We enjoy coming here regularly either on date night or out with friends. Would be good with the kids too but we save these special places for our getaway time. Food is spectacular from comfort foods to specialties.

We are local and have enjoyed South Lane Bistro many times and always enjoyed our meals. Sadly we were not impressed with the meals on Monday, Dec. 30th. We arrived early with most tables still empty. The appetizer special of Tempura Shrimp resembled and tasted...more like a heavily beer battered strong fish than a lighter tempura. The swordfish sandwich special was also a disappointing with a very small portion of fish. Although the Papri Chaat Nachos were tasty, most of the chips burned, as if baked too close to the broiler. The Thai Coconut Pumpkin Soup special was served very hot and was tasty. The Steak & Noodle salad was ok, but had very little of the salad, just noodles. We hope this was just an off night and will try South Lane again at a less busy time of the year.More
We were in town and needed to grab a bite before heading home. Parked our car and headed to a restaurant to check out the offerings. Looking further down the street we spotted the South Lane Bistro and peeked in- the warm inviting atmosphere and...a quick look at the menu made us pick this spot over a few others in the immediate area. What did we think? Ambiance and vibe was great- casual, relaxed but with a goal to please patrons. Asked for recommend for dinner and picked the Salmon Entree and the Meatloaf Special. It started with a fresh salad that seemed picked from a garden outside. The salmon had a great char with a moist, tender center, accompanied by grilled asparagus and orzo- light, fresh and delicious. The meatloaf, served with mashed potatoes and broccoli was better than I make, and we LOVE mine. The serving size and presentation were awe inspiring. Kept spying a cake sitting on the bar and even though we decided there wasn't room anywhere to put desert, we split a slice of carrot cake that was light, airy, not too sweet and completely removed from the plate within minutes. DELICIOUS! We will be back. Not because we ended up in Guilford on business and were hungry and needed to eat but rather because we drove an hour specifically to eat at the South Lane Bistro. It's a destination worth driving for.More
We ate there while staying in the area on business. It was a weeknight, and we didn't have a reservation, and although it was very busy, we did get a table right away. Service started out a bit slow, but after things started moving, it...was fine. They were out of the special for the night (and the server didn't know that when she took our order - not so good), but the food we had was very good. One of our steaks was over-cooked (ordering rare is always risky), but overall I did like the place. We sat on the outside, plastic-covered (it was February!) porch, but we were plenty warm. Overall, our experience was uneven, but we'd still go back.More
Always love going to South Lane whether to grab burgers and frits, sit by the fire enjoying the specials of the night, or order drinks and appetizers at the bar.
The atmosphere of this place is really cool. The food has been hit or miss. My wife loves it there but there are other places i would rather go.
Had a short time available due to restraints wirh babysitter. Called ahead to make a reservation. Took our name and said table available. Would have gone elsewhere if we weren’t able to get a reservation. Arrived less than 10 mins later (we had said we...would be there within 15 mins) and were told our table was no longer available even though they did have our reservation. It would be a at least a 30 minute wait. No apology whatsoever. Called back later and spoke to owner. Again no apology. Was told they didn’t take reservations for tables for 2 and acted like I was crazy for claiming otherwise. Not sure why they would say otherwise on the phone. Can see from other reviews that this is an ongoing issue. F for customer service. And shame on the owner for the entire experience.More

If you are looking for a good meal in a cozy spot, look no further than the South Lane Bistro. Just steps from historic Guilford green, the food never disappoints. Nice, varied menu, good beer selection. Friendly staff.
We arrived at 8:10 Friday evening, no line, tables available, room at the bar. Nice looking place. Semi-open kitchen. Employees buzzing about, took a few minutes to be acknowledged. Finally, eye contact & be with you in a minute. Hostess asked if we would like...to sit at the bar to have a drink while waiting for a table. (We noticed there is no foot rail, we are middle aged with physical limits & my boyfriend is a tall, big guy) We asked to sit at a the table in the corner, which was set. “It’s not ready.” “May we sit there until it IS ready?” We politely asked. Did we have to explain we wouldn’t be comfortable at the high bar chairs, with no bar foot rest. The table was set, no one did anything else to it. As we looked at the Culturally diversified menu, it made us wonder, what are they really good at? We ordered corn chowder, sliders (great quality meat used) and a California BLT, all very good tasting. I guess they were in a hurry to close because the waitress dropped the check without offering dessert & coffee. When she returned, I asked if dessert is served. Seemingly surprised, she brought the dessert menu & said next time we should save room. We had room this time! Got the feeling we were only welcome on their terms, maybe because they’re only open four hours a day, according to Google.More
