I passed this place and was curious, always looking for a good BBQ restaurant in GA. The little restaurant had a few red cushioned bench seat tables and a TV going. You order at the counter and they have a breakfast menu and a BBQ...menu on the wall. It is called Fat Freddies II and when I questioned where "I" was and where was Fat Freddie, they explained there was no Fat Freddies "I" and they were the second owners as the restaurant was purchased from Fat Freddie. I ordered 5 $.99 chipped sandwiches and a rack of ribs. They offered the sandwiches with pickles and slaw, which I refused. They offered a choice of about 5 different sauces from mild to super hot. The sauces were the typical towns mustard sauces. Personally, I do not like the mustard sauces, but the mild was not "bad". I also ordered the mild with the ribs on the side. The ribs came dry smoked. The sandwiches would not rank among my favorite in town. The amount of meat was the least of the BBQs I have tried and included a mix of drier meats blended with sauce and I'm not sure what else. My personal favorite is Clearview and this is more like 13th street chipped, but less meat and the same drier ends used to make it. These "chipped" sandwiches are pretty popular in Columbus and it is basically sauce and meat blended in a chipping machine. Clearview uses a more tender cut to make their chipped sandwiches. Fat Freddies seems to be the greasiest of all the ones I mentioned. The ribs seemed straight smoked and cooked pretty good. There was a noticeable absences of seasoning on the ribs, so it was mostly a meat and smoke taste. I was not happy with the dry overdone ends, but the center cut was much better. There was not a significant amount of excessive fat on these ribs. The quality cut of these ribs was not the best but at the $13 price, it was better than I expected. I was not happy with the way they cut the ribs and it was cut haphazard and there was alot of cartilage at the ends. I used my own sauce at home and not their mustard sauce. I enjoyed the ribs yet they are not my favorite. They will win no awards, but it comes in below the Mike and Eds and Clearview and maybe Macon Road, but better than Countries and Chesters. For my first trip to Fat Freddies I was happy with the value and very happy they took credit cards. I would certainly be back for a value priced rack of ribs if in the area. I gave Fat Freddies a try and found it a bit uninspired. For my tastes it is not my favorite in town, but they are good enough to recommend for some value priced BBQ ribs.More
