Whenever I'm on the Western Slope of Colorado I always try to swing by Big B's, which is on the outskirts of Paonia about an hour from Grand Junction. It's actually closer to Paonia despite having Hotchkiss as a mailing address.
Anyways, it's a great roadside farm market with cafe, special events and, of course, local everything (wine, fruit, etc). Prices aren't cheap but everything is quality.
My only complaint besides a poor bathroom situation is the wine.
None of the staff seem to know anything about the local West Elks AVA or nearby Grand Valley AVA wine they sell. The selection is pretty good. I don't know why Big B's or the wineries don't print wine display cards to tell customers about the wineries and the wine that is being offered since none of the staff seem to know or care to know. I also don't understand why Big B's never has boxes or cases for bottles. I just spent $200 on wine and would have appreciated a proper box.

Don't let the "barn" and playground fool you, they have serious eats here. My wife selected the pulled pork sandwich with sweet potato waffle fries and I had the special steak sandwich with caramelized onions and blue cheese crumbles and melted provolone. Portions here could be shared, they do not scrimp on the quality and quantity of ingredients. Another must for anyone going thru this area.

I've been stopping at Big B's for years whenever I'm in the Montrose--Delta--Grand Junction area of Colorado.
Outside of a liquor store, they used to have one of the best selections of local wine from the West Elk AVA wineries. I visited in September 2024 for the first time since October 2023. The wine selection has been reduced and the selection is so-so. You're probably better off hitting up some of the nearby tasting rooms or one of the two liquor stores in Paonia. Both have good selections of Colorado wine.
Anyways besides the wine, they have a decent farm market with assorted produce and food. Most of it local or regional. There's also a cafe with sandwiches, salads and the like. Everyone in my group liked the orchard salad. Prices are reasonable.
On weekends, Big B's can get busy with limited parking due to concerts, outdoor events, etc.
My only complaint are the staff. They always have youngish (20-something) hippie-type girls that always seem to hate their job and provide no service, like giving you a proper bag or box with wine bottles. I don't know if staff get free lodging in exchange for work, but the staff leave a lot to be desired for.
For better service and a more extensive food menu, try the nearby Berg Harvest Mercantile and Cafe in Paonia.

We tried to check out Big B’s for a sandwich or something for dinner and to buy some produce. They were hosting some live music and directed us to park in an adjacent field. My husband dropped us off and went to park where directed. They wanted $20 just to park, which is ridiculous. My husband pulled over to the side so that he could call me and ask about the menu and whether I wanted to stay to eat. He had left enough room for at least 3 cars or more to pull through and there was no one behind him. Despite the fact that he wasn’t blocking anyone, the parking attendant started yelling at him that he needed to move and get out of the way, that he was blocking the drive. He had a terrible attitude and was unbelievably rude. Apparently, they need to give customer service lessons to their employees. This small town is obviously trying to build up their tourist trade and yelling at us isn’t the way for us to want to come back to this area or give a positive report to friends from home. Tourists, avoid Big B’s. They are rude and not friendly to out-of-towners. Yes, he knew that we were from out of town because he yelled, “Hey Texas!” at him when he yelled. Okay, no problem. We took our TX money down the road to 133 Burger and they were fantastic!

We apologize for your terrible experience. We've talked to that employee and he feels badly for overreacting. He thought that your husband was trying to park there (which is surprisingly not an uncommon occurrence.)
In regards to the $20 fee, we charge by the car load for our Friday night events, rather than ticketing each person. The money goes to pay for the band and to support the partnering local non-profit for the evening.
We're glad that 133 Burger was able to treat you right - they do a good job!

I expected a market that says "Delicious Orchards" to have a greater level of supply and selection of fruit available from which to select. We were eager to purchase some but the sparse selection, and that which they did have, had fruit flies buzzing around. Perhaps authentic in that way?

I've enjoyed Big B's products from various locations in other states and was quite surprised to see the actual production orchard on a recent road trip. I was even more surprised to see that it was quite the "happening" place. So I stopped by and wasn't disappointed! Great food from their café, quirky laid-back atmosphere, adorable shop, and of course, wonderful beverages. They had a pleasant outdoor location to enjoy the food/beverages (and maybe music). Also, it was fun watching the youth enjoy themselves and having such a great time. I wish I'd known about this place when my daughter was younger for she would've enjoyed a place like this (while mom would've been picking fruit). I didn't give this a rating of five, because the counter staff wasn't friendly and seemed annoyed when I asked if a particular item was gluten free.

There's really not much here. I guess there's a great playground for kids? I'm really disappointed we drove an hour for this.
Also, I'm really concerned about the health codes being violated in the kitchen. I could see workers touching food without gloves that was being served, people with long hair not in hair ties, etc.
Not worth the trip.

We had been trying to get here for a couple of years and were hoping Big B's would live up to our expectations. It exceeded them!! We camped in the apple orchard and the stars were amazing. The only recommendation I have here would be to not camp at the very back of the orchard camping area. There is some water beyond the fence that isn't moving much and smells a bit. There was live music both Friday and Saturday nights with great bands. It was a very family and dog friendly environment. The hard ciders were good and it was fun to get a sampler. ALL of the food we had (and we had several things over the two days we were there) was really good. There were apples and all sorts of produce for sale. We'll definitely come back some day.

I reside in the area and my family was here visiting so I thought I would take them some where unique. They loved it and they are city folk. it's not a fancy sit down service restaurant but more of help yourself which they really enjoyed. You can sit inside or outside and the eats are not bad at all. Nice selection, barbecue with cider beer a hit with the fam. Live band entertains in the evening. This is a great place for families. A ton of things for kids to do. I would recommend this place to even the most stuffiest person. It will certainly liven them up.

We stopped by this place as there weren't too many options in Paonia due to a motorcycle rally (great event by the way not complaining. Some really cool older bikes and great people). The food was ok for me, a brisket sandwich, but my son and his girlfriend really enjoyed the tacos.
The music was very good and it was a very laid back vibe.

I play Keith Richards in our Stones cover band, Emotional Rescue. We just played there again last saturday. Wanted to say this place is always so fun, AND the staff is so great, they take care of us. Jessie was so cool.
So.... thanks to Big B's for having us again!

Beautiful outdoor spot if you want to hang out outside. Good food. Could use some more vegetarian options.

Wow! So much fun for couples, friends, or families! Camping, orchards and gardens, ponds for camping and picnicking, swings like no others, and great food and cider! The owners really love their land and developing it for everyone’s enjoyment, for sure! Don’t miss this stop!

This place has good and bad. It reminds me of a hippie restaurant and food store from the 70’s. Often lots of flies, lackadaisical service, hard to read menu on the wall and strange menu selections. They say they are vegetarian friendly, but sandwiches were almost all meat. The usual veggie burger for example, plus some salads and a veggie burrito.
I had a veggie burrito and it was sort of ok and there was lots of it. The next morning I had food poisoning and it got worse by late morning. I couldn’t eat until late in the evening and had hours of rapid trips to the toilet for dry heaves. This was the only food I had that my wife didn’t have all day and could be the only suspect. My guess is the veggie chili that the burrito was loaded with had spoiled because it wasn’t ordered too often and they make too much of it at once. The county’s health department does not enforce things, so Delta County is not always a safe place to eat.
This is a funky place with pretty good apple cider and veggies for sale. They are involved in the community. My wife liked her pork burger and fries, but she didn’t get sick. But I have been there many times when visiting friends in the area and never cared for the food. It does not seem to be too clean and in some respects reminds me of Boulder’s Carnival Cafe back in the ‘70’s where the staff was so stoned it took two or three times as long to get anything. Prices are high for what they serve. They try to be a community resource, but got to look to themselves when it comes to running a restaurant. The North Fork Valley is not known for good restaurants, so bring food or keep driving.
