The wait staff was very rude, had to ask for drinks, salsa tasted like spaghetti sauce no flavor. Food was average at best, would never return

I ordered a pickup from the restaurant website. I received a notification it would be ready between 6:15 and 6:30. Due to traffic I didn't arrive until 6:50. I was sent to the bar to pick it up.They knew nothing about the order and went...to the computer where they found it and said it will be ready soon. They obviously hadn't been paying attention to online orders. The staff all had face masks that were hanging below their faces. Twenty minutes + later the order was ready. The meals were barely acceptable. The sauce on the fish and shrimp for the Especial del Mar was barely visible. There were 3 small shrimp. The guacamole was a chunk of FL avacado which was tasteless with no cilantro or hint of lime juice. The chile relleno and enchiladas were not good. Had been to this restaurant many times before covid. It has changed. We wont be back, ever.More
where do is start with this place? upon walking in, there was nobody to seat us, or the other couple behind us....we stood there waiting, noticing a rather large woman in blue, hanging out at the bar, looking at us....kind of odd, but thought, well...she's drunk.....finally, a server came up, no hello, just a HOW MANY. she sat us in a booth threw, yes threw, the menus on the table & walked away and saw her do the same with the other couple behind us. finally, as more people came in a guy on the other side up the bar, which looked like a customer, drinking and hanging out with the barflies....came up front to start seating people. we ordered the 24 oz. margarita, it was good. salsa & chips were just ok, salsa is VERY heavy on garlic.....ordered our food, a chimichanga with fajita meet and a combo platter. the food was all ok, the refried beans were the star, so creamy and rich, one of the best beans i've ever had (i assume they were made with lard, that's why they were so tasty!) NOT 1 plate or glass or empty chip basket were ever cleared, we just had a pile of stuff at the end of the table..... so, we were ready to go, looking around for our server, then i noticed that the big lady in blue at the bar was not a drunk customer, but a drunk owner because she started calling out the servers to do random tasks and instructed our server to get over to our table, she came by dropped off the check, carrying her coat like she was leaving, never telling us to pay up front, so we just sat there waiting to pay until the lady in blue yelled over to pay up front, wow, just the poorest service....... so, this is what we came away with: the place is oddly in a large warehouse, was filled up early; we were there at 6:30 and the place started to empty out, along came a herd of geriatrics. seems like this is favored by the elderly, because once they all left, the place was empty. it also seems like the 2 owners, like to sit at the bar and drink, ignoring the fact that the servers & bartender were swamped, as they just sat there drinking, thus the VERY POOR SERVICE..... we both decided that this is NOT a place we would return to, NOR recommend it.....there are many other BETTER mexican restaurants around.More
We were looking forward to an authentic Mexican dinner but were highly disappointed. The pork was fatty, burnt and gristly; the tacos were greasy I couldn’t eat the meal. I pointed this out to our waitress who looked at the plate of grease, took it...with her into the kitchen, and yelled at the chef about the condition of the food. It was so bad the waitress took the initiative to take the meal off our bill. Later that night we were both ill during the night. I like supporting local businesses but this is a restaurant we will NEVER visit again.More
We ordered online as we are in a pandemic. The restaurant said online that no table service only take out or delivery but when we got there we saw a few people in the restaurant. They were not busy but fouled up our order. I...asked if there were chips and salsa in the order, NONE were there, I ordered a combination order two items were correct one was not. We were 40 minutes from home and did not find out until we got home. The food we received tasted good but it was disappointing not to have any chips with the few salsa they gave us. My Chicken Quesadilla was cheese Quesadilla. My Chicken Relleno Pepper Topped with Ranchero Sauce was excellent, and my Chicken Enchiladas was tasty too. My wife's Molcajete was a lot of food, but the jalapeño was too hot for her so I took out seeds and ate the skin... Still hot,... Overall the food was good to exceptional but fouling up the order with no one else there is strange to me.More
Authentic Mexican. Fresh salsa and chips. Not busy at all for a Friday night. Lots of space to bring large groups or workplace. Had the chicken Mexican crunch wrap. Lots of flavor and not heavy at all. Other party had the carnitas. He made the...comment they’re moist and crispy... made perfectly. Will be back to try more stuff. Waitress was friendly.More
We recently ordered takeout from this restaurant. We had been here previously and thought the food was good. We decided to try Taco Tuesday, for $1 tacos. The tacos were not very stuffed and no chips and salsa included, which other Mexican restaurants that I've...ordered takeout from have included. I felt like I ordered Taco Bell tacos. They were tacos, but a little disappointed and likely would try another Mexican restaurant before coming back to this one as the food was ok, but nothing to write home about.More
Food was pretty good until reaching bottom of chips. There was a bug 🐜 well done and they tried to pass it off as meat that was fried in oil. Meat does not have legs!! Plus why was it in chips? We got to looking...around and place was filthy. Saw boxes stacked in room back of cash register that had definitely been wet. Board of Health needs to check this place out. Avoid this place!! Will not be back. Would give it -5 stars if possible😡😡😡😡 Our check was $33.67 and she charged $36.00. I told her and she said $36.00 was with tax. I told her tax had already been added on. Wish I had not left a tip!! Wish I would have taken picture but the basket was removed from table immediately.More
This is the fifth time we’ve been there. We live in Illinois and Mexican restaurants are a dime a dozen but very most very good. We have many Mexican friends, who make us authentic Mexican food. El Sombrero is the real thing!!! Their salsa is...very flavorful without being overly hot. The guacamole is perfect, period. Chunky but not over done. The rice is more Puerto Rican because it has more vegetables in it, but that is the one thing that is done better that way. I have had flautas, fajitas, carne asada, and quesadillas with steak fajita meat. Everything has abuela’s authentic stamp on it. The margaritas are out of this world! Going there is like having comfort food. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and the atmosphere is fun. I’ve been here for lunch and dinner and I have never been disappointed! Definitely make this a stop if you want soul renewing Mexican Food!!! I think you should disregard the other reviews...those people probably like Acapulco or Chipotle Mexican Food!More
Don't want to say bad things it was ok but someone said I had to try and we have other favorites. Mine was better than the wife's it had bacon
Let me start with, it was 5:40 on a Sunday evening and there was 5 cars in the parking lot, not reassuring.... there was a reason why...I had a chicken burrito. No taste, very dry chicken! The salsa tasted like stewed tomatoes! And, the service...was unbelievable awful! Don't waste your money!More
Most restaurants welcome take out orders because it does not take up seating capacity but El Sombrero has a surcharge for take out and as if that is not enough if you eat in they give you chips & salsa for free however when you...get take out and ask for Chips and Salsa they want to charge $4.99 This is not how you run a successful businessMore
This was the famous Taco night and it was a total waste of time and food experience. The service was absolutely horrible the waitress was way to busy to properly wait on us. She was busy dealing with friends or acquaintances and we did not...see her until it was check time. I ordered the carne Assada and was the consistency of shoe leather. The only redemption was the salad. The chicken mola was unrecognizable, the sauce was terrible and left a horrible taste in your mouth. The chicken had been cut in squares that where tasteless and not at all appetizing. Now if you want to get drunk this looks like the right place since the majority of the patrons were loud, this was from drinking affordable margaritas. Also the tables had huge unsightly burn marks making the whole experience disgusting. The place was dark and the floors were littered. Never again!!!More
It was very busy and hectic. The food was fantastic, but service was a bit erratic. Be ready to order and try and get it the first time because you probably won’t get your waitress back.
The funny thing is that we read the reviews about this place before we went. We should have listened to the latest reviews. But, we had hope. Place was sort of clean, dim lighting with huge burn marks in our table. Cutely decorated with typical...Mexican restaurant garb. We were quickly seated and received our drinks fast. They also served us a basket of cold stale chips that tasted good, but had the feel that they have been sitting out all day long (maybe their warmer was broken?). Salsa was good though. The big issue was my food. I ordered a combo plate. Chicken Enchalada, Tamal and a Beef Taco. I got a Chicken Enchilada (that was good), a tamale that tasted like it was in the freezer uncovered for about a month and completely indelible and a chicken taco (I ordered beef). I wanted to say something to the waitress, but we didn't see her again for about 25 minutes. She just dropped our food and ran. There were two wait staff and the place was not even 1/4 full. At that point we just asked for the check. They did refund me for my meal, she looked shocked about what I said about the food. Still doesn't help that she never checked on us once. I will avoid this place in the future.More
