You can't go wrong here. I've never had a bad meal. I highly recommend starting your meal off with their crab cakes. They are the best I've ever eaten. The staff are friendly and the decor is so quaint. Both make you feel at home.

Malts and shakes can't be beat...salads are great...sandwiches are lovely...entrees are creative. My husband loves their trout.

I have heard about Al's Cafe for years. I finally experienced the hidden jem in downtown Elgin. The decor, food and drinks were everything I had read about. An excellent lunch experience.

My wife has eaten here for about 20 years, and swears by it. She normally likes the average stuff they serve, like the lunch sandwiches, and of course, the delicious homemade shakes. I recently went here with my brother-in-law for dinner, and decided not to play around with the regular fare. No, I went upscale and got a steak/potato/vegetable combo... More

Very cute decor. Comfortable ample seating upstairs smaller on first floor. Anything you get is fresh made, great ingredients perfect portions. Love my tuna dill on wheat bread, get it toasted(my preference) but never ever forget a shake or malt. I prefer malt, chocolate of course. Thick rich creamy refreshing no matter what flavor you choose. Even though you will... More

The food at Al's Cafe & Creamery is fantastic! Made with care, always delicious and presentation is right on! And, whether you are there for lunch or dinner, you must have a malt! Secret recipe that has probably been around for at least 8 decades and it does not disappoint. You don't want to miss this gem in downtown Elgin,... More

The building is one reason to stop here - so quaint. In warmer months they have tables outside in a courtyard. The food is wonderful, and they are known for their fabulous shakes and malts! Can't go wrong here.

Al's Cafe in downtown Elgin is a step back in to time....in a good way. Located on a quaint corner of the city just a short walk to Festval Park, it is a perfect vintage spot with great food and outstanding old fashioned malts and ice cream. They are probably best known for their thick and creamy malts served in... More

This is a great restaurant right in downtown Elgin. The owner/chef went above and beyond to serve me a dish that met my dietary needs. The presentation was beautiful and tasted wonderful. My husband had the breaded pork tenderloin with mushroom sauce and said it was one of the best he has had.

Al's has been a mainstay of Elgin for many years. It's a great place to eat lunch or dinner. I went with friends to have dinner before we went to a play. While most famous for the creamery items, the main course meals are delicious. You want to choose carefully so you can eat your meal & still have room... More
