This is an iconic stop for many people when they visit this area. Memorabilia of the Yearling and other items are displayed everywhere. My wife ordered the Shrimp plate with one side, salad and hush puppies. It was very good. The hush puppies were tiny....She ordered cheese grits and the Caesar salad. I ordered the shrimp and grits platter with collard greens, Caesar salad and hush puppies. Also, good. We were curious to see that on the shrimp plate there were ten shrimp. On the shrimp and grits plate there were five. They were the same price. My wife ordered the side of grits we basically had the same plate, just saying. The prices were a little steep.More

I don’t know if it was an ‘off’ day for the cook or what. I was so excited to be back at one of my favorite restaurants after 18 months. There were three of us and we all were not happy with most of our...meals. That being said the sweet tea and fried green tomatoes were excellent. The shrimp, one of us had fried and the other one grilled, was dry, not very flavorful, and a bit over cooked. The cheese grits were also undercooked and as my mother would term it, ‘the cheese walked through on stilts’. The hush puppies were okay, but the okra and tomatoes side selection was a soggy, bland mess. I hate writing a bad review. I so love this restaurant and the ambience and decor is extremely special and unusual. I will try the Yearling again, hoping this was just an exception and not the norm.More

So many people had recommended this restaurant to us, so when we were camping in our RV nearby in Lochloosa, we made a reservation to meet up with a couple of friends for dinner. What a delightful place and setting. My wife and I don't...eat out much, quite honestly we prefer our own cooking, and are not particularly keen on the same old, same old predictable food that gets served up in antiseptic chain eateries (I choose to use that word rather than restaurant because that's what most of them are.) What a pleasant change the Yearling is. As soon as you come through the door you know it is going to be different. And the food and service? Just excellent. This was a Saturday night so they were really busy and from the get go apologized that we may have to wait a little while beyond our reservation time, but they rushed to get us seated with the minimum wait time. We started with appetizers, fried green tomatoes, and the fish dip, both perfectly cooked and presented. My wife and I chose the blackened catfish for mains whilst our friends chose the duck and the venison. I have to say the catfish was some of the best I have tasted, and our friends were equally impressed with the duck and venison. We will definitely add this restaurant to our favorites list.More

My wife and I both ordered Shrimp Plate . The salad was outstanding and quality of food excellent . The shrimp was overcooked to the point of dry and rubbery . I had heard great things about The Yearling but don't think I'll go back....I don't know if cook was not working or some other reason . I mentioned this to waitress and she said she would let the kitchen Know.More

runny grits and cheese grouper dinner consisted of a fin and back bone with maybe two bites of fish. The server later realized the small portion and came out with some more fish but this was after everyone in our group was finished and leaving.

My husband and I made our first trip to The Yearling this weekend. We are very good cooks who rarely go out to eat. We were extremely pleased with the entire experience; friendly staff, good service, clean environment and someone in the kitchen who really...knew what the heck they were doing. We had the conch fritters, portobello mushrooms strips and the duck dinner. All of it was prepared to perfection. Highly recommend and looking forward to another visit soon.More

The Yearling exceeded my expectations. First off, it’s a neat place. It’s an old building with really interesting decor inside. It was fun to browse through all the displays and the shelves full of books! What really blew us away, though, was the food! We...figured even if the food was average, we would have enjoyed the experience of finally stopping in and seeing this famous restaurant. The food was anything but average. My hubby took a chance on the venison and -wow! You could cut it with a spoon. It came with a delicious gravy but the meat itself was so flavorful on its own, he used the gravy for his fries. I took a chance on the catfish. I love fish, but catfish has never excited me. This catfish was absolutely amazing. I had it broiled and it was so flaky and seasoned just perfectly. The cole slaw is obviously homemade, very creamy and no overwhelming vinegar. I was stuffed halfway through and hubby cleaned his plates. We were staying about 15 mins away and it was already about 3:30pm for our late “lunch” so I told my hubby since the food was so good and everything in the area closes so early, we’d better order something to-go so we have food to eat for “dinner” later if we get hungry at the hotel. We ended up getting a burger and a piece of key lime pie to go. I had my leftover catfish and fries to take with. As I expected, we got hungry around 8:30pm and heated up the to go food/leftovers. It was all STILL yummy! His buger was tasty and my leftovers were great even after being in the fridge for hours. The key lime pie is the best I have ever had and I have been in Florida all my life. We cannot wait to go back and bring other people with us!More

Last March 2020, we had planned on driving to the Yearling to try the Florida quisine. Then a little thing labeled Covid got in the way. Our friend Deb had not been out in a year. We all got the vaccine and the day trip...was on. We stopped first at the Rawlings state park for the Tour. Then on to lunch. We started with the Cracker sampler ($15.95) two items the Conch Fritters and Fried Green tomatoes the sauces were good. I originally wanted the gator, instead got the blacken red snapper ($18.95) and 2 sides. Very good. The wife got the Two Catfish Fillets ($17.50) and Deb the shrimp (OK I had not planned on doing a review, so didn't take a menu). The Yearling has the old Florida feel and I especially liked the books along the walls for sale.More

35 years ago I dined here & had the best fried alligator ever. Last trip was a couple of years ago & still the best ever. Don’t know if Willie Green is still playing the blues there, but some of the best (real) blues ever.
