Jonathan was our server and he was great. He was very attentive and made sure we were taken care of. Terrific food and drinks, too.

Interesting Concept. You can stand in line for fresh shucked raw bar (at a great price) or be seated for table service and wait ...to long for basically the same food (if you want oysters, crab claws or clams). Service was slow regardless. Loves the live music and atmosphere, open air at the marina.

Monty's is a great place, from the food to the scenery. On a nice day, it is wonderful to sit on their patio.
The food was great....we shared a few different dishes. Tuna Ceviche, Gater, Conch, and the raw platter. Everything was wonderful. We were a little disappointed that the Conch was breaded and deep fried as the menu didn't state that, but it was still tasty.
The only thing that would have made it perfect would have been better service. We had to keep flagging someone down to serve us. It took forever to even grab someone to take our drinks and the girl we flagged down was not impressed by it. She clearly wasn't our server, and made it known. This is something that should be worked on.

As a resident of Miami, I am accustomed to many restaurants adding a 18% service charge to ensure that the servers get properly compensated for their work. I don't like it, but I am used to it. Monty's, however, takes it a step further. They add a 19% Service Charge to your check and then let you know in very specific terms that it is "neither a gratuity nor a tip." So, what then, is it? Is it going straight into the pocket of the owner? Just a 19% upcharge on the food so that the already inflated prices don't look quite as bad as they actually are? It's a crappy move. So, in order for you to tip your server properly, you have to pay a roughly 40% premium on your bill. No thanks. Done with Monty's

Hello David,
My name is Juan Barretta; I am the general manager for Monty's. Extremely sorry if you feel we are not clear enough on how the service charge works.
We had to change our vocabulary (legality) about the included gratuity. We cannot call a tip or gratuity when the business retains a portion of it. Most of the restaurants, if not all, have a similar system. The percentages may vary from business to business. But it doesn't mean the house keeps it all.
Legally, it is not a tip, but it works just like you may think. That now is called a "commission" (instead of gratuity). The server and bartender retain most of the commission to distribute with the busboy and the food runner.
On your receipt, because it is a charge, it should be shown as an item and not underneath the subtotal where the tip/gratuity used to be.
Now, if someone leaves extra money for the staff, that's legally a TIP. That money will ONLY go to your server/bartender 100%. But you don't have to leave any extra money.
If your server said that he/she was not getting any of the service charges, that's not accurate.
We are working quickly to make it crystal clear to our guests. If you have any questions please contact me at jbarretta@suntex.com
Thank you.

I am presently sitting in the restaurant I was the second party to be seated and then 7 other tables came after me and 4 of them were done and left before I ever received my food. I spoke to the manager By the name Maurice and he gave me an excuse that they had a lot of people and my party was 7 persons. After I complaint our food got there 10 minutes later and my fish and chips was all soggy. Even after all this no one ever bother coming by and ask how everything was. I personally have an interest in a restaurant in Coral Gables and I can tell you this is lack of service and poor management. Bottom line is that Monty’s is not what it use to be. I will give it a 👎

let me start off by saying how wonderful polite and friendly our server Josnery was not only did he help us with everything very promptly he also made us feel welcome and wanted. Everything was very sanitary and comforting. I know the Monty’s on south beach is owned by different people but you can even feel it in the experience when you go down to the quality of food and energy. Juan the GM was very accommodating and respectful when we spoke. My wife was ready to give up on Monty’s but you definitely just won us over WILL be returning

This is the third time I have eaten here. I enjoyed the first two times. Once for lunch during stone crab season and once for a casual dinner. i enjoyed both and thought the food was good. However, this time I visited during happy hour and was encouraged to take advantage of the Happy Hour Seafood Boat where you can order by the piece. It was yuck! The shrimp were overcooked and mealy. The oysters were muddy tasting - not clean and fresh. And, the stone crab claws (while warned by the service staff) were tough as they were previously frozen (definitely not worth $7 a claw). And, the drink that was not on special was just swill.
Despite the place nit being full, we were placed at a broken table. Service was slow and when waitstaff finally arrived, we asked to be moved.
After getting a new table, we had to wait again for a new waitstaff person. This person was friendly and attentive once we were addressed.
I will go again, but will never get the food off the Happy Hour Seafood Boat. Gross and certainly not worth the price.

We were seated by the hostess and it went down from there. We had to go find someone after 15 min to wait on us and that was the manager. She brought us our drinks and started taking our food order , enter person number three interrupting her to take the order. Anyway, 6 people actually saw us during our meal and we still didn’t get my shrimp! The only really good thing was the smoked fish dip. Coconut shrimp tasted like frozen and the crab cake was soggy😜 Would not recommend it!!! Sad it was the last meal of a wonderful trip to Florida!

I think the experience would be much better if a gratuity were not automatically added, only because there is no incentive for servers to provide excellent or even good service. I have to say it is my consistent experience that the service is lacking. It can be a long time between visits from the server so plan accordingly if you might want another drink or anything really. That said the food is very good and it's nice to be able to sit by the water in fresh air. If this restaurant were anywhere else I probably would not go only because there are many other great meals in the area at the same price point with much better service. Crab cakes and conch fritters are sure bets if you go. Better parking situation than in most of coconut grove.

Fun view and place, pretty good food, awful service. We like to go here. It is not cheap for what it is but has a good vibe. Service is awful. Today, we waited 45 minutes for our main courses after finishing our appetizers and one was completly wrong - waitress said she can change it but there will be a long delay. Other had wrong side which we fixed. Check came and we were charged for the $2 more expensive entree we did not want and barely ate. It also included. a 19% “obligatory” service charge - common in Miami but never called “obligatory”. The credit card voucher makes no reference of this - it is included in the subtotal and the next line marked “tip” is for the diner to complete and then total. Most places call that line “additional tip”. Parking ticket validation system out of order but the other one near hostess worked. We have fun here and so will you. Just expect bad service, pretty good food, not inexpensive prices and an obligatory servicr charge. Better to go to Key Largo or Islamorada for the same type of vibe with better food and service.

This was one place I’d go again and again for their happy hour and view of Miami and ocean. The outdoor bar and grill are located in a great area near the marina and where the ships come into the downtown area. Great view of the city and shore together. Secondly, this bar’s happy hour was second to none. Absolutely loved the drink selection and how reasonably priced it was. The food was fantastic, definitely try the stone crabs if you’ve never! Service wasn’t bad, either. Servers are definitely relaxed there, so to some it may seem “slow”. Order two drinks if need be and you’ll find yourself just as relaxed and less worried about “slow” service!

On the positive side, the setting is nice and the service was good. The food was ok, yet definitely overpriced. The stone crabs for $10 during happy hour are a joke, you're better off going to fresh market next door and getting decent sized stone crabs for the same price!
Why I write tourist trap? They include the service as an additional line with food & beverage, and then below after the total they have an additional line for the Tip. That's a very nasty trick and several, as you can read in other reviews, have sadly fallen into their trap. To top it off, the bathrooms are beyond filthy!
So make yourself a favor and avoid this place!

I had called earlier in the day and I asked if they still had stone crabs even though I thought they would be out of season.
The person who answered the phone said they did and also mentioned that there was a happy hour for the stone crabs so I was totally excited to try that.
I showed up only to find out that they didn’t have stone crabs but I was there and decided to try the restaurant.
I’m glad I did! The conch salad is phenomenal and the fish tacos I believe they were Baja fish tacos with grilled fish were equally as delicious
I finished it off with a Bundt cake for dessert with rum and ice cream it was good not great but very good
I would come back again especially when Stone crab is back in season

A pleasant seafood restaurant set alongside a marina in Coconut Grove. The food is good but not superb. The crab soup was tasty but served a bit lukewarm, the conch salad was just ok. Likewise, the fish and chips were ordinary and the skirt steak with rice and beans was standard. The curley fries, however, were excellent. Portions were ample and the prices were a tad high. The service was spotty due to the large crowd of diners. Again, food was good and standard — but would recommend it anyway.

I looked for a recommendation for good Pina Coladas in Miami and found an article in Time Out by Virginia Gil. Monty's came up first for Happy Hour.
Drinks were generous and delicious, oysters were fresh and the grilled Mahi was huge and fresh as well. My crab soup was probably the tastiest soup I've ever had.
