Tucked in Hartford's southwest area on the corner of Hillside Avenue and White Street, the Nutshell is reminiscent of a bygone era. The staff projects a sincere sense of wanting to make sure its patrons receive the right amount of attention without being intrusive. This is a great place to gather with friends for drinks at the bar or dining... More

The Nutshell Café has been in the neighborhood for many years as a pub and more recently as a Portuguese restaurant. Small, cozy, full bar and parking is a challenge but you can always find parking on the street. The bar is busy with several TV's. The owner is the overall Chef and manager of the kitchen. Service is friendly.... More

A delightful, exciting find while visiting Hartford. Small, quaint little pub with seafood and Portuguese cuisine. A bit pricy but delicious food. Thoroughly enjoyed. Portuguese rolls fresh & warm. Service a bit slow but friendly server. Linguicia scrumptious. Salads hearty. Everything was delicious. Parking was a challenge. Hidden treasure in an "off the chart" neighborhood.

This is a little gem in the South End of Hartford that's been around forever and was a popular neighborhood "off-the-beaten path" pub in the 90s -- but it was never particularly known for its cuisine. When I saw their the menu now features Portugese food, I decided to take a little trip down memory lane after a couple of... More

The snow is piled high everywhere. We start with "Mr. Turner" at the Palace17, a superbly made biopic of the 19th century British artist. We had decided to eat Portugese and opted for the Nutshell on White Street. We lucked out as I hadn't made a reservation, called when we got out of the movie. We walk in and know we are... More

I have eaten at this restaurant many times and have yet to be disappointed. The food and prices are reasonable and the waitstaff is very pleasant and nice. It's a tiny cozy little eatery with lots of character. Lots of great seafood plates and traditional Portuguese cuisine. Recommend the Bica with a shot of beirao at the end!!

Get passed the locals at the bar to find some of the best food I've ever eaten. Everything is made fresh and from scratch. The bartender Nick is the best bartender I've come across. He's attentive, friendly and funny. The servers are very nice and very helpful. Get the grilled shrimp and squid. It's the best!

If you are looking for simple Portuguese food, this is the place to come. Big portions. Located in a residential area with a neighborhood feeling, small bar area that features an expresso machine and Port wines

I love little gems that are as far from the chain-restaurant experience as you can get. The Nutshell is indeed such a gem and Portuguese food is where they shine. I've known this place for many years, dating back to the late 70s/early 80s and its life as a local pub with backgammon boards wood-burned into the tables, dart boards... More

This place has had a few owners since the Irish Bar days and now is a bar/dining area and a separate dining room. Updated and much fresher inside, but more of a local restaurant feel. Very solid food and good prices. Our teens loved the Portuges rolls, Chicken Soup and then the steak, fries and rice - nicely prepared and... More
