I typically write reviews only when I have had a memorable experience (either because it was good or bad). This review is the first time I have written a review pursuant to an experience with both characteristics. Sage has a great concept and presence. The...physical environment, ambience, and service are terrific. There is a rooftop bar and, based upon what one of the employees whom I talked with, said there are plans to add food service (a good indication that the owners are fully invested). The presentation of the food is truly artistic and imaginative. At least for us, taste (with the exception of the caesar salad) fell short of artistry. A big disappointment was the shrimp, which was described in exotic and pungent terms. The dish I was served, however, had a salt overdose (or the functional equivalent thereof), that for me overpowered the flavors. About halfway through the meal, I threw in the towel with respect to the shrimp. Once my spouse finished, I requested the check -- at which point the waiter asked if I had a problem with my dish. I told him it was too salty for my taste. He asked if I would like something else, and I told him "no, that's okay -- problem. (Unless something like a glass of wine is spoiled, my practice is not to ask for a replacement or a comp because the restaurant should not bear the burden of my not liking a dish simply for taste reasons). We were surprised, therefore, when the waiter returned and said the manager would not take the meal off the check because I had eaten too much of it. We were taken aback, because we never asked to have the dish removed from the check. The manager's response to a request we never made came across as gratuitous and left us feeling that we were thought of as scammers. We then left with a "bad taste in our mouths." So, in sum, we really liked the environment and concept. The food, from our perspective, was presented beautifully, but taste was nothing to rave about. Based in significant part upon the incident at the end of the meal, and given the multitude of dining choices in downtown Sarasota, I doubt we would return.More
