This was our first visit to Max’s Oyster Bar. Parking was convenient right behind the restaurant. We were pleasantly greeted and quickly seated in a comfortable booth. Our service was great and food delicious. The halibut was one of the best I’ve ever had. Though...bit pricey, well worth the cost. Definitely give this restaurant a try if you’re looking for fresh, well prepared seafood.More

I can’t tell from my meal of chicken as I was not really feeling great. The other three meals were great as usual. My rum was upstanding . This restaurant really knows it’s business and well worth the price with its attention to detail l...it’s been a anchor to West Hartfords dining scene for a long time. Never , ever regretted a meal or the atmosphere here.More

Very disappointing visit. We came fro drinks and lunch at the bar. Bartender named Elza, was incredibly rude and unfriendly. We couldn’t get out of there fast enough! Skipped lunch and headed to a different restaurant. Terrible.

Looking forward to our dinner at Max was such a disappointment. Started out with a nice Chardonnay followed by Oysters Rockefeller which were okay and then both my husband and I ordered the soft shell crab appetizer. The dinner soft shell was not available. The...plate arrived with a small soft shell crab sitting on top of mashed potatoes, who does that! Also on the plate were 4 HOT peppers. What a combination. Walking away after spending $120 we wished we had gone to Fleming’s. Meal was terrible but service was good. Hope we receive a reply to this review Richard and Donna Criscuolo, WoodburyMore

Our meal at the Oyster Bar was one of the best restaurant experiences ever for us. My Fisherman's Platter was perfection. The oysters were tender and crispy-coated. The shrimp and scallops retained their moisture inside crunchy coatings, and the fish tasted of the sea with...a lovely light brown outside. The french fries were fine--and the serving of fresh, creamy cole slaw was large enough to be noticed (unusual!). My wife is a notoriously small eater. She ordered the sea scallop dinner and cleaned her plate, leaving me only one scallop and no vegetables. She glowed about her meal. Service was prompt but not rushy, and our server stayed attentive but did not crowd us. We sat outside, a great spot to people watch in West Hartford.More

Visited with a friend while consignment shopping. We got the high rise from the raw bar and it was absolutely delicious. Great oyster selection and the Asian calamari salad was fantastic! It was the perfect amount and both of us left with happy full bellies....We also loved that the outdoor seating was dog friendly!More

I went there for a quick dinner by myself. Sat at the bar and the bartender was friendly, straight to the point and made good recommendations. Would definitely go there again specially with friends.

We enjoyed our outdoor dining experience as Max's. The restaurant had a good reputation and food lived up to the expectations. We elected not to eat inside; the weather was great, conducive to outdoor dining. The interior did have that traditional " old school" with...dark wood walls and partitions, red leather upholstered seating, nautical prints on the walls. The bar had a long counter running along most of the wall on the right. The oyster and shellfish were on display beyond the end of the bar. Service was prompting and water glasses filled and refilled quickly.More

Everything was just right. The oysters that we had for appetizers were superb. The entrees were equally good as was the creme brulee dessert. Our waiter was attentive and professional and did a great job. I don't have a single complaint regarding my experience at...this restaurant.More

Christmas Eve 5:30 Reservation: What was once an exceptional restaurant in downtown West Hartford is no longer an option. Noticed right away the floors were dirty, and the dress code is no longer being enforced. Sad. After our salads and appetizers were cleared - crickets....Never saw our meals for close to an hour, and when they arrived the food was not hot - warm at best. Lots of apologies and useless excuses, but what became clear when we finally received our meals was the kitchen is no longer functioning properly and is not making high quality food. The fish was not fresh, steak meal presentations were that of Chili’s or Applebee’s, and the rest was average. Not only were we extremely disappointed on a special night out, but $200 later (no alcohol) we felt like we were fleeced. Never again.More

God bless Max!! Even in a pandemic, with social isolation modifications in place, they over-achieve with the service, the food, the extras— always a pleasure!!! Ian provided impeccable service—friendly, quick and memorable. Knew the products inside and out, ample facility with suggestions, engaging and conversational,...entertaining to boot. We started with the perfectly prepared tuna tartare, drizzled with a tangy, slightly spicy sauce and served with light, flash fried crisps that enhanced not detracted This was followed by a wonderful clam chowder, creamy with lots and lots of clams and small bacon pieces that just made it even better. Outstanding! For my entrée, I chose the tuna over Asian noodles and vegetables— I am terribly picky about my tuna, and I like it extremely rare, and of course Max took care of me. The dish was wonderfully prepared, the tuna perfection, and the complex underlying flavors perfect accents to the subtle tuna. One of my party thoroughly enjoy her scallops and the other went carnivore on us, and tried the medium rare fillet — she was suitably impressed, and ordered one to go for her husband. Just to sample the dish, we tried the macaroni and cheese with lobster side dish; the lobster was freshly steamed, plentiful in amount and deliciously nestled in the creamy mac & cheese— I was originally concerned that it would be too rich, however the complex flavors were balanced well and my sampling of it was memorable. Drinks, and wine were kept flowing on demand. We were treated to complementary Prosecco and small chocolate cake pops drizzled with Caramel— A perfect finish to a delightful meal. Nice to have a staple you can count onMore

Parking is free in West Hartford on Sunday. I have been able to find street parking or lot parking, but, as noted above, you have to pay at the kiosk -- $3 for two hours.
