My best friend and I spent a week in the Rockies on vacation. A day in Vail was a highlight of the trip. Research led us to this restaurant for a special evening. We splurged and reserved a gondola dinner. We arrived 10 minutes early...and asked if there was a place to wait. The hostess, who we later learned is the owner, was quite annoyed that we were early. We waited and were then led to the gondola. Our server arrived, very harried. She quickly went through the basics of the fondue dinner which included only a broth fondue. We asked if cheese fondue was included and received a lecture about this expectation. We were happy to order cheese fondue, and eventually did, after getting a defensive response. We ordered a drink which arrived 10 minutes later and that is the last we saw of our server. The food badly needed salt; we wanted a second drink; and our small table was filled with empty glasses, menus, and empty plates. No one ever came to clean up or ask if we needed anything. We finally flagged down a busboy for salt. Our server delivered it and left so quickly, we didn’t have time to order a drink or ask her to clean away some items. We finally flagged down another server and asked for the manager. Our server appeared 15 minutes later and asked if everything was okay. We have her our honest feedback about how neglectful our service was. She apologized and offered us a schnapps on the house. She seemed quite embarrassed by the poor service, but blamed the fact that the restaurant was so busy. When we left, we felt we needed to inform the manager about our experience - a $350 meal deserves better attention. We asked the bartender if the manger was available. He informed us, rather rudely, that he and his sister are the manager/owners. We asked if he had a moment and he said NO and pointed to his sister, who was the annoyed hostess we encountered when we arrived. We approached her and asked if we might offer some feedback. I wish I had a photo of the expression on her face! She was ready to be defensive. We first told her that food was delicious. She gave no response. It was as if she had encountered many unhappy customers and just didn’t want to hear it. We described the service; her response was that 1) they were very busy in a tone that implied we should just understand that; 2) our server was very experienced so we must be wrong; 3) she would ask the server to confirm our feedback. In other words, we were totally dismissed and she was not in the least interested in our comments. We chose to walk out at that point (after paying our bill, of course). This restaurant’s food is good (not extraordinary). The interior is charming. This brother/sister owners (whose father purchased the restaurant from the founder for them) are not equipped to run a restaurant on a busy night. They seem completely uninterested in customer experience only in turning tables and closing checks. I would not waste my time or money on this restaurant since there are many good ones in Vail!More

Perfect place to cozy up on a snowy winter night. We were seated indoors in a roomy booth near the entrance (loved the heater below the bench). Ordered the beef tartare to start and loved the presentation of that - on a big board- as...well as the Caesar salad - served in a big wooden (flour?) scoop. How do they store all these serving pieces! Entrees were the short rib and pork shank which were both tasty. We’ll be back for sure!More

So much fun!!!! My husband and I did the Gondola Experience and it was PERFECT!!! The hostess gave us a warm welcome when we arrived. The gondola is cozy and comfortable. It’s heated and there is a music box where you can Bluetooth and play...your own music. The way it works is there is a salad ready for you to eat when you arrive, and then you get to cook veggies and/or meat either in a broth or on a grill. It’s similar to Japanese hibachi. There is cheese that you can put in trays under the grill to make raclette and dip homemade bread into. The waitress hit the right balance between being attentive but also letting us relax and enjoy the gondola. I’m vegetarian and was worried the grilling or broth format would be difficult but Alpenrose went above and beyond to makes sure I had options. I love this restaurant and their attention to detail. It’s one of the best in the Valley! Thank you for a fun night out!!!More

Went in for lunch for a party of 3. It's been a long time since I was last here and I don't care for the current location - restaurant is a lot smaller than the one I remember a decade ago. We sat in the...covered porch...which isn't kept very warm. Several tables asked the staff to bring blankets which they did. Prices are high and portions are small. We started with $7 hot chocolate. Bill for 3 with tip and just the hot chocolate and water to drink was $125. Atop that there is no free parking in Vail. It cost $45 to park for 2 hrs in the garage closest to the restaurant. The food was average quality - I've had much better German food at many other places.More

We enjoyed our late après-ski lunch at the Alpenrose with its super charming and cozy - seriously gemütlich - interior setting. Food was authentic and delicious. We had Schnitzel and Käsefondue, Tomato soup & Pretzels. (Käsefondue is usually not served with Pretzel bread but it...worked well). We’re planning to go back today for their cakes and desserts. They looked GREAT!More

The atmosphere was great: we loved the woodwork, the German music, the staff costumes, and the general attempt to make this feel like a German restaurant. We also appreciated that all staff were wearing masks. Unfortunately, as others mentioned, we were in the porch area...that was cold (we were thankful to have a few layers on). It seems like they were able to reseat some groups inside and staff offered blankets to some guests. It wasn't impossible to eat out there, but it wasn't going to be a warm experience; their heaters didn't seem to do much. The food wasn't great except that the weisswurst was one of the best we've ever had in our lives. The pretzel that came with it was over-baked and bland (as was the side of cheese I got with it) and the rest of the dinner was typical German food, nothing particular special. The wine list was abysmal -- definitely should have brought a bottle or committed to beer instead.More

We were seated on an outdoor porch that had been vaguely winterized. It was 12 degrees outside and the porch is not a suitable dining area when the temperatures are this low. I said I was cold as did EVERY OTHER TABLE around us. The...waiter who, bless him, apologized and pointed out one of the absolutely necessary heaters near us was broken. The table directly behind us was moved inside after more than one request. They brought all the people outside blankets and most elected to remain in winter parkas for their dinner. Which, of course, was cold in minutes. The problem is easily solved but the ownership is too profit oriented to spend a few dollars correcting the problem or closing the OUTDOOR area when it’s ice cold. No one. NO ONE should need a blanket to eat dinner. EVER!! I talked with the manager which was a complete waste of time. She immediately was adversarial and ended up chasing me out of the restaurant and accosting me verbally in the street in front of my wife and 6 yr old child. I tried to get her away from my family to “finish” the conversation but she insisted on talking a pile of smack in front of my family prompting my wife to intervene and demand she discontinue her assault. We ended up literally running away to an Uber. That woman needs to work in a different environment. So sad how terrible people in the service industry have become. Shame on you owners for everything that occurred tonight! Oh, I bet they say we booked that table. We did! They had no business seating anyone there. Period. The product we endured was not remotely commensurate with the balance of their offering!!!!More

We wandered in for a late lunch without a reservation and were seated promptly inside. The decor is lovely and quaint with lots of personality. Server was friendly though could've been a bit more attentive. We started with the pretzel which was good with a...wonderful presentation. The Mountain Mule cocktail was great and also very well presented. My husband ordered a double vodka & cranberry - for $31 - double charge for the vodka which isn't unusual, but then a separate $8 for the juice.... wow. Entrees included the pesto pasta, carbonara, and the schnitzel - all very good. We definitely enjoyed the meal and the atmosphere!More

A few days before My reservation at Alpenrose I received a phone call. The rep told me that they had incorrectly booked 50 reservations on their reservation platform and would need to reschedule all of them. I was driving so I took the person’s phone...number and called her back when I got to my hotel. No answer so I left a message. I called again the following day. No answer. I waited and tried the next day and even the following day. No answer. I attempted the main line. No answer. Needless to say I was very upset at such a complete lack of communication, after the restaurant itself cancelled my reservation. Terrible customer service.More

My husband and I had dinner here and you would have thought we were in 2 different restaurants. For an appetizer, I had gazpacho--hardly German, but very good. My husband had the Caprese Salad (again, hardly German and not so good). The tomatoes had no...flavor (they should be ripe and tasty at this time) and there was no basil on the salad. My husband mentioned this and they removed it from our bill. For a main course, I had the rosti with tomato, ham and cheese on top and it was delicious. My husband had the pork schnitzel with spaetzle. The pork was good (not great), but was a tiny little portion. Most schnitzels fill a plate! There was also spaetzle on the plate that was extremely dry and tasteless. Most people serve spaetzle with cheese on top to liven it up, but this restaurant did not We shared an apple strudel for dessert and it was very good.More

Really good. Our party got 2 gazpachos (tasty mild and not overly chunky), pretzel (huge), bratwurst (mild with skin that’s easy to snap through with a very fresh yummy mustard), the sauerkraut was finely sliced and mild and probably best I’ve tried and converted one...in our party to say he now liked sauerkraut, the smoked salmon with potato pancake (like a nice tasty pancake shaped hashbrown) was tasty, schnitzel which I was told was very good and a melon salad (watermelon, feta and mint) which was refreshing in the hot weather. We ordered to go but the seating was very good with fur throws on seats, lots of flowers and very charming. Surprised I had not been here before. Enjoyed it. Server very friendly and fast service.More
