Have you ever tasted and/or prepared Durango green chili? The recipe is something to behold, a paella of ingredients. Start with one pound of ground beef and one pound of stew meat. Then add onions, green peppers, minced garlic, tomato paste, diced jalapenos, chili powder,...beef broth, tomatoes with diced green chiles, diced green chiles, kidney beans, sour cream, shredded cheese, tortilla chips, green onions and a 12-ounce bottle of beer. Got it? That's the house specialty at the Durango Diner. Located at 957 Main Avenue, this casual local landmark has been serving breakfast and lunch grub plus home-made green chili and salsa since it opened in 1965. Open from 6 to 2 daily, it's all about Southwestern style. You can't pass up a bowl of green chili, of course. Also sample a home-made cinnamon roll. And how about "The Cure," the Durango Diner's version of Eggs Benedict? It consists of two scrambled eggs, potatoes, cheese, green chili, sausage and wheat toast. Another favorite is corned beef hash and scrambled eggs with hash browns, sausage, English muffin and a cup of green chili. Will somebody please explain why the green chili recipe isn't complete without a 12-ounce bottle of beer, preferably cheap beer? It must add something to the flavor because nobody ever complains.More
