The best in everything. It never smells like seafood, really clean. People are nice and friendly. A variety of seafood to choose from. You can take home fresh seafood and cook it yourself at home or they'll cook for you. Fish, crab legs, shrimp, conch...they have it all! Best low country boil in the low country. I just wish they offered grilled, and a sit down restaurantMore
I ordered the low country boil for a party on a Friday afternoon. I called several hours in advance and gave them a pickup time. When I got there, there was nowhere to park. Customers from the restaurant next door overflowed to the crab house...parking lot. I had to park in the middle of the lot behind a line of cars. The inside was packed as well. It took 30 minutes to pick up my order (that was already supposed to be ready). Customer service was good as far as being polite and getting orders in. The food was more than enough to feed my group and everything tasted good, but the shrimp was hard to peel and the corn was soggy. My suggestion, don't go on a Friday afternoon.More
On Main street in downtown Statesboro is a small seafood spot run by a bunch of Nepali guys. And even though Nepal is nowhere near the ocean, these guys know seafood, fried and otherwise. You can buy fish raw fish or shellfish, but why, when...these guys will fry them or broil them or boil them just right. They're open seven days a week, but if you happen by exactly at lunch or suppertime, be prepared to wait a few minutes folks of various colors and kinds ahead of you get their orders filled. I asked a couple walking out the door with armloads of bags if the wait was worth it. All they said was, "Delicious!" There's an extensive menu that includes shrimp, fish, deviled crab, conch and oysters. I surveyed the fish cooler for what looked freshest and asked for the fried shrimp and oyster combo along with a couple of fresh pompano to cook at home. The fried seafood was...well...delicious, just like they said. And plentiful -- I had enough for two. The pompano I had to leave, 'cause I ran out of cash and didn't have a credit card along. Next time I'll be better prepared.More
Looking for some local seafood "dives" with good food I read on TripAdvisor about the massive servings and good seafood at the Southern Crab House. We sat in the adjacent parking lot and looked at it for a while before going in! They have a...lot of fresh fish and other products like conch plus a steady stream of clientele coming in for huge pans of shrimp for BBQ's, single dinners and some uncooked fish. This is truly a dive type beachfront (except it's on a parking lot not a beach) place. The walls are covered with an assortment of hand lettered signs and the locals seem to already know what they are getting. I went for the combination shrimp and scallop platter with french fries for $14 which the person at the counter assured me was enough for two. There are no tables so all food is to go but they provide you with napkins and forks. One sauce for each order or pay extra for more.
The main clerk said he was from Mexico and when I asked where the shrimp came from he said South America or .....I should have asked where the scallops came from. They had a lot of farm raised fish I wouldn't eat like Swai and Tilapia. The other clerk was from Nepal and a third man came out with my order and I'm not sure where he was from. There was a constant stream of local people sometimes spending hundreds of dollars for crabs and shrimp for a party.
It's an enormous amount of everything and all battered and fried. I don't think the scallops were real scallops but possibly skate cut to look like scallops an old trick.
Unless you're an experienced world traveler I wouldn't advise the Southern Crab House although we didn't get sick and it was a lot of food for the money....real scallops or not!More
