Having enjoyed a trip around the motor museum we stopped in the Ambio not really expecting much. As it turned out, the vegetable soup was delicious and my wife, who has a sweet tooth, decided to have a cinnamon and apple pie with cream and it was one of the most delicious sweets that she tasted during all our holiday... 16 of us arrived here for lunch on our car club run. The restaurant was busy but the service was well organised, quick and friendly. The food was excellent and very good value. We ordered sandwiches but did not want the accompanying salad bowl or alternative of chips...the restaurant provided us with a bag of crisps each to make up... More

I don't usually like cafes attached to visitor attractions like this but I'm glad that I made an exception here. Staff were great - friendly and cheerful We ordered Eggs Ambio and a Ploughmans Platter. Both arrived quickly and were very tasty. The ploughmans was enormous - plenty of cheese, ham and bread as well as a whole pork pie... More

A canteen style service at restaurant prices! Basic queuing system like at school, had to retrieve cutlery cheap serviettes (1 ply), a good half hour wait for a mediocre break fast @£24 for 2. One slice of toast, tepid beans, re-heated bacon and sausage, deep fried black pudding a very small poached egg and a boarder lined cooked un seasoned... More

We arrived just as lunch was about to be served. Lovely location, great service from friendly attentive staff. Had roast beef Sunday lunch which I really enjoyed. The cakes looked good but they were not covered up and we saw a couple of large flies landing on several of them. I would have loved a cake as well but obviously... More

Came to the cafe on a lovely sunny day. Comfortable seating inside and out. Very bright seating area, lots of windows. Food was excellent although the service was quite slow. Friendly, competent service, would come again

It seemed the catering here would well suit a family day out with a good selection reasonably priced. Also pleasant views across the river particularly on a day when it's comfortable to sit outside.

We visited the museum next door and called for a coffee and a snack, a brief look at the menu and decided to have a griddled chicken burger, on arrival at the table it looked amazing, the taste was also fantastic, even though the cafe was totally rammed with people the staff were brilliant, great food, great value and a... For a cafe by a museum, this was an excellent place for coffee, cake and a breakfast bun. Service was good and the views of the river really nice (when it stopped raining!)

The inclusion of 'ambio' in the business name would imply, for many people, an ambience of some sort and this would be a misinterpretation. In the Ings Cafe Ambio and the one at Backbarrow I experienced a kind of surreal detachment between the staff and the 'punters.' Staff will operate within their professional role from behind the serving counter and... More
