What was once a bright, sunny, colorful, unique restaurant with reliable and a delicious menu - has now become a dark, loud space with disappointing food. This 'new Gates' has a much reduced menu from that of the previous owners. We decided on calimari (overdone and chewy) and pizza (soggy). What a shame a restaurant with such a great reputation... Gates has been a venerable institution in New Canaan. Tonight my wife and I tried out the new iteration. The interior has been gutted. There is an open kitchen and the overall impression is of a much more open space. Overall, I would consider this a "wash." However, somehow the restaurant seemed smaller. The service was excellent - prompt, efficient... More

Gates is truly a part of New Canaan. It has been around forever and the food is still great! Wonderful salads, burgers, you name it. The bar is still great, just love the feel of the place. Always crowded, but you always get taken care of by a great staff.

This restaurant was hidden to begin with/combined with Tequila Mockingbird and now no longer exists. The food was average and at the time, the menu on grubhub was incorrect. Would not recommend going, especially since it literally closed overnight.

This place has closed however it is going to reopen in the fall of 2015 with a new menu and possibly an open kitchen format.

This is a long standing New Canaan reliable. It's not "special" but it is very good. The lobster bisque is SOOO good that you can get it in 12 oz containers to go and they sell a lot of it. BTW-If you order a bloody mary ask what kind of vodka they will use, the default is absolut peppar which... More

Good food is served by an upbeat and positive staff. Parking can be a problem but that is true for the entire area. They have a nice Sunday Brunch.

We love Gates and have been coming here for 20 years! It is a staple in New Canaan. The atmosphere is bright and lively; the food is great and the staff awesome. The menu has a mediterranean bent. The salads and sandwiches are yummy.

I don't like my utensils to touch the bare table when I eat so after putting my napkin on my lap I had my utensils on a small plate. The waiter said to me "what's going on with this contraption over here". Why is this his business?? Ordered French onion soup that had hard stale bread in it! Couldn't even... More

Try the Sunday brunch . It is great. I have been coming here for 27 years. The menu has changed with the times as well as the decor. The staff is always professional. Well run.
