, I think there were less than 10 other people in the restaurant, but there appeared to only be one waitress taking orders and serving food in the restaurant and bar area. It was an...hour between the time we ordered and the time we got our food. The food was great and the prices were acceptable, but we didn't plan on being there for almost two hours.More

The Diver Down is a rare find in Golconda. For years it was either the Dari Bar at the lower end of dining or the upscale Riverview Inn. The double D has very good food, excellent service, and is a clean family restaurant. It does...have a bar side but saw no problems with any patrons. Those who were partaking were also eating as well. The onion rings were great as was the grilled chicken salad and the Black and Blue salad. The place was very busy with one unexpected group of 20 but the food was coming out efficiently and the servers were hustling with a smile. My wife and I were well pleased and will certainly return when in the area.More

Kid and I were getting hungry at the tail end of a hiking adventure at nearby Garden of the Gods. Saw the Diver Down and decided to give it a try. We sat outside at their temporary tables set up in the parking spaces along...the main street in town. The waitress was prompt and got our food out to us quickly. My onion rings and fried okra were good and my son's chicken strips and fries were good too. Would likely eat there again when back to the area.More

We visited during the Coronavirus. Measures were evident to be clean and safe. Nothing fancy, but comfortable. This is a small town restaurant with great service and delicious food. We were glad we ate here rather than looking for another eatery outside of this small...town. We enjoy supporting the local businesses.More

We were interested in dinner, but didn't even get our beers before we saw the huge picture of the current occupant of the White House and other such memorabilia. We decided to eat elsewhere.

Before be decided on this place, our bed and breakfast told us there would be a little wait if we went to Dover down. We were going to grab a quick bite to eat we were seated immediately and ordered the all you can eat...fish special. We watched several tables of people get tired of waiting and walk out. At 45 minutes the waitress told us they were busy and out food would be right out. After another 30 minutes with no food, we walked out. Won’t ever go back.More

Waited one hour, fifteen minutes for a hamburger and steak sandwich. No real apology or reason given. Food was good when it arrived. To be fair this could be an exception rather than the rule. Only visited one time.

In a sleepy town in southern Illinois, this was the last place I expected to find! With a dining area, bar area, pool table, and a vibe like I'd just found myself in a family-friendly bar in the Florida Keys. The prices were low, and...the food quality fresh and good.More
