I don't consider Russell's chow to be special. Honestly? It's comparable to what you'd find at other neighborhood carryout joints, which is to say okay or average. So, what does Russell's have that the other joints don't? History, nostalgia, local flavor, and patina. An Elmwood Park fixture since 1930, this place has remained remarkably unchanged through the decades. To generations... More

This is an old-time barbecue place that I've gone to for years. I especially like the original pork sandwich, which I drown in their delicious barbecue sauce. My husband likes the brisket sandwich. I can't give a higher rating, though, because the place feels too run down (which is not the same thing as old). The women's restroom really needs... More

The quality of the ribs has gotten better and their smoked brisket is great. Old fashioned dinning room, good place to take the kids

My Mom and Dad took me to Russell's since 1941. Don't remember it then, but I do remember it now. When we lived in the area we would be there at least once a month. We have been away from the Chicago area since 2003. When ever we in the area, this is a MUST stop. The only thing that... More

Stopped by Russell's Barbecue on a return trip from Chicago. I have been visiting this place for the last 50 years. Back in the last 60's and early 70's Russell's had what was the closest to the BBQ style that we refer to today. Essentially, their bbq pork sandwich was a sliced pork or chopped pork with their signature sauce.... More

I am 55 and been eating here most of my life. I stopped on hot afternoon for a Beef and the best corn on the cob around. Unfortunately for me this time, I bit into my beef was burned badly. The Beef was sizzling hot.

About a block North of North Ave (on Thatcher) it's easy to miss if you don't know it's there, and traffic is moving along -- but it's hard to miss their large smokestack with their name reading down the side. It's definitely not high class, but it's good basic BBQ at a fair price. Plenty of seating inside (although a... More

Didnt even know this place existed till I was craving BBQ and too lazy to make any. So I googled. Reviews said it was pretty good. Stopped in on a weekday afternoon-it was hot outside so the cold burst of air when you first walk in was very comforting. That was it tho-the place was so warm it was uncomfortable.... More

My parents would bring my brother and I here after a day at Kiddy Land and now I bring my kids here after we go to the Zoo. The price is a little high, but the BBQ beef is totally worth it. Their BBQ sauce is also very good, sweet and tangy. It is cheaper to buy a BBQ beef... More

This place has been around since I can remember. Still looks the same inside too. The beef sandwich obviously isn't a Johnnie's beef, but they are good in their own way. First off, they're a bit different than your average beef sandwich because they're served on a bun. Their pork sandwiches are good too! What makes them so good is... More
