Stopped by here with the hopes of getting some fried chicken to go fairly quickly. Looked over the online menu before going. We planned on getting some fried chicken, chicken-n-dumplings and waffles. Once at Walt's, I went up to the entrance to noticed that they...were ONLY allowing 3 patrons inside at a time. The inside is really tiny and felt uncomfortable during the pandemic. The ordering area was somewhat dingy and smelled stale. I waited in line behind another patron to order. Once at the window, the cashier informed me that they no longer served chicken-n-dumplings. One of our kids wanted that, so I tried to switch it to a kids chicken leg meal & was informed that they no longer offered kids meals since they did NOT have cups for the kids drinks. So, I ended up ordering 2 chicken legs, 2 breasts, a side of mashed potatoes and a waffle. AFTER placing my order, I was told that they had to heat up the waffle iron & that was going to take "about 10 minutes". Now, I was a bit irritated!! NO chicken-n-dumplings, NO kids meals & NOT prepared to serve up waffles. The food: The waffle was actually REALLY good. The kids said they were definitely worth the wait. I tried them and it was excellent. I hated to admit that they were actually worth the wait. Fried chicken was very good. It had excellent flavor, was tender and juicy with a flavorful crispy skin. Mashed potatoes on the other hand were gross. They taste odd. They have a sort of smoky flavor and a pasty texture. I would not recommend the potatoes at all. Overall, the fried chicken and waffles were excellent. I would return for those items alone based on taste. However, the service was absolutely terrible. They had no sense of urgency and were not very friendly. They were out of items or no longer served them. Prices were a tad high. Ordering area was dingy, dark and smelly. I actually waited outside for my food since it was a turn-off. Parking out front is very limited to what you can find on the street. I would recommend with some the cautions: be prepared for SLOW service and an unappealing building/food counter.More

Horrible customer service. Don’t order the fried flounder. It’s not seasoned. It’s not fresh looks like something out of a public school cafeteria lunch line. Mac and cheese not seasoned and not taste as well. We were told this was one of the best places...to eat in Wilmington. EAT THERE AT YOUR OWN RISK.More

Walts has the best fried chicken. Golden brown, crispy, juicy and packed full of flavor. Their sides can't be beat. Creamy Mac N Cheese, Collard Greens, Red Beans N Rice are my favorites. The Chicken N Waffles are good too. Call ahead for faster pickup....Then brace yourself as soon as you put that bag in the car your mouth will start to water!!More

The reviews brought me to this place and I was - expected for no-table - not disappointed. I ordered the fried shrimp with fries and both were good for this price. That the location doesn't have any tables to sit might not be optimal but...again for this price you can't really expect it. Oh at there's also no real parking reserved for the guest.More

New location in a shopping center so parking is no problem. Same quality chicken, with more staff and a larger kitchen area.

There is something in the breading/seasoning that makes you want to keep eating it, and eating it, until you are ready to burst. Tough area to park in so take a friend so someone can run in in case you need to move for traffic....Order "throw back" for extra crispy.More

2pc dark 1/2 waffle mashed potatoes and corn on the cob. The Claymont location is clean, courteous, and a fair price. The chicken was hot and crisp and not greasy. The waffle was good and the syrup was hot. The corn on the cob was...good, I was pleasantly surprised. The mashed potatoes, well, maybe I'll try a different side next time. Fake and thin, almost like a soup. The Claymont location is a little slow on the customer service although very friendly. The loyalty card is a nice extra.More

I could not wait to stop and try this chicken! I went to the Claymont location around 4:30 on a Thursday afternoon. I ordered 2 thighs and Mac and cheese. The chicken thighs were smaller then a hockey puck and so dry I almost broke...my front tooth. Tasted like they had been sitting around for a while. I threw it immediately in the trash. Please don't waste your time. Go the the Acme...hands down ten times better chicken then this establishment. Maybe I was just there on an off day and the cook wasn't their full time cook. I hope so or this place won't last at this location long.More

Stopped here on a whim as I heard a lot about this place from my co-workers, and it was close to work. I like good tasting chicken so I went here at lunch. Service was quick. I ordered a breast plate with fries. The chicken...tasted southern-style, crispy, seasoned, salty...pretty good. The fries were a bit soft, not crispy, and maybe were frozen refried fries. Overall a fair meal. Maybe not as good as KFC. I think the taste of their chicken was similar to Chinese take out.More

Walt's fried chicken is terrific! Crispy, not greasy outside and tender, juicy and flavorful inside. The chicken and dumplings remind me so much of my mother's, rolled and not the dropped biscuit type. Here again, the chicken is tender and flavorful. The sides we tried...included mac-n-cheese (very good), collard greens (a little too vinegary for my taste), and red beans & rice (also very good). Parking is a bit tight at Walt's Express, and the lines long sometimes, but it is well worth the trip!More

Walt's is a Wilmington staple for fried chicken. The chicken is hot and crispy with just enough season. We just each chicken and rolls - we don't need any sides...
