The restaurant has good vegetarian food and large portions. Two people can share a plate of biryani. The staff is polite and friendly. It's very close to Chicago Getaway hostel (about 8-10 minutes on foot). So if you're not in the mood to cook, you can head on over here. The place is nothing fancy or interesting and does not have a very exciting or social vibe. My only complaint would be the songs being played. It's the same set of songs over and over and over which after some time gets annoying.

Love Indian food and this place did not disappoint. We ordered 2 dishes, chicken tikka and the other a shrimp dish on top of rice. They both tasted authentic and full of flavors. The place is clean and has good amount of space where you dont feel cramped. Relative to most restaurants that serve as good or better food along Devon St, I would say that the prices here are just a bit higher. The service is just ok. Our water was never refilled Paid $40 with tip for 2 dishes and naan bread. This is a safe place if you want a guaranteed delicious meal. I might try other places in the area but have no problems coming back here.

I am sad to say this but I wish Hema’s had gone out of business so my last experience confirmed my previous expectations and experiences. I have been a loyal customer for over 20 years. My most recent order was cold, lacked flavor, prices increased and the portion was half the normal size! They have been my favorite Indian and horrible to say I am not going back 😩

EXTREMELY RACIST!!!! (I never complain but this was my first time witnessing racism from a restaurant) I placed my order thru the website which navigates you to simplemenu. When I first walked in PAM one of the workers told me to come to the back to pick up delivery. I went to the back and said, " I must be the only person order delivery because you didn't ask for a delivery or order number. " I looked at food and told her this is not my food. She said show me that you ordered. I pulled my order up which I ordered over an hour ago & she said "we will make for you". Another man walks in and she walks the food up to the man and ask him if he was picking up. I ask her, why did she tell me to walk to the back and pick up my food when she assumed that was my order but walks the food up to the gentleman that just walked in? SHE SAID I ASSUMED U WERE PICKING UP DELIVERY FOR UBER EATS 😯😯 . Why? I asked. SHE SAY BECAUSE PEOPLE THAT PICKS UP LOOKS LIKE YOU😠😡. What?!? I don't even want the food anymore. EXCUSE ME? ARE YOU SAYING BECAUSE I'M BLACK I COULDN'T PURCHASE $70 WORTH OF INDIAN FOOD AND I MUST BE THE DELIVERY PERSON? I canceled my order & went down the street

We stopped into Hema's Kitchen at 8pm on a Friday night. We were greeted warmly and shown to our seat. It went downhill from there. They were obviously short-staffed. As diners left, their tables went unbussed. It took quite awhile for them to take our order and then, after 30 minutes, we were told that or order was lost and they were then making our meal. After waiting another 15 minutes, I asked when our food would be served and was told 5 minutes. We gave them 10 minutes... no food and we left. I have eaten at Hema's Kitchen on Clark and the food was really good. Unfortunately, I didn't get to experience the food at Hema's Kitchen on Devon.

We wanted to see something else than Chicago downtown and have someting else to eat than american steaks and decided to take a taxi to Devon Avenue. This is totally different from Chicago downtown and the staff at the restaurant was very friendly. The food was very good and we tried many different disches and they were all great. Remeber to bring your wine with you :)

The food is excellent. I had ordered their Chicken Malai tikka and it was nice with good flavor. The owner was nice to talk to when she told me a small background about her family and her passion for the restaurant. I would highly recommend this place to everyone who wants to taste the authentic Indian food.

This mile stretch of Devon avenue in North Park area is a melting pot of cultures from Indian, Jewish, Asian, Pakistan and the Middle East. Hema the owner is warm and welcoming. mango lassi was sooo good and my ginger tea was very soothing. The tandoori chicken is so tender it was falling off the bone. We also ate their Tasty lamb curry, Mateer paneer(peas and cheese) , chicken makhani (butter chicken , naan and basmati rice. All the dishes were delicious!!

There are, of course, tons of great Indian restaurants along Devon to choose from. This past Saturday we were specifically looking for a BYOB place and that is what led us to Hema's. Atmosphere was quiet when we got there. It was probably around 6:30pm (we were with our kids) but go more lively as the place filled up. By the time we left it was in full swing and had a great Saturday evening vibe. Portions were medium sized and everything was really, really good. I find the if a place has delicious naan and rice, it usually indicates the rest of the meal will be delicious as well. Hema even stopped by our table to check on us! If you are in from out of town and want to go off the beaten track, I'd highly recommend going up to Devon and checking out Hema's or one of the many great restaurants in the area.

I haven't been to Hema's since she moved from her original location to west of Western Ave. on Devon. My dinner was as delicious as were numerous meals at the previous location years ago. We asked Hema for her recommendations and followed her advice. The taste sensations exceeded expectations! We ordered Lamb Rogan Josh, Spinach Paneer and Garlic Naan. Our order came with steamed white rice. Hema is a gracious hostess and we enjoyed conversing with her. Can't wait to return.

When you walk in, this restaurant looks nice. I expected it to be a good Indian restaurant, but I was wrong. The water glasses on the table were dirty. The food arrived about 40 minutes after I ordered, and it was far from cooked to order. I ordered the Aloo Gosht (mild) and it came extremely spicy. Our waitress was rude and had entirely forgot to bring me my food until I asked again. I was unable to eat the food because of how spicy it was. This was such a bad experience that I had to leave only a 15% tip (I normally leave 20%). I would strongly advise against going here because of how bad the service was.

Had friends coming into town from Wisconsin and made plans to get lunch on Devon. As the local, I was tasked with choosing the restaurant. Not knowing the options well myself, I googled the night before and found Hema's Kitchen. Comments online sounded good. Listing said they opened at noon. Called them anyway to make sure they were open for lunch the day we were going and was told they were. Made plans with friends to meet there. Arrived at 12:15. Door locked. Knocked on glass, no answer. Called the number again and got an answer, but was told we had to wait outside, they'd be open in 15-30 minutes. Embarrassed. We went elsewhere. I have no clue if their food is any good or not, but have no intention of ever going back to find out.
