At last -- we could finally shop inside the store -- and we went totally doughnut-crazy. Our eyes were WAY bigger than our stomachs. And that's how I found out how well all the doughnuts freeze -- especially the fancy doughnuts (coffee rolls, cinnamon buns,...apple fritters, sugar and cinnamon twists). I froze them individually on trays, and then bagged them in zipper freezer bags, pressing out as much air as possible. When we wanted one to eat, we simply microwaved it for a few seconds. They tasted freshly made when stored this way. I've been told they will keep for two months, but we raided the freezer much sooner than that. Although they didn't start it, there's a clear winner in the Donut Wars. And that winner is Country Donuts of Crystal Lake, IL. There's not much that gets The Amish Texter out of his Huntley farmhouse and into his buggy on a Sunday night, but...a donut run to this superior establishment does it. Their donuts are amazing. The Custard and the Vanilla filled donuts are heavenly. Do not leave without having a Chocolate donut (or maybe more) Huge selection.
I read about the best donuts in each state and Country Donuts was listed for Illinois so I just had to go there. I was SO happy I did. I've had cider donuts before but the one I had at Country Donuts was so light,...fluffy and tasty it beats all the others hands-down. If I had visited on a weekend, I would have tried the cinnamon rolls but then I would not know how good the cider donuts are - that would have been a loss. I called my order in on the phone and a very nice, pleasant young lady brought out my donut and coffee. I perfect start to my day. When I get back to Crystal Lake, I will definitely make a stop at Country Donuts.More
Utilize the drive-thru or take advantage of the curbside delivery service -- 24 hours a day. You will not be allowed inside as long as the COVID restrictions are in place, so call ahead. If you're already in the car when the Country Donut snack...attack occurs -- and you don't already have them on speed dial -- just drive on over. Available only Friday - Sunday, the Country Donuts cinnamon bun is a masterpiece. The roll itself is exquisitely soft, and the whole thing melts in your mouth. It's so good, I've had to set rules to limit my visits. Except perhaps if you're a diabetic,...this is one pleasure you must not deny yourself.More
We use to LOVE their donuts, and I keep hoping that they will return to their previous standards. Sadly, my last couple of visits to the Crystal Lake location, the donuts had a lingering oily after taste. I truly hope that they rectify this issue!
This is the best place in town to get doughnuts, you can actually watch them make them through the window! They are fresh and so yummy! It’s a must stop!
You really can't go wrong with a fresh donut! You can watch the donuts being made while you wait in line. There are plenty of options to choose from and you can grab coffee or a latte as well. The apple cider donuts are a...must-try in the fall. You can't go wrong with a honey dip or an old fashioned. They offer both cake and yeast donuts, but if donuts aren't your thing, they have muffins and danishes as well. Parking can be tricky on weekends or you can use the drive through. Be prepared to wait a few minutes at peak times. Bonus: they are open 24 hours, for those of us who get those late night donut cravings.More
This is your old-fashioned donut place that puts all others to shame. Always freshwith a wide selection, although I would love a maple flavor. Pancki Day needs ordering ahead of time.
