Tried to order but was told cash only or order online…. So after trying to order online and deciding not to share ALL my personal data just to get fast food, I paid cash. Ordered the 4 ounce patty melt and it was more like...a grilled cheese sandwich with a few grilled onions and and very thin slice of beef……. Never had one like this and don’t want to again. My pal had a bacon cheeseburger and enjoyed it. My regular fries were fine but any ‘upgrade’ doubles the price. It’d be nice to know they double the portion too. My pal got the garlic fries and was happy but they’d have been enough for both of us. Prices are high for what you get…. The place is a dump and floor filthy. Hard to believe the pass inspections…..More

I had heard this was a must try so I made a point to when I was in the area. We got a spicy sconnie and a single and some buffalo fries. The burgers were good, but not great. The fries were very good.

Whenever the conversation turns to "the best burgers in Chicago," somebody always mentions Edzo's Burger Shop in north suburban Evanston. Edzo's was recommended to us by a former newspaper colleague who lives in Evanston. We've never been disappointed. Owner/chef Eddie Lakin offers a creative menu...-- what makes a hamburger different from another hamburger? -- that features char-broiled burgers, classic Vienna beef hot dogs, chili dogs, Maxwell-style Polish sandwiches, Sheboygan brats, patty melts and grilled chicken sandwiches. Plus the best tasting fresh-cut fries with sea salt that you've ever had with ketchup. Located at 1571 Sherman Avenue, between Grove and Davis, Edzo's is open from 11 to 8 Tuesday through Saturday and 11 to 4 on Sunday. My recommendations? The BBQ bacon cheddar burger, 4 ounces of ground beef topped with Merkt's cheddar/bacon spread, sliced cheddar, two strips of bacon, BBQ sauce and onion strings. The eight-ounce char burger with onion, lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup, mustard and relish. My wife prefers the eight-ounce patty melt on marble rye with American cheese and grilled onions and the grilled chicken sandwich with boneless, skinless chicken breast marinated in Italian seasonings, then char-grilled and topped with lettuce, tomato and mayo on a whole wheat bun. Wash it all down with a chocolate milk shake.More

Ran out of hamburger buns mid day. Unacceptable! Been there when it was pretty good. Not this time. Fries were all burnt. I wouldn’t have served them.

Ordered single burgers and fries for dinner for family. All wanted something we hadn't eaten in a while. Everything was delicious!! Online ordering was a breeze, but didn't realize that online ordering ends at 7:30pm! I logged in at 7:15pm so I just made it...in time!More

I'm not sure what I expected but the casual somewhat run down burger place we entered wasn't it. Yet, we were looking forward to it so we placed our order at the counter and found a table to sit at. The place is rough around...the edges and anything but fancy, even shy of casual. We ordered a maple malt to split. It was so-so. Not strong maple or malt flavor. There were chunks in it that made me wonder if it hadn't been blended enough and maybe the malt mix had clumped up. I ordered chili fries thinking that could be a meal, but the chili was dismal and kind of sparse. More saucy than chili. My daughter ordered the old fries which are supposed to be extra done. They didn't look or taste different than our other fries. We also had garlic fries and those were delish. Burger was ok but not phenomenal. Overall it's not cheap and for the atmosphere, it was a little mis-matched. Maybe if you know what to order (garlic fries) or you get it to go it would be better. Lastly, it was cold in there. Each time the door opened a blast of air followed it. It could be a better setup than what it is.More

Disgusting floors.... no ambiance or feel other than cheap, except it’s not inexpensive. Looks like it’s been here unchanged for fifty years, but it’s only ten years old. It has lousy seating and tables and every time the door opened an ice cold wind came...through, despite moving away from the door. It was warm last week when I was here so I can only imagine it here on a cold day Fries are above average and well cooked, but my 8 ounce char burger was well done, not medium. It had a nice char but balled up.... topping was a huge leaf of lettuce, tasteless tomato, slab of raw onion and some ketchup and mustard.... little care shown in the presentation. My buddy’s grilled double with grilled onions was good but he refused to pop the extra couple bucks for cheese and even gmore for bacon..... table service usually comes with these prices. Food a three, service two, value two, restaurant one, cleanliness zero..... and you get to pay for parking! As others have noted, it’s a wonder they can pass a heath inspection. Will not return!More

Are the burgers at Edzo's Burger Shop in Evanston, Illinois, as good as advertised? Do they rank No. 1 in Chicago, as some critics claim? Do they rank among the top 100 in the United States? And how about those hot dogs? Or may you'd...prefer the Maxwell-style Polish. Or the eight-ounce patty melt. Whatever your taste, Edzo's is sure to have something to satisfy. Located at 1571 Sherman Avenue in Chicago's north suburb, south of Davis Street, it is an old-school, no frills burger joint that specializes in burgers, hot dogs, fries and shakes, especially burgers with two four-ounce grilled patties and an eight-ounce char version. Open from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, Edzo's lives up to its "one of the nation's best burgers" billing. Over the years, my wife and I have settled on a few favorites. Like the BBQ bacon cheddar burger, with a four-ounce ground beef patty, Merkt's cheddar bacon spread, sliced cheddar cheese, two strips of bacon, BBQ sauce and onion strips. Crazy fries topped with all-beef chili, Merkt's cheddar cheese and chopped onions. And the Classic Chicago Dog, a Vienna all-beef hot dog in a poppyseed bun with tomato, mustard, relish and pickles. I also enjoy the eight-ounce patty melt on marble rye with American cheese and grilled onions. Wash it all down with a chocolate milk shake.More

I stopped here for lunch on my to Milwaukee from Chicago, because I heard they served fresh-cut fries. I love fresh-cut fries. The fries were cooked fine, and had a nice amount of salt. My complaint is that I had a lot of small bits...of fries. Not very many full length pieces. Which tells me these have been frozen and are broken pieces, not fresh-cut, or they came from little baby potatoes (see my picture). Sorry, but I was very disappointed. Now I did see that they make their own ground beef and they form the patties after you order your burger. They also make old-fashioned milkshakes, and give you both the milkshake in the cup, and the metal container they made it in. When I’m in the area again I may try the milkshakes, because I am an ice cream/milkshake aficionado.More

Having the Chicago Tribune rate you #1 for your Burgers and then your fries means you are breathing rarefied air.....and being in a suburbs and not downtown I had to give it a go.....I ordered the specific burger the Tribune mentioned to compare and it...was stupendous! The meat was juicy & fresh the accouterments on the burger complimented the overall taste rather than overpower the burger itself......it quite possibly was the best burger I have ever had...and I am an old bastard and have been around.....the fries were also as advertised my only complaint was that I had more bits & pieces in the container than I did full size fries......but they were mighty tasty none the less. One other point......the restaurant a little worn around the edges....More

Numerous hamburgers in Evanston are better! The owner gives patter about fresh ground chuck...well cooking it correctly is more important than he thinks. ALSO the bun is part of the program. The Edzo bun is completely unsophisticated!!!!

The fries were beyond great especially the buffalo ones but our char burgers were either raw inside or over cooked. The kiddos griddled burgers were better cooked. Whole place is sticky and needs a good scrubbing and paint. The hallway to the shared bathrooms is...a mess. Wonder how they passed a recent inspection!More
