My review title says it all! Absolute best of both New England clam chowda and scallops! Stop here after every beach trip from spring to fall! AND last but not least, the freaking best FF on the planet! No exaggeration, thin and hot and crispy! Soooo good!

The restaurant is right on the water, with lots of outdoor seating and shade. It's only open in the summer. And people in the area look forward to it every year. The fries are shoestring and delicious, seafood is good. Hotdogs and burgers are great. They also have ice cream and milkshakes.

The chili cheese dogs are the best you'll find anywhere. The fried chicken sandwich is also very good. Parking in their lot is dangerous because you have to back out onto Pequot Avenue, a busy thoroughfare. Your best bet is to park in the municipal lot across the street. It is free and totally safe. Parking on Pequot or the... More

Fred's is one of the ways you know you are in New London. Nothing fancy, simple grilled burgers, hot dogs, fries, onion rings, milkshakes, etc. generally good quality affordable, and fast service. A lot of its appeal is its waterfront location, and not much else competing with it. I'm sure I have gone there 75-100 times over the last 30... More

We've been going to Fred's Shanty since my son was in College. It is within walking distance of Mitchell College and we go often for a walk along the water and stop in for a great hotdog! Great memories at the Shanty?

I stopped in on Saturday and asked for fried whole belly clams. Woman behind the counter said they were out of them (at noon?). I ordered a clam chowder and fried clam strips. The order came to $10.85. The clam chowder was a "milk chowder" at best. A few potatoes and almost no hint of clams. Drank half and dumped... More

Great food, laid back casual picnic table atmosphere. The prices were reasonable and the portions large. The fried scallops and clam chowder were awesome!

We ended up at Fred's when Two Little Fish in Westerly ran out of food on Monday (Labor Day Holiday). Very reasonably priced, you can bring a family here and not break the bank. Nice outdoor covered seating. The shrimp, fries and coleslaw were awesome. Love the Fried Pickles!!

Fred's Shanty is a casual seafood shack ... very casual. Read the menu board posted above the ordering window, place your order, wait a bit, pick it up, and take a seat overlooking New London harbor. The view is terrific and there's plenty of seating. The fish sandwich was 2 pieces of fried seafood on a decent burger bun with... More

Good dogs, great fries (actually the best I've had!), good scallops and fish. Everything fresh, sit outside. Perfect spot for after the beach or an early evening jaunt. Inexpensive, delivers exactly what they advertise. And ALWAYS busy!
