my wife and I went on Thanksgiving eve to meet some friends. My friends arrived earlier, we agreed to meet at the bar and there would be five of us. when we arrived, we were greeted by the hostess, we informed her that we were...meeting friends. she stated that there is no standing rule at the bar and there were only two chairs left. the place was nowhere near full and there was room to add another chair at the bar. The bartender was equally as rude, so we left and went next door. The owner son owns the place next door, and the service was equally as bad. I guess they Truley thinks they are warden at a real jail. Over price menu for the area and what you get. much better and friendlier places to eat in Sanford.More

We were greeted by Nick the bartender. He was incredible! Bantered with history buff movie and music references and made amazing cocktails. We then went in to dinner where we met Amanda who was attentive and informative about the menu. The food was incredible! Next...time we will split an entree. We had the chocolate cake desert that was full of chocolate flavor yet light at the same time. This is truly our new go to restaurant in Sanford!More

Went in for appetizers on Aug 25th. First let me say that I grew up in Sanford, and know a lot of the history. I absolutely love how they kept the authenticity of the space. The Old Jailhouse looks like an old jailhouse. The staff...was wonderful. The hostess sat us near the kitchen. After sitting there a few minutes, it was just too hot. The server was quite gracious about moving us to another table where it was cooler. The first appetizer I tried was the Prawns in a Blanket, which is a shrimp spring roll. These were absolutely delicious. They were nice and crunchy on the outside, with mouthwatering flavors inside. The other appetizer I tried was the Smoked Fish Dip. I cannot say enough good things about this dish. The dip itself had so much flavor. Hands down the best dip I have ever eaten. The pita bread that came with it was lightly toasted. They were crispy on the outside, yet soft on the inside. Perfect to pair with the fish dip. I will absolutely return to this restaurant. Not only for that amazing fish dip, but also to sample some of the entrees. This was a wonderful experience from the decor, to the staff, to the food.More

We dined here this evening, August 12, 2022. It exceeded our expectations. Everything was great, from the food to the staff to the venue to even the drinks. We love a restaurant where the conversation and the venue are more important than the music and...“noise”. It was quiet but certainly not boring. The history of the place is fascinating, and the staff are like docents in a historic place. We had burgers, skewered pork loin, empanadas, salads, fries (excellent!), braised red cabbage and potatoes. Flavors were perfect. If asked what could have been done better, I’d have difficulty coming up with an answer. For some the sauce with the empanadas was too hot, but most liked it. The prices are quite reasonable. We went early (4:30 reservation) and it was not busy, but getting there by the time we left. We’ll be back.More

Starting with the host at the entrance, too superior to the clients, as if doing you a favor to go in. We were 4 and just asked to let us in to have a drink, she said no, the bar was too full. We asked...if we could go in so our friends who were visiting from out of state could see the place, she said no, it is too full. Terrible.More

Food was great. Hostess seemed a little uninterested in guests. Staff that served our table was new but did the best they could.

We've heard glowing things about this location and have tried to stop by a couple of times, in the past, when visiting the Sanford area. The last time was just as they were closing and we couldn't be seated. No worries. We were in the...area around lunchtime today and thought we would give it another try. We arrived just after noon and were one of the first to be seated, which was great as we had time and the room to check the place out (it was filling up by the time we left). We enjoyed all the old photos showing the place during earlier times. We even had time to check out the old Ledger showing some of those who were unfortunate enough to have visited against their will in times past. Our waiter was gracious and told us some tails associated with the place including the story of a hanging in the rear portion of the building. They have spent time and treasure remodeling this place and it really shows. Great job. Our table was near the visitor's area where the incarcerated would visit callers through the bars. The place has character. Service was quick and attentive. Full bar. Yes, the menu is limited and the price is pushing but we think it's worth it. Our meals were excellent. It's our new place to take out-of-town guests. Enjoy!More

Hard to say if I was gonna give an average review, or a very good review, as our experience was good for the most part. Our server Keith was very nice and attentive, and the setup up and atmosphere was really cool. Food was good,...but pretty limited as far as the main courses go (only 8 options). There were 5 of us, and we all tried something different. I personally liked my shrimp and grits ok, but wished there was more than 6 shrimp. The steak was delicious and perfectly cooked. I tried the chicken gnocchi, which wasn't my favorite, though I'm not a big fan of that dish anyway. We loved the pretzels appetizer with cheese sauce, and the Brussels sprouts were just fantastic! I also got the chance to try the octopus, and it was cooked to perfection! I definitely would go back there again and try other of their dishes.More

My fiance and I have been hearing and seeing the Old Jailhouse for quite some time now but hadn't had the chance to try it yet. We finally did a month or so ago for weekend brunch and were very very pleased! It's a unique...location with very cool, but not cheesy decor. Very nice inside and staff was very friendly! We ordered the hot honey fried chicken brunch item as well as the breakfast meal - both were absolutely delicious and perfectly seasoned and the portions were healthy but not overwhelming or wasteful. We definitely have plans to return!More

This is a real old jailhouse from the 1800’s. It was empty for over 40 years before being turned into a restaurant. Food is a little pricey, but was very good.

Sanford has seen a downtown boom with delicious restaurants, fun bars and microbreweries. The downtown area of Sanford has really upped their game and the district is revitalized and thriving. My favorite restaurant in this area is the Old Jailhouse! The history of the building...is fascinating as it was an old jailhouse in the early 1900s (I believe circa 1918 through the 30s). A couple of the dining rooms still have the signage and old brick for viewing. While the building’s history is unique, it’s the service and food that set it apart! The cauliflower florets is a favorite appetizer. I went with the Nashville hot chicken as an entree and our server was very personable and engaging. I highly recommend this restaurant for couples or groups. Make sure you make reservations!More
