Star of Siam Restaurant has been here for ages and is a well known Thai food standby by both locals and area employers (catering). We started with Gyo Tod (fried wontons) which were unique as you usually don’t see shrimp wontons on Thai menus! They were served with in-house made plum sauce and were generously filled. Very good delicious starter to dinner. We ordered Pad Ruam Mit (mixed vegetables) with chicken although you can have tofu or other meat choices. Also, Panang Nue (beef curry) which didn’t disappoint. Huge amount of beef in the rich flavorful curry! Both dishes offered generous amounts of tender meat and vibrant flavors. Notables: 1. If you like your dish spicy hot then you need to tell the server or you’ll get your dish served flat tasting (in my opinion). 2. Jasmin rice is extra and doesn’t come with your meal but the food was really good quality and generously portioned so it wasn’t a big deal. Restaurant was clean, service was excellent and friendly. Tables and booths are very roomy.

Lovely unpretentious Thai restaurant, great tasting dishes, fast service and ever so helpful. We enjoyed our meal so much we ordered a delivery from them (not thru a third party) to out hotel a few nights after we first went there. Delivery was only $4. (Order directly thru their website). Once again the food was great. Portion sizes were huge, so maybe think of sharing one dish between two. Special call-out for the sticky rice and banana dessert - enough for two, but being a greedy pig I ate both portions! Lastly and importantly great value for money. If I’m ever back in Chicago I’ll definitely return.

We found this place near our downtown hotel. An extensive menu and large portions. Not too expensive. The owner explained the menu to us and our waitress was very friendly and cooperative. The items we ordered were quite good and quickly served. Not too crowded since we were there at an odd hour but I suspect business is good for this establishment. We would recommend.

We booked our table on their website for 8:45pm, when we arrived the waitress informed us to be quick in ordering because the kitchen was already closing. Despite the fact that there was half of the restaurant empty, when asked to be put in a table other than the one in front of the kitchen the same waitress simply told us no. At the end of dinner she simply brought us the bill saying that we had to pay, when there were still at least 5 tables around us where customers were still eating. Overall, therefore, it was an unpleasant experience in an unkempt establishment (pics show just half of it) with food that did not impress me.

A cozy little eatery nestled in an older building on Illinois just off State in Chicago. Perfect setting for a quiet dining experience. A gracious and attentive staff member was eager to navigate us through the menu and explain different options. Appetizers and entrees were flavored and cooked wonderfully . We totally enjoyed everything we ordered! The owner even stopped by to wish us happy holidays and make sure everything was to our liking! I would definitely recommend this gem for a very special dining experience 😊

Restaurant has simple interiors that gives you the sense of being served home cooked Thai food. My impression did not fail. Food was delicious. Loved the Pla Sam Rose - deep fried red snapper with three flavored sauce, Panang chicken curry and Tom Yum shrimp soup.

Just wanted to share our experience here. Food was tasty (although not as spicy as one might expect). The people in the restaurant were very friendly. The owner / head chef offered us a sampler of some chicken that was already prepared. It was delicious as well. And the portions were extremely generous. The bill was reasonable for Chicago dining. All in all we were very happy stopping here. I think you will be as well.

Booked this restaurant based on previous reviews. I have to say, our experience had more in common with the poorer reviews. The food whilst large in quantity lacked taste, the Pad Thai was not good at all. The service also wasn't what was expected, it was though Waitress wanted us out of there a.s.a.p. Paying the bill was a palaver. The Credit Card reader couldn't get a signal, then didn't recognise my card details when inserted leading to the Cashier entering all the details manually. Good grief!!

We were a group of 13 ladies. We had resevations at 7pm on a Friday. We were seated around 7:20ish. The manager came out to greet us. He stated that he would start us out with 3 dishes of papaya salad and 3 dishes of chicken, since they were shirt staffed that night, and then we could order off the menu. We were thrilled. We thought that was great customer service to give us complementary food. We were wrong. Next, the waitress came out and gave us a piece of paper and pen. She asked that we take our own orders, to help her out, since she was so busy. We were happy to comply. BIG mistake. When the food started coming out, we were getting the wrong orders, left and right. My sister ordered some kind of chicken (it was a Thai name that i can't remember). A waiter came out and kept asking whi orderd the basil chicken. We kept telling him no one did. He asked our waitress who pointed to my sister. When she said she ordered a dish by a different name, the waitress explained that they were the same dish, just different names. How the heck were we suppose to know that? But, that pretty much set the tone for the rest of the food we ordered. We just kept getting the wrong food. And we kept getting yelled at for not knowing what we ordered, even though the wait staff wouldn't use the correct names for th dishes. To top it off, we were told we had to pay for the papaya salad and chicken. That it was a misunderstanding. That really upset my group. The only good thing was our poor waitress who was so overwhelmed, but, very nice and professional. And the food was very good. But, everyone in my group agreed that we would never return.

We ordered take out at the star of Siam. One order was shrimp wrapped in rice paper and then deep fried. The shrimp wasn't almost non-existent. We ordered pad Thai and what came was a takeout bowl of gelatinous noodles, all stuck together and six overcooked shrimp. There was no sauce in with the noodles. Frankly it was revolting and impossible to serve.

Love the big, open windows along Illinois. I sat here, enjoying the breeze, the slight sounds of the city, and some very good food. I had the deep-friend mini vegetable egg rolls. They came out quickly; Perfectly done. They had a slight hint of oil, and the veggies inside were crisp-tender. Can’t say they were the best I’ve had (because my memory isn’t that good), but they ranked right up there. I then moved on to a big bowl of Tom Kha Kai soup. My memory is fine here. It’s the best I’ve ever had … and I’ve spent many weeks in Thailand. It was the perfect balance of tang, coconut (not too heavy in the broth), gentle herbs and roots, and spice. I’d kill for their recipe. I finished it off with the Thai banana in sticky rice. Really good. Waaay too much for one though. It came with three banana-rice ‘packets’ individually wrapped in banana leaves. I would have been good with just one…but I ate all three because they were good. I’ll define come back if I’m ever in the neighborhood.

While visiting Chicago a while back, we stopped and had some Thai at the Star of Siam. It was delicious them and it was delicious again for our second visit. The atmosphere is warm and pleasant. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We both had the Pad Thai with chicken, the same thing we had the first time. It’s delicious. The flavor has a slight sweetness to it and everything seems very fresh. The dish will run you just under $11 and you will be full. We will definitely go again the next time we are in Chicago.

We were staying nearby and love Thai food and ordered take out. My wife ordered churchee salmon and loved it but she could not finish the large portion. We shared edamame and vegetable fried rice, again large portions, which were very good. I also ordered Tom Koa soup with chicken, which was very good, but very large and I could not finish it-it would satisfy two people. The staff was very friendly. I recommend this place but understand the meals are enough for two to share. We could not even save the leftovers for the next day as I usually do as we were visiting and staying at a hotel.

After reading the menu from the sidewalk on a dreary day, the fairly lengthy soup options initially drew us in. The restaurant is casual and attractive and the service attentive. Two of us shared a large bowl of chicken rice soup that would have easily served 4. It smelled and tasted delicious, topped with cilantro and green onions. We moved on to chicken and vegetable gyoza that was pretty good. The least impressive item was the tempura, with batter so thick that some of it was still raw inside. I’d definitely go back, but probably stick to soup and try an entree.

Spring rolls Vietnamese style made with thick cheap lettuce and stuffed with mystery meat which felt like rubber. Beef penang curry was the absolute worst I ever had. Tasteless with tough meat. Had to ask for sauce to add flavor. Place was empty but we kept having to get up to get their attention. Hadn't been in years. Total deterioration.
