It was a last minute idea from our concierge. Good location. Small brownstone house. We were seated upstairs in a room with only a small number of tables. Great selection of true Italian dishes. Robbie, our waiter, made some well thought food recommendations and the wine, Amarone Tedesci 2011, was a perfect fit. After a really nice dinner and a... More

Atmosphere says quaint Italian. Located in a small old brownstone building sets this quiet restaurant. Service was very attentive, the food was average. I had the ravioli with an olive oil, garlic and walnut sauce, it needed more herbs or more flavor for me. My husband had the carbonara and was also disappointed.

My husband and I dined here tonight on the recommendation of our concierge. Sadly enough we were disappointed by the food. The server tried to introduce the special as bouillabaisse but when I asked him to describe it he admitted it was actually chioppino but he didn't think the clientele would know what that was. And although the chioppino was... More

From start to finish this neighborhood Gem did not disappoint. My dining companion and I made a special trip from Michigan to dine at Merlo on Maple to celebrate a Big Birthday. We began our dining experience with two Antipasti's, Beef Tenderloin Carpaccio and a Baby buffalo mozzarella with cherry tomatoes and asparagus spears, both were amazing!! What followed next... Made reservations for 2 on the advice of our hotel cocierge. We were seated on the lower level when the upper level was relatively empty. The server gave us the same sing song I heard throughout the evening as new diners were seated about the history of the restaurant, their cooking methods and origin of many of their ingredients as had... Perhaps the best under rated Italian restaurant in Chicago. Brings a little bit of Italy to America. Authentic cuisine well presented; with the right amount of space to enjoy a relaxed meal.

Wonderful northern Italian restaurant. Great service with a warm environment. All the pasta is homemade, and the sauces are uniquely delicious. A must restaurant in Chicago!

The staff was excellent. I ordered the steak dinner- special of the day. Little on the rare side for my preference. Steak needed more seasoning- Had better. The pasta appetizer very good and rich flavours. The warm chocolate molten cake was my favourite part of the meal. All in all average meal with excellent service.

Dined on the recommendation of a colleague. Service excellent from start to finish, waitstaff has tremendous knowledge of menu and was attentive to perfection. Had three courses with wine, do not remember menu selections but they were all excellent. Although not the purpose of my visit, would make an excellent setting for a quiet romantic dinner.

This, by far, is one of the premier restaurants in Chicago. The family owned restaurant is housed in a gorgeous brownstone on Maple, just a few blocks from Lake Michigan. We had reservations but opted to have a drink at the bar first. The bartender was the BEST. We even went back the next night for another drink to chat... More

Staying in Gold Coast

Neighborhood Profile
Gold Coast
Located just north of The Loop, Gold Coast is one of Chicago’s most affluent and popular neighborhoods. The original Playboy, Hugh Hefner, once had a mansion here. In addition to prestigious hotels, historic mansions and luxury high-rise apartments, you’ll also find upscale specialty boutiques and Michelin-starred restaurants. Walk along Oak Street for your shopping fix and dance through the night along Rush Street. The Newberry Library is also a great stop to check out noteworthy exhibits and rare book collections.
