For Silverton, Handlebars Restaurant & Saloon is pretty good. It's a meat and potatoes heavy menu, although they had Colorado trout if you like fish. The portions are huge. Everything comes with a bread roll, mashed potatoes and the like. The menu is way too extensive for everything to be totally fresh and homemade, especially given the difficulty of getting fresh ingredients to Silverton. A little bit of effort in the kitchen and this could be a lot better. Likewise, some of the staff are pretty rough around the edges. Some staff, including the bartender who appeared to be the manager, did NOT wear face masks. Many guests didn't wear face masks either. The best part of the menu is the homemade peach cobbler. In terms of entrees, I'd stick to burgers and the steak. It's tough to screw those things up.

Not only was the food great, but the service and the atmosphere were excellent! Our server had worked there over 15 years and she was super! I had the mushroom Swiss cheese burger and it was huge and delicious. Their fries are some of the best I've ever had and don't miss their homemade peach cobbler for dessert!!! My husband had the elk burger and it was excellent as well. If you'll be in the area, make time to stop and eat here. As another reviewer stated, the Sam Elliot look alike who seats you just fits right in with the atmosphere and makes you feel right at home in this really cool little mining town.

A group of 6 of us recently visited Silverton and spent 2 nights there. When we checked in to our AirBNB a neighbor recommended Handlebars as a good place to eat dinner. We went to dinner there that evening. We had to wait to be seated due to them being short handed. After we were seated we were greeted by our server, John. John immediately made us feel at home. He made recommendations for dinner and laughed and joked with us the whole time. He originally told us that his name was Juanita. So from that time on we called him JJ (Juanita/John). We had a great time and the food, all of it was excellent. John definitely made it a memorable experience. We decided immediately to eat there the next evening also. Our server the next evening introduced himself as Sam, he looked just like Sam Elliott. Sam’s name was actually, Andrew. Andrew was just as good at making us feel welcome as John did. He made excellent recommendations for our dinner meal. Andrew laughed and joked with us just as John did. The food was excellent as before. The whole atmosphere was great, but our servers, John and Andrew made it a most memorable experience.

We stopped here because it looked fun. It ended up being one of the worst restaurants we have ever patronized, anywhere. While the elk and buffalo burgers (about $19) were okay and clearly fresh, the burgers were overcooked and the silverware was the cheapest we have ever seen. The knife wouldn't even cut the tomato and onions. The waitress was absolutely horrible. She never asked how our meal was, never offered drink refills, or dessert. Her and three other waitresses stood behind our table the whole time gossiping, complaining about colleagues, talking about getting drunk and what they were going to do after the restaurant closed for the season. Menus were filthy and not cleaned between customers. Likewise, the ketchup and other condiments weren't sanitized between customers. I never saw staff at the bar wash their hands. Everyone we encountered at our hotel and elsewhere in Silverton had the same experience as us. Do yourself a favor. Avoid this restaurant. You would be better off buying Clif bars from the gas station.

In town on restful vacation. Reminiscing from 20 yrs ago when we went over the mountain in a jeep and stuck in dark snow storm. Food and seevice still great even with covid mandates. The owner was there even helping & taking drink orders for the customers. We started out the meal with 2 margaritas in mason jars that were made just right. We ordered grilled chicken salad and beef taco salad for the main courses. Very pretty presentation and plenty to fill the plate. We were offered cobbler but couldn't eat another bite. Hopefully it wont be 20 more.

This is a perfect place to eat a $4 hamburger for $19 and watch Texas tourists get fleeced. At least the server was honest — “I have too many tables so I’m just going to give you your own pitcher of water.” Nice ambience if you’re into lots and lots and lots of taxidermy. OK service if your standards are low.

The veggie salad with a grilled chicken breast was huge and very tasty. Our friend kept raving how huge and delicious her elk burger was. The ribs and a prime rib french dip were also very good. Peach cobbler a la mode was a great finisher to a great meal. I would have given 5 stars had the waitress not shown her annoyance when we asked before she took our orders if we could have separate checks. She was however attentive and a very good waitress.

We came here after hiking all day so we were starving. Had a couple of beers/cocktails then had chicken pot pie which was delicious, but wish I’d had the fries or mash with it instead of salad. We also had the green chili burger which was excellent. And another burger. The burgers were excellent. We then had the peach cobbler with Ice Cream which was lovely l. But took the whipped cream off the top. All on a great mean for everyone (4 of us) interesting bar with all kinds of decor. Seating available outside also. Wear you mask on till you are seated.

Gave it a 4 because it was Open and friendly. Food was good, fr onion soup good, Not salty, chicken pot pie was very small for the price (18.95) and hardly any chicken. My tuna melt ($18)was okay, came out room temperature. So food was passable, but overpriced for the quality. Gave Handlebar Saloon a 4 for being Open, not many were in Silverton on May 23, and for the happy, friendly atmosphere. A real saloon!

My family and I have been eating at Handlebars for 20+ years and it is one of our favorite restaurants anywhere. To really appreciate Handlebars you have to love it for what it is: a dive bar in a small mountain town that serves well- prepared and hearty bar food. Nothing inventive, trendy or complicated. But, given that, the food is great! The buffalo meat chili is maybe the best chili I’ve ever had, and the fried chicken is equally outstanding. The ribs and burgers are excellent, too. And save room for dessert! The dozens and dozens of mounted and stuffed animals all over the room are either fascinating or horrifying, depending upon your point of view. A great place to unwind and eat too much after a day on the Jeep trails or the train. Highly recommended!

We enjoyed the authentic feel of this restaurant. Each of our party enjoyed our meal. We were impressed with the customer service we received. When we expressed that one of our meals was a bit dry, the server returned a few minutes later with a new meal cooked perfectly. Not many restaurants would do that these days.

The menu says Handlebar-size sandwiches and showed a picture of a big stacked sandwich. When my BLT came, it was disappointing because I expected a big sandwich. It was good (how could it not be with bacon?) but was like a sandwich you would make and eat at your kitchen table..😕 Everyone else said their food was good too. However... Sherrys Famous Peach Cobbler was fantastic.

With such a wide variety of American dishes it is commendable that three different entrees were all were perfectly cooked. From the Prime Rib to the Rainbow Trout (practically from the most to the least expensive) they couldn't have been prepared any better. Our waitress was excellent in all categories. We'll be back.

We ate here for lunch and it was very busy because the train had just let off. But we got a table and the staff was quick with the menus and water. I ordered a hamburger and my husband ordered a Rubin with the cream of green chili soup that was delicious. Even though it was busy we got our food relatively quickly. The restaurant is decorated with lots of stuff so there is lots to look at and there is outside seating.

We love Handlebars, we make a point to go every time we visit the area. This time, we had the chicken fried steak, the green chile burger, and the green chile potato skins. Everything was amazing, as usual. We were there after the lunch rush and were seated right away. The service was fast and friendly. It's fun to read the signs and look at all the quirky decor while you're waiting for your food. Highly recommend. We did notice that they were closed on Tuesdays, not sure if that is true for the summer season, but we were there right when all the area businesses were changing their hours for the summer. Worth checking before you go, especially if driving over from Durango or Ouray.
