We had dinner here on a cold windy night, but the food took us back to our summer trip to Macau (without the heat and humidity!). We had looked forward to eating here for a while, and so glad to have dinner here on this...visit to Chicago. We were seated at a long communal table with strangers, but that was okay. Seated away from door, which was great because cold air near the doorway. Staff was friendly, and clarified items on the menu. We LOVED our shared choices. We started with the linguica, the char sui, and the sardinhas furosos. Wow! We then shared the chili prawns, large beautiful, just the right amount of heat. Then we shared the uttapam. We followed it up with the famous Fat Rice. What a party in a bowl!! We thoroughly enjoyed everything, but the prawns and the fat rice were the favorite. We had nice Portuguese red wine. We finished with coffee and the Eton Mess. A great time and a unique food experience. Definitely will return to order the prawns and the fat rice again, as well as other items that we would like to try.More

We are always looking for a unique brunch experience. Many friends suggested that we needed to try Fat RIce. Beginning to end, Fat Rice was an adventure. After settling in with a Mango Mimosa, we tried the pork and Ginger Dumplings with X.O. Sauce. Nice...and spicy with that umami goodness. Next we enjoyed the Spicy Prawns and Minchi Mosca. The Prawns are one of those decadent dishes that you savor till the end. Wow! The minchi was that beautiful end to our brunch with the soft-cooked egg yolk rounding out the ground meat and spices. Lastly, service was excellent. Laura, one of the bartenders, guided us through the menu as well as our meal. Brunch does get a little expensive, but it is memorable!More

The food here was excellent. I have been to Macau and it is great to find a place in Chicago that serves this style of cuisine. I had a few problems with the restaurant. The hostess had a bit of an attitude, the noise level...was way to loud. I couldnt hear my wife across the table. Also the seating is community style so one long table shared with other guests. But the biggest problem is the door to the restaurant. Every time a guest enters the cold air comes blowing in and is very uncomfortable. The space is an old bar (I assume as most of these new restaurants in logan square are) making the design a problem. This restaurant should be in another larger space , but I guess if they did that it would lose its hipster image. Overall the service was excellent, the waitstaff was great and fast. And the food was top notch. Besides those few small issues I would recommend it. But please go during the summer or spring. And make a reservation as well.More

Stopped by on my way to O'Hare as it is an easy walk from the Logan Square Blue Line. The restaurant has plenty of counter seating which was great as I was eating solo. I had the Purple Bandit beverage which was light, refreshing and...not too sweet. I also had the Lacassa and an egg tart. You know the food is good when it demands your full attention to eat! The char siu pork is a must-have, extremely flavorful. I also am not a big tofu fan but I enjoyed their take on it. The egg tart was amazing overall! It was a bit too sweet for my taste but since they have to cater to American norms I don't count that against them.More

I have known about Fat Rice for at least two years, when it hit the foodie circuit in Chicago. Lines too long, impossible to get in. Finally a fellow Asian friend (he's 100% Chinese from Malaysia I am 50% Korean from Cuba) and I went...for lunch on a Wednesday. The small corner eatery was relatively empty. Standard decor--recycled industria seats,tin tile ceilings, pottery from various parts of the Portuguese colonies; well lit The menu was not extensive, and we already had an idea of what we wanted. I came specifically for the pastel de nata-- an addiction I developed in Lisbon. My friend handled the Chinese (Macao) and Southeast Asians influences. The concept of the restaurant is a great idea, since the Portuguese empire gets little attention in our cultural landscape (excerpt for Brasil) but indeed, there are influences from India, China, and, although not included, Africa--Mozambique and Angola. Our young server was informative and amiable. We ordered two dishes: the tofu with tamarind sauce was amazing. Our fried rice was a combination of ingredients familiar to us, --probably not to most American diners. The pasteis were indeed like the ones in Lisbon. At 50 some dollars, it was a bit pricey for a lunch .Would we return? Perhaps with more friends to share the arroz gordo, but there are options closer and more affordable in our neighborhood.More

Loved finally making it into the bakery before it closed for the day! We tried the traditional egg tart (delicious beyond belief, I liked then so much I tried to make them from scratch at home, not nearly as good) and the not so traditional...coffee glazed coconut cream stuffed doughnut (also amazing and complex in flavor). But what really made this first trip special was the girl behind the counter. She was kind and helpful and explained what everything was and what she thought we might like with never being here before. It's easy to see everything is made from the heart and tastes like it too!More

This tiny Logan Square serves inventive and complex dishes. Paying homage to the cuisine of the island of Macau and recognizing the influences of China, India, and Portugal. The staff is friendly and engaging with customers. We sat at the left side of the bar...with a clear sight into the kitchen. As we saw amazing food emerge, we would flag down the waiter to tell us what the dish was. All the wait staff was very happy to share. The cocktails we saw prepared looked delicious. We started with the Sardinha's Furosos, Portuguese sardines with Chinese mustard and pickles. It was served in the sardine can with the paper label cleverly folded on the plate. We scooped up a spoon of the mixture in the can and rolled it into small nori wrappers. Delicious! We also ordered Uttapam a south Indian griddlecake served with peanuts raw seasonal vegetables, a sunny egg on top and a wonderful spicy sauce reminiscent of a dal. Very unusual and tasty. We would order this again but ask for more sauce. We then had Lacassa noodles a noodle stir fry and O Diabo spicy mustard laced curry with chicken char siu and wood-roasted beef. We ordered the coconut rice to accompany this last dish. Everything was delicious but the sardines and uttapam were so unusual that they really stood out. I would order everything again in a heartbeat. Leftovers were placed into Chinese takeout containers and delivered to us in a paper bag. Excellent, inventive meal!More

Made a reservation in advance, which I highly recommend! Or just plan to wait a bit for a table during meal times. Dumplings + Fat Rice was delicious! Fat Rice was big enough that, for two, we had plenty of leftovers to bring home!

I went her tonight for dinner. I was very much looking forward to eating here based on reviews, word of mouth, and the uniqueness of the menu (have not seen Macanese food anywhere else). The space was cool and service was very good. The food,...on the other hand, was fairly average. Not bad but not a “wow”. Perhaps I built this place to much in my head but it was just OK.More
